Chapter 196: Sacred Altar Hero (2nd Update)
Lin Nuo watched as the group huddled to discuss something, a sense of impending doom creeping over him.
“Something’s definitely brewing with these folks.”
What, are they planning to write a paper listing out his crimes? Or holding a vote on what kind of torture to give him?
Clearly, it was nothing good.
“Oh, how I wish I could just go back and lie down with some Meat Floss Cake and drink some cold water.”
Lin Nuo sized up the two chosen ones who had just regained consciousness.
These two showed no signs of being injured; rather, they looked like they had just awakened from a long nap, filled with vitality.
After their explosive showdown, they didn’t seem to have any aftereffects. On the contrary, they even seemed to level up! It was the biggest cheat in this spirit cultivation world, yet only he was aware of its existence.
Of course, knowing it didn’t let him report them, which was the most frustrating part.
“Master Wu, during the emergency… are you alright?”
Su Kexin looked at Lin Nuo with concern.
“Alright? How could I be? You went off like a rocket and are still standing, things are pretty serious, more explosive than the Sacred Altar!”
“No,” Lin Nuo answered flatly.
“Master Wu, do you know what happened? I remember almost being killed by a sorcerer,” Su Kexin pressed on.
“I don’t know, maybe they came just in time to save us.”
“Of course, it was my master who saved me!”
Ling Meng attempted to nuzzle up to Lin Nuo, but he quickly stood up, leaving her in the lurch.
Ling Meng pouted in displeasure. This stinky master of hers didn’t even check on her after she got hurt. At least a deep hug would’ve been nice!
“I didn’t save you. You all saw it, I was overwhelmed by that sorcerer too,” Lin Nuo replied sincerely.
“If I could save you, you wouldn’t be injured or unconscious. The sorcerer’s dead, it must have been them who came to your rescue. So if there’s gratitude, you should thank them.”
Even though he said that, Su Kexin and Ling Meng didn’t quite believe him.
Since those sorcerers had denied it, claiming that Lin Nuo alone was standing safe by the Three Heaven Stone, the likelihood of who was lying was pretty obvious.
Su Kexin suddenly felt that Wu Ying Ge’s way of handling things was eerily similar to someone else’s. He clearly had made great contributions but was subtly pushing the credit away and staying aloof.
That someone was her senior brother Lin Nuo. Speaking of which, it had been a while since she had seen him.
This Wu Ying Ge had a lot of similarities to her senior brother, but she couldn’t just assume anything. And last time he had denied being Lin Nuo.
Of course, there was no evidence to prove his contributions right now; it was all speculative.
After a long while, the discussion among the sorcerers came to an end, and they returned to the scene.
One sorcerer addressed Lin Nuo and the others:
“On behalf of the Sacred Altar and all the citizens of Zhou Ling City, I sincerely thank you all. Without your contributions, the Sacred Altar and Zhou Ling City would likely face great calamity. Regarding the Sacred Altar, based on the discussions and clues on-site, we believe that Cang Zhao most likely intended to destroy the Three Heaven Stone. We were careless, falling for a distraction tactic. Thankfully, with the help of these two ladies and this knight, the Three Heaven Stone was preserved.”
“Elder, I didn’t do anything; in fact, I was just a burden,” Su Kexin quickly declined. She was well aware of her own capabilities and had hardly contributed. She felt more like a nuisance than anything heroic.
If anyone deserved credit, it was her senior sisters, while she was just an apprentice out for learning.
Lin Nuo shot her a glance.
“Good grief, why do I feel like you’re taking shots at me? If you’re gonna give credit, just use my full name, Lin Wu Ying Ge! I had nothing to do with guarding the Sacred Altar!”
But you guys? You all cleaned up the opponents.
The sorcerer chuckled, “No, the lady also contributed to the Sacred Altar; we certainly remember that. I recall you all joined the Righteous Path Organization. We can put in a good word for you with the city lord, and you won’t be shortchanged, reputation or rewards. Of course, we also follow the principle of rewarding contributions, and here, we must particularly thank one person.”
With that, the sorcerer took Lin Nuo’s hands into his own:
“And that person is this knight here.”
Lin Nuo: “??”
What’s going on? Why are they thanking me? What did I even do?
The smile on the sorcerer’s face disappeared, turning serious: “I’m afraid our sorcerer Cang Zhao may be in collusion with external wizards. He still possesses some soul fragments that are not quite the same as ordinary ones, which could be the cause of the explosion.
We pieced our thoughts together and concluded their plan: they would first cast spells on the fierce beasts, then launch a mass attack. Everyone successfully defended, gathering soul fragments, which would trigger an explosion causing severe injuries, forcing our sorcerers out of the Sacred Altar. Cang Zhao proactively requested to stay behind, as did Zhou Zhuo. Then Cang Zhao pulled Zhou Zhuo out, leaving him alone to try and sabotage the Three Heaven Stone.”
The sorcerer paused before continuing:
“However, he likely didn’t expect to run into the three of you. Our companions returned from all directions, and there were no signs of anyone leaving. That meant only you and Cang Zhao were present. With the two ladies injured and unconscious, and Cang Zhao dead, it must have been this knight who defeated Cang Zhao.”
Lin Nuo: “??”
What the hell? You guys took that long in your meeting just to come to this ridiculous conclusion? You really think the big bad guy saved the day?
If you sent them to solve a case, it’d be a miracle if June Frost didn’t bury you and your dog!
Evidently, it seemed like Lin Nuo was the only one who could have taken down Cang Zhao.
But that was a finishing move, totally different from a righteous defeat!
Su Kexin and Ling Meng seemed clueless, taking him down just to pass out; it was really thrilling, tossing the blame right onto him. Good grief, this framing is beyond ridiculous.
Lin Nuo hurriedly responded, “No, it wasn’t me who took him down.”
“Ah, knight, there’s no need to hide it anymore. And we won’t ask you to explain how you did it, after all, it’s likely some covert technique of yours. Every expert possesses their own secrets, and you wouldn’t tell us. But it’s clear; only you could’ve defeated Cang Zhao, and there’s really no better explanation.”
“It’s not—”
“No need to say more, both Miss Qin and Miss Liu agree; you must’ve anticipated this and voluntarily requested to enter the Sacred Altar to heal your disciple, thus preventing Cang Zhao’s evil deeds. We were rather slow to catch on, and we truly feel ashamed.”
The serious demeanor of the sorcerer faded as he began to smile.
“Lastly, on behalf of the Sacred Altar and the people of Zhou Ling City, I sincerely thank the knight!”
Lin Nuo: “???”
What the heck? I was here to destroy the Three Heaven Stone, how did it turn into me saving the Sacred Altar?!
This is slander!
