Chapter 147
The bus roared, a sound that would normally be completely ignored but was particularly piercing in the quiet night sky. Gu Ning saw that the zombies near the bus were all startled and slowly started moving towards them.
Gu Ning stepped on the gas, and the car roared forward.
You could clearly feel the bumps as the wheels rolled over the corpses on the road, the sound of heads being crushed by the wheels, the sticky sound of rolling over internal organs… Gu Ning pursed her lips, focusing intently on the road ahead, her hands steady on the steering wheel without a hint of trembling.
Bang bang bang—almost without pause, the dull thuds made everyone in the car nervous. They all knew that each thud represented a zombie.
The bus plowed through the zombies blocking its path like a hot knife through butter. The road was bumpy and hard to navigate, but Gu Ning drove steadily.
Just then, the car suddenly slammed to a halt.
A child couldn’t help but scream, but was quickly comforted by an adult.
Zhuang Chen asked, “What’s wrong?”
Gu Ning quickly turned the steering wheel to reverse and said, “The road ahead is blocked by zombies. We need to take a detour. Hold on!” With that, she reversed sharply and then drove onto the grass beside the road. The soft grass and the slope caused the car to tilt sharply, startling everyone inside. The zombie horde blocking the road was alerted and started chasing after them. Gu Ning turned the steering wheel sharply and sped off the grass, heading towards the road between two buildings ahead!
The wheels screeched on the ground as the bus’s speed kept increasing. The people inside clung tightly to anything they could hold onto. The windows were smeared with blood, and only faint glimpses of the jumping flames outside could be seen.
“Mom, are we going to die?” a child’s voice filled with fear asked in the darkness.
A young woman, equally terrified, patiently comforted, “No, mom will protect you—”
But! Almost as soon as she finished speaking, the window near her shattered with a loud crash! A tentacle, sticky and wet, slapped onto the woman’s back as she instinctively turned to shield her child. The child screamed in terror as the woman, in a moment of despair, let go of the child and was pulled out of the window by the tentacle—
At that critical moment! A vine silently grew from Gu Ning’s feet and shot out of the window!
The woman was pulled out of the window, watching helplessly as the bus continued forward. She struggled to turn her head and, by the light of the nearby flames, saw a massive mutated zombie covered in tentacles, its mouth wide open, waiting for her—she stopped struggling, her limbs going limp, and closed her eyes in despair—
Just then, she felt something cold wrap around her legs—
She opened her eyes and saw a thick green vine coiled around her legs, like a flexible green python, quickly wrapping around her knees! The other end of the vine extended from the broken window of the slowly moving bus ahead.
The vine suddenly tightened! It began pulling the woman back towards the bus.
But the suction cup on her back held firm, and no matter how hard the vine pulled, the tentacle stretched but the suction cup remained firmly attached.
A dagger flew out of the broken window, heading straight for the tentacle—
With a hiss, the dagger accurately struck the middle of the tentacle. White fluid sprayed from the severed tentacle, but it wasn’t completely cut. The vine pulled harder, and the cut widened. Just as the tentacle was about to break, another tentacle slapped onto the woman’s head!
At the same time, the zombie’s dozen or so tentacles began flailing, and the sound of windows shattering filled the air. People screamed in panic in the darkness!
Zhuang Chen shouted, “Don’t stand up! Everyone get down! Crouch under the seats!”
The panicked crowd quickly found their bearings and all ducked under the seats, those in the aisle piling on top of each other on the floor.
The tentacles, having shattered the glass, reached into the car like seaweed, searching for prey.
“Zhuang Chen! You drive!” Gu Ning turned on the headlights and the interior lights, illuminating the dark cabin—Zhuang Chen immediately took the driver’s seat. Gu Ning pulled a knife from her pants, flicked it open, and stepped onto the seat, slashing at the tentacle coming towards her!
With a squelch!
Gu Ning’s knife cut straight through the suction cup, slicing forward—white fluid sprayed out, splattering on the seats. She swung the knife horizontally, cutting off a section of the tentacle! Gu Ning’s eyes gleamed with the sharpness of the blade.
“Ah!” a child’s sharp scream rang out! He had accidentally lifted his head and was grabbed by a tentacle searching for prey. The suction cup clung tightly to his scalp, his eyes pulled into slits by the force. The child’s father clung desperately to his son’s waist, shouting, “Help! Someone help!”
Gu Ning was about to rush over when a tentacle suddenly reached in from the front window and lashed out at her! Gu Ning leaned back, her body forming a U-shape against the seat, and as the tentacle swept over her, she stabbed upwards with her knife! The blade plunged into the tentacle, and she yanked it back, cutting deeply! She then dodged to the right, avoiding the spray of disgusting white fluid. The tentacle, which had been thrashing wildly, went limp and hung over the seat.
Gu Ning looked over and saw Ji Jiuzhe cut another tentacle in half with his knife, then remove the suction cup from the child’s head. He glanced at Gu Ning, nodded slightly to confirm she was safe, and she nodded back. As if by mutual agreement, they both raised their guns, aimed at the mutated zombie’s eyes, and fired without hesitation!
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Ten gunshots echoed through the base, alerting countless zombies. They lifted their rotting faces and began shuffling towards the sound.
The mutated zombie’s head was blown apart, and its tentacles, halfway through another attack, went limp.
The vine pulled the woman back to the window, and she was dragged inside. Pale and shaken, she hugged her trembling child tightly.
“Gu Ning, you…” Zhuang Chen was shocked when she saw the vine by the driver’s seat.
Yi Shaoqing was even more stunned: “Gu Ning, aren’t you a space-type ability user? How do you have…”
“The noise will attract a large horde of zombies,” Ji Jiuzhe interrupted, walking to the front and speaking to Zhuang Chen. “Full speed ahead.”
Zhuang Chen immediately regained her composure and floored the gas, driving the car towards the gate at full speed—
The car started moving again, but the others had lost the courage to sit back down. They crouched on the floor, staying as far from the windows as possible. Gu Ning held onto the railing by the door, sheathed her knife, and said softly, “Besides being a space-type, I’m also a wood-type ability user. For some reason, my abilities have temporarily returned. I’ll explain more once we’re safe.”
Zhuang Chen focused, driving the car at full speed towards the gate, mercilessly running over or knocking aside any zombies in their path.
Before the zombie horde could block the road, Zhuang Chen pushed the bus to its limit, crashing through the base gate and sending a dozen zombies flying!
Once outside, apart from the numerous zombie corpses on the ground, there were few wandering zombies. The bus, like a beast, ruthlessly crushed all zombies in its path, speeding towards the river and then heading north without hesitation.
The bus raced for over twenty minutes before finally shaking off the zombie horde. After driving a bit further, Zhuang Chen gradually slowed down—
The cabin was filled with the nauseating stench of the white fluid, making everyone sick.
Zhuang Chen pulled over.
As soon as the door opened, almost everyone rushed out and vomited by the roadside, the scene utterly disgusting.
After finishing, Yi Shaoqing didn’t get back in the car. Instead, he stood outside and said to Ji Jiuzhe, Gu Ning, and Zhuang Chen, who seemed unaffected, “Aren’t you three coming down to enjoy the fresh air?”
It wasn’t surprising they were vomiting. The stench of the white fluid wasn’t the familiar rot of zombies but more like the putrid smell of dead fish left in the sun for days. It was hard for ordinary people to withstand, and it was impressive they hadn’t vomited in the car.
Ji Jiuzhe, Zhuang Chen, and Gu Ning also got out. The night wind was strong, and the cold breeze felt refreshingly crisp. Gu Ning, whose stomach had been churning from the stench, felt much better, her mind clearer. Zhuang Chen was also frowning, clearly affected by the smell, while Ji Jiuzhe remained calm, seemingly unfazed.
“Gu Ning, why didn’t you go with your Three-Linked Team?” someone who had finished vomiting walked over.
Gu Ning realized it was Director Zhong. He was also on the bus, his forearm heavily bandaged. Whether from his injury or just vomiting, he looked pale. Seeing Gu Ning’s gaze, he explained, “Got bitten by a zombie. I’ve taken the antidote, so it’s fine.”
Gu Ning nodded, relieved, and said, “I got separated from them when the base fell into chaos.”
“No wonder,” Director Zhong said. “I saw your two cars rush out of the base. Don’t worry, your team is quick and strong. They’ll be fine.”
“What about you? Why were you still in the base?” Gu Ning asked, having not had the chance earlier.
“Thanks to Mr. Ji and the others, we’ve rescued several groups from the base. This bus is the last batch,” Director Zhong said, his tone heavy. The base they had protected for so long was now in ruins, and countless lives had been lost that night. His heart was heavy.
Gu Ning asked, “What about the others you rescued? Did they all go separately?”
“They’re all down there!” Zhuang Chen said, leading the way up the steps.
Gu Ning followed them up.
At the top, they saw faint lights about a hundred meters ahead, with tents pitched by the river.
Zhuang Chen turned on her flashlight and led the way down the steps: “The riverbank is open. Even if a zombie horde comes, we’ll have time to escape. These people just survived a close call and need to rest before moving on.”
The steps were steep, about a hundred in total. Once down, they reached the riverbank, an open area with no obstructions. Any approaching zombies would be easily spotted. Gu Ning thought it was a good temporary campsite. They walked another hundred meters to the tents by the river.
Someone was patrolling outside the tents. Seeing Ji Jiuzhe and the others, they relaxed and called out, “They’re back!”
