Chapter 328: A Glimpse of Human Nature
“Next, please proceed to slaughter each other. Only one person can obtain these treasures, and only one person can leave here alive.”
The Woman in Red Dress’s words slowly spread.
When the others heard the voice of the Woman in Red Dress, they all froze for a moment, looking at each other, then glancing at their still-living companions and Dao侣s beside them.
This meant that everyone around them was now an enemy—be it their most trusted companion or their most cherished Dao侣.
“Wh-what did you just say?”
A man trembled as he asked, his eyes wide with fear.
The word “you” in this man’s speech made it seem like he regarded the Woman in Red Dress as some kind of deity.
But that wasn’t unusual. The Woman in Red Dress had already completely displayed her power—no one could defeat her.
In this place, she was akin to a god, controlling life and death.
These people could only feel fear towards her.
“I said~” The Woman in Red Dress floated down onto a rock, crossing her legs, propping her chin with her delicate hand, and smiled as she looked at everyone. “Only one of you will survive. All the rest must die. Is that clear enough for you?”
Everyone: “…”
“One incense stick’s time~” The Woman in Red Dress stuck the incense into the ground, watching as the flame slowly burned downward. “If more than one of you is still alive after the incense burns out, then all of you will die. I’ll just have to wait for the next batch of people.”
After speaking, the Woman in Red Dress remained silent, sitting on the rock and calmly observing everything around her.
To her, it was like a grand performance about to begin.
The remaining fifty or sixty Cultivators distanced themselves from each other. They didn’t trust each other before, and now even more so.
Some Cultivators no longer trusted their own companions, fearing that their comrades might stab them in the back at any moment!
But no one moved yet.
However, as they watched the continuously burning incense, cold sweat broke out on their foreheads. They knew that even if they didn’t act, they would eventually have to, otherwise they were certain to die here.
“Bluh!”
Just when the entire venue was eerily quiet, someone spat out a mouthful of blood.
The man looked down and saw a hand piercing through his chest.
“You… we trained together under the same sect, and you…” The man turned around, staring at his fellow disciple, unable to finish his sentence before collapsing to the ground.
And with this man’s death, the curtain on the massacre was raised.
In an instant, everyone was engaged in chaotic combat. It was every man for himself, though some Dao侣s and sect-mates joined forces temporarily, killing others first.
“Kill them first! Otherwise, who among you has the confidence to kill them by the end?”
A Cultivator pointed at Ming and Shixin and shouted loudly.
Earlier, they had witnessed Ming’s formidable strength.
To them, Ming and Shixin were like bosses.
Only by killing them first would their struggle mean anything, otherwise, they would merely be paving the way for Ming and Shixin’s victory.
In the next moment, all the Cultivators silently charged towards Ming.
“Do you want to see the heart of man?” Ming smiled as he spoke to Shixin.
“What?” Shixin tilted her head.
“Let me rephrase that. Do you want to witness human nature? It’s quite a show.” Ming chuckled coldly.
Holding his longsword, he stepped forward, cutting the first attacker into two pieces, then swiftly eliminating the one who had declared his intent to kill him.
Finally, Ming slashed his sword across the ground, leaving a long mark: “Anyone who crosses this line dies!”
Each word of Ming’s struck deep into the hearts of his opponents.
Everyone stopped in their tracks right outside the thin line.
In the next instant, the Dao Pattern Eyes of Ming activated, causing everyone to freeze momentarily.
Then, as if they hadn’t seen Ming at all, they resumed fighting amongst themselves.
“What did you do?” Shixin asked.
“Nothing much.” Ming closed his sore eyes, wiping away the blood streaming from the corners, and after a while opened them again. “I just cast a little illusion on them, making them believe we’re dead.”
Shixin blinked, surprised that Ming possessed such an ability.
Not only Shixin, but even the Woman in Red Dress observed Ming curiously, finding him intriguing, especially those eyes of his.
His eyes seemed like a treasure trove of magical abilities, capable of producing strange yet highly effective spells.
However, while these spells were powerful, the toll on him appeared to be significant.
In less than half the time of the burning incense, only two people remained in the “illusion.”
These two were battered and bruised, covered in blood.
They were skilled and lucky; otherwise, they wouldn’t have made it this far.
But now, with everyone else dead, only one of them could claim the heavenly treasures and leave alive. What were they to do?
The couple exchanged a glance, their expressions complicated as they looked at each other.
There was caution in their gazes.
“Yun’er, I…” The man swallowed hard, looking at the woman he loved.
“Qiushi…” Yun’er smiled faintly. “Kill me. After I’m gone, live well.”
The man shook his head fiercely. “No! I can’t do that! Yun’er! You kill me! I want you to live!”
Her eyes flickered. “With that sentence, I am already very happy. But Qiushi, don’t be foolish. Between us, only one can leave alive.”
“I know!” The man clenched his fists tightly. “But even if only one of us can survive, I hope it’s you!”
“Qiushi…”
“Yun’er! I won’t kill you! If you die, I won’t linger either!”
“Qiushi, I feel the same way. If you die, I won’t live either…”
“Then let us be Dao侣s again in the next life!”
“Yes! Let us be Dao侣s again in the next life!”
With that, the couple charged toward the Woman in Red Dress, as if they no longer wished to live, determined only to fight her to the death.
Either both would live or both would die.
However, when they were within twenty meters of the Woman in Red Dress, a shadow of malice flashed in both their eyes simultaneously. They drew their swords and slashed at each other.
