Chapter 62: The Battle of Special Abilities vs. Mutant Zombies (Part 2)

At this moment, no one remembered Xiang Xu’s warning about the consequences of depleting their special abilities. Everyone’s powers were now being unleashed without restraint!

Cheng Ming’s wind blades continuously materialized around him, spinning rapidly under his control and flying toward the tentacles! At the same time, he could feel his special ability being consumed at a terrifying rate.

The lethality of his mutant wind ability was immense. Each wind blade could slice a bloody gash into the tentacles.

Zhang Xiaobai spread his arms, countless bolts of lightning crackling between them, illuminating his youthful face. The lightning bolts hissed and crackled as they shot toward the tentacles! Upon contact, the tentacles emitted a burnt smell, significantly reducing their sensitivity.

However, these tentacles, which could extend up to six or seven meters, were incredibly agile! They dodged left and right, twisting and turning, evading most of the special ability attacks. What was even more terrifying was that, apart from Cheng Ming and Zhang Xiaobai’s unique abilities, attacks like Third Brother Zhong Xu’s earth spikes, Jia Daozhang’s ice shards, and even water arrows could barely harm the tentacles. They were swatted away before they could even get close.

Gu Ning, directing Hong Jie and the others who lacked special abilities to stay far away, watched as their attacks were all knocked down. She grew increasingly anxious and shouted at Jia Daozhang, “Jia Daozhang! Try freezing it!”

Hearing this, Jia Daozhang was momentarily stunned, then his special ability surged wildly within him. His expression turned cold and solemn, his half-burnt robe fluttering in the wind generated by Cheng Ming’s wind blades. He truly looked like a transcendent master at this moment. With a forceful push of his hands toward the monster, a wave of cold air rushed toward the mutant zombie—crack, crack, crack—the ground began to freeze three meters away from the creature, rapidly spreading toward it.

The sound of ice forming echoed continuously. Jia Daozhang was overjoyed, “It’s frozen!” But before he could finish his sentence, a crisp cracking sound froze the smile on his face—the thin ice encasing the mutant zombie shattered into pieces. Jia Daozhang’s smile shattered along with it.

Before he could react, a disgusting sucker slapped onto his chest, splattering some unknown sticky liquid onto his face. Before he could process what was happening, a tremendous suction force pulled him into the air, dragging him toward the mutant zombie!

Jia Daozhang flailed his limbs desperately in mid-air, “Ahhhh! Help me!!!” He tried to pry off the sucker, but its grip was unyielding, no matter how hard he struggled.

Third Brother and the others wanted to help, but the zombie extended more tentacles from who-knows-where, leaving them too occupied to lend a hand.

Gu Ning watched as the mutant zombie’s spherical body suddenly opened a fleshy hole the size of a basin, and the tentacle was rapidly retracting, dragging Jia Daozhang toward it. If Jia Daozhang were pulled into that hole, he would surely meet his end. Although the freezing had slowed the tentacle’s movement, it was only a matter of time before Jia Daozhang was dragged into the gaping maw. Just then, a tentacle swung toward Gu Ning!

Cheng Ming caught a glimpse of this and shouted in alarm, “Gu Ning, watch out!” But Gu Ning stood motionless, as if she hadn’t noticed the tentacle speeding toward her. Cheng Ming was about to send a few wind blades her way when Gu Ning adjusted her stance slightly and coldly shouted, “Don’t worry about me!”

In the moment Cheng Ming was stunned, the sucker latched onto Gu Ning’s abdomen! Although Gu Ning had prepared herself, the sticky, powerful suction and the wriggling sensation of countless worm-like things against her skin through her clothes made her extremely uncomfortable. However, she didn’t have time to dwell on this disgusting feeling. In the next second, her feet left the ground as the tentacle swung her into the air. She felt a wave of dizziness and weightlessness before being yanked back rapidly by the tentacle!

Seeing that even Gu Ning had been caught by the sucker, Jia Daozhang felt a sense of despair.

As Gu Ning got closer to the mutant zombie, she saw that she was now about four or five meters above the ground. She immediately shouted to Third Brother, “Third Brother! Prepare an earth wall!”

Third Brother was momentarily stunned, then shouted to Cheng Ming, “Cheng Ming! Cover me!”

Cheng Ming was startled but quickly began to channel the last remnants of his special ability. The number of wind blades multiplied, drawing the attention of the two tentacles attacking Third Brother.

With some breathing room, Third Brother focused intently on Gu Ning, waiting for her next move.

Seeing that Third Brother was ready, Gu Ning tightened her grip on her knife and, with all her strength, slashed at the tentacle holding her! Even Cheng Ming’s wind blades could only leave a bloody gash on the tentacle, but Gu Ning’s knife severed it completely! The mutant zombie let out a painful howl, and the remaining tentacle retracted rapidly. The sucker on Gu Ning’s abdomen lost its grip and fell to the ground with a splat, and Gu Ning tumbled down from mid-air!

Jia Daozhang seized the opportunity to form an ice spike and stabbed it into the tentacle holding him! He then fell, landing less than three meters from the ground. Although he twisted his ankle upon impact, he wasn’t seriously injured.

Gu Ning, however, fell from a height of five meters. At that moment, Third Brother aimed at her landing spot and, with a forceful push of his hands, an earth wall erupted from the ground! It rose to two meters in an instant. Gu Ning’s feet landed on the wall, and she used one hand to brace herself, absorbing most of the impact. With a push, she leaped forward again! As she jumped, Third Brother’s earth ability surged once more, and another earth wall rose from the ground!

Gu Ning landed precisely on it and leaped again. This time, there was no earth wall, as her landing spot was the body of the mutant zombie!

The entire sequence was as smooth as flowing water, incredibly clean and fluid. Even in such a perilous moment, it was a sight to behold.

The mutant zombie’s cloudy eyes suddenly looked up at Gu Ning, and the tentacles that had been battling Cheng Ming and Zhong Xu abandoned them, swiftly retracting and swinging toward Gu Ning!

The thickest and fastest tentacle was about to strike Gu Ning, but she seemed completely unfazed, making no attempt to dodge. Instead, she swung her long knife with all her might, plunging it into the mutant zombie’s head! The blade sank deep into the creature’s skull.

Unlike ordinary zombies, this mutant zombie could feel pain. Its disproportionately slender throat let out a shrill, agonized scream.

In the next second, Gu Ning was sent flying by the tentacle! She felt a sharp pain in her abdomen, and the world spun around her as she was flung through the air.

“Gu Ning!” Everyone was stunned by her flight and rushed toward her, hoping to catch her before she hit the ground.

But the mutant zombie, now thoroughly enraged, wasn’t about to let Gu Ning go. As she began to fall, the zombie’s tentacle caught her again! With a loud slap, it latched onto her back, ignoring her struggles, and swung her up to a height of seven or eight meters before slamming her down toward the ground!

A fall like this could result in serious injury or even death!

Third Brother, Cheng Ming, Jia Daozhang, and the others were heartbroken, feeling utterly useless despite their special abilities.

At that moment, Xiang Xu, who had been protected by the nervous Xiang Yi, stepped forward resolutely. Her youthful face was filled with determination as she closed her eyes and unleashed her spiritual power for the first time without holding back! It surged toward the zombie like a tidal wave! Wind blades were fast, lightning strikes were fast, and the mutant zombie’s tentacles were even faster, but nothing could match the speed of Xiang Xu’s spiritual power!

The mutant zombie let out another ear-piercing scream! The tentacle holding Gu Ning suddenly lost its suction, but the momentum still sent her crashing toward the ground. As she fell, a force briefly cushioned her descent, though it lasted less than a hundredth of a second. It was enough to absorb most of the impact before she hit the ground with a thud.

Third Brother and the others didn’t know that Xiang Xu had used her spiritual power to protect Gu Ning. Seeing her fall, they were terrified, their legs going weak. Cheng Ming felt as if his heart had stopped. They all rushed toward Gu Ning, but before they could reach her, they saw her move slightly and then struggle to her feet.

Xiang Xu, seeing Gu Ning get up, finally relaxed, and the moment she did, she passed out.

“Gu Ning! Are you okay?!” Cheng Ming was the first to reach her, supporting her shaky body. Jia Daozhang, Third Brother, Zhang Xiaobai, and the others quickly followed, all looking at her with concern, afraid she might have been seriously injured. Just moments ago, they had been paralyzed with fear, their minds blank. Now, seeing Gu Ning standing, they were filled with dread, unable to imagine what they would have done if something had happened to her.

Gu Ning felt pain all over her body, but she shook her head. The first thing she did after getting up was to look at the mutant zombie. Its tentacles had all lost their strength and were lying on the ground, writhing like snakes, a disgusting sight.

The mutant zombie’s body, with its fleshy hole, had now split open, oozing a foul-smelling liquid.

The mutant zombie continued to let out agonized howls—one after another.

For some reason, instead of feeling relieved, Gu Ning had a bad premonition. These howls didn’t just sound like cries of pain—they seemed to be calling for backup.

Gu Ning’s expression changed drastically, and she shouted, “Kill it! It’s calling for help!”

Several special ability attacks were directed at the fleshy mass simultaneously. The mutant zombie, already severely injured, finally stopped moving.

But it was too late.

Rustle—

Rustle—

Rustle—

When this nightmarish sound returned, louder than when the first mutant zombie had appeared, everyone’s faces turned pale.

Gu Ning shouted at Hong Jie and the others who were far away, “Run! Run now!”

The rustling sound was coming from their direction!

What had been the safest area had now become the most dangerous.

Hong Jie and the soldiers used every ounce of strength to sprint toward them.

Gu Ning didn’t have time to check her injuries. Instead, she said to the others, “Quickly replenish your special abilities!” Her expression was more tense than ever. “Zhong Xu! I need you to create a heavy rain to wash over those monsters. Zhang Xiaobai—” Gu Ning glanced at Zhang Xiaobai’s pale face, clearly drained from using his abilities. Cheng Ming wasn’t much better off. Although their abilities were among the strongest in the group, their attacks were also the most taxing. She turned to Jia Daozhang, “Jia Daozhang, get ready to use your ice ability. Once the rain starts, freeze them all. Everyone else, don’t attack. Focus on recovering your abilities! We’ll retreat toward Eleventh Square.”

The way back was blocked by mutant zombies. There was no retreat—they had no choice but to push forward.

Third Brother and the others quickly took out crystal cores and swallowed them, feeling their depleted abilities begin to replenish. Xiang Yi had already given Xiang Xu the crystal core Gu Ning had prepared for her, but Xiang Xu’s abilities were likely too drained. Despite consuming the core, she showed no signs of waking up.

By the time Hong Jie and the soldiers reached them, the rustling sound was closing in. Two more mutant zombies, nearly identical to the first, appeared.

They were still dozens of meters away.

Third Brother and the others felt a suffocating wave of despair. Even at their peak, they had struggled against just one mutant zombie. Now, with their abilities severely depleted and facing two, their morale was at an all-time low.

Gu Ning stood at the front, her expression hidden from view, but her voice remained calm. “Third Brother! Prepare an earth wall to trap them! I’m going to freeze them solid!”

Hearing Gu Ning’s steady voice, everyone felt a surge of determination.

Third Brother, feeling his abilities replenishing, responded firmly, “Got it!” He focused intently on the two mutant zombies rapidly approaching—ready to unleash his ability the moment they entered his range.

Zhong Xu and Jia Daozhang, whom Gu Ning had called upon, felt the pressure mounting. They absorbed every bit of energy from the crystal cores.

Gu Ning continued in a steady voice, “Hong Jie! If we can’t stop them, prepare to shoot!”

Hong Jie and the soldiers didn’t hesitate. Their weapons were already primed, and they raised their guns, aiming at the two mutant zombies in the distance.

Gu Ning didn’t want to resort to gunfire unless absolutely necessary. The risk of attracting more zombies from the city center was too great. But they were nearing that point of no return, and this would be their last line of defense.

As the two mutant zombies closed in to within twenty meters, Gu Ning shouted, “Third Brother!”
