Chapter 12: Long Time No Hear Such a Funny Joke
After healing all the wounds of that Beastman Tribe girl, Yake gave her some water, which helped her condition improve just a little bit.
“Uh… who are you guys?”
Opening her eyes to see two unfamiliar Outsiders, the girl warily stared at them, needing to confirm their identities first.
“We’re just Adventurers passing through here. We couldn’t just stand by after seeing you being mistreated by these guys, so we decided to step in and rescue you.”
Aierjisi pointed to the three corpses nearby, their recent handiwork.
“Ah! Did you kill them all?!”
Seeing those three now lifeless, the girl was quite shocked; it was her first time witnessing a living person turn into a corpse upon waking up.
“Yep, I couldn’t just let them treat you like that, so I took them all out. What’s the problem with that?”
“Then are you going to kill me next??”
The girl looked at Aierjisi in terror. Her father had always warned her to run far away if she encountered someone with no hesitation in killing, because she’d surely be killed too.
“Huh? Why would I kill you? What good would that do me?”
“Because my dad told me that if I see a guy who kills without blinking, I should run for my life, or I’ll get killed too.”
“Ha.”
After hearing the girl’s explanation, Aierjisi couldn’t help but laugh, but her laughter just deepened the girl’s fear of her.
“Aier, you really shouldn’t be laughing right now. Look at how scared this kid is.”
Yake glanced at the girl’s frightened face, reminding Aierjisi that this wasn’t the time for jokes.
Although he himself almost chuckled out loud.
“Ah, sorry! I haven’t heard such a funny joke in a long time. Your father’s education seems a bit lacking, to tell such things to his kid. Not every killer is that kind of monster. I can’t speak for others, but at least I’m not.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course! What, do you have something else to say?”
“No, no, if you say so, then it is.”
Aierjisi just shot a quick glance at Yake, and he dared not say another word.
“So, are you… good people? Did you come here for something?”
The girl looked at the two of them, feeling they were likely not the bad guys like the three she had just seen, so they must be the good ones, right?
“Ah, almost forgot! We came here looking for a place. Do you know of one?”
“What place? My Tribe isn’t far from here. If you want, why don’t you come with me back to the Tribe? The adults there know more than I do.”
“That sounds good. Yake, let’s head to their Tribe and rest for a bit.”
“Alright. Then I’ll ask you to lead us.”
“It’s no trouble at all! Dad always told me, if someone saves your life, you should repay them with what you can. Just follow me!”
The girl stood up, eager to take them back to her Tribe, but…
“Ah…”
“Are you alright? With your frail condition, moving around is a bit much. How about this?”
Yake lifted the girl gently, placing her on his shoulders.
“Wooah!”
“How’s that? Now you just need to guide us, and I’ll carry you back to the Tribe.”
Indeed, the girl was still quite weak and couldn’t move around well. Letting Yake carry her was the best option.
But…
“Hey, Yake, my legs are a bit unresponsive too. How about you carry me along as well?”
Aierjisi clearly wasn’t pleased. That was Yake’s shoulder, a spot she had never occupied. How could she let a girl she just met an hour ago take that spot? No way! She had to sit on his shoulder too!
“Aier… you shouldn’t be acting up right now.”
“I’m not being difficult! My legs really aren’t listening to me.”
“Why all of a sudden? Weren’t they fine just a moment ago?”
“Maybe it’s because of the unfamiliar surroundings? Either way, my legs are being uncooperative.”
“You could at least find a more reliable excuse; this is supposed to be your hometown! How could you possibly be acclimatized here!”
“Eh? Is that sister over there also from here? But I’ve never seen her before!”
Upon hearing their previous conversation about Aierjisi’s hometown being here, the girl looked a bit surprised. This was the south, the territory of the Beastman Tribe. Typically, only Beastmen lived here. Since this person’s hometown was here, she should be a Beastman too, right? Then why couldn’t she see any Beastman traits on her?
“I used to be from here, but not anymore. Anyway, Yake, my legs aren’t cooperating, and you have to let me sit on your shoulders!”
*Sigh* “Really now? Are you throwing a tantrum at a time like this? It’s impossible.”
Yake sighed. There was no helping it; this was his master’s request. He had to comply, otherwise, he wouldn’t have a good time later.
But honestly, Aierjisi seemed to love throwing childlike tantrums too much. How could she expect him to treat her like a mature adult? No way.
Lifting Aierjisi onto his other shoulder, Yake set off with both girls in tow.
“Hmm, Yake’s shoulders are indeed very comfortable!”
“You’re enjoying it, but my shoulders feel like they’re going to collapse under the weight. Aier, shouldn’t you consider losing some weight? Ah!”
“Idiot Yake! Look at my body! What do you expect I can do about losing weight? Am I supposed to get to the point of being skin and bones?”
“I didn’t say that. Just feels like you’re a bit heavier than her.”
“That’s just your imagination! I’m very light, thank you very much!”
“Ha.”
Seeing the two bicker, the Beastman girl couldn’t help but laugh.
This was the first time she met such interesting humans.
“Hey, over there! What’s your name?”
“Me? I’m Mia! What are your names, big sister and big brother?”
“I’m Yake.”
“And I’m Aierjisi.”
