Chapter 402: The Supporter of the Magic Array
Lin Nuo made a discovery—he saw the eldest son of his neighbor who had gone missing for several years!
Lin Nuo didn’t have many interactions with him. Back when the old man was still in Ru Yu Village, Lin Nuo used to see him when he returned to pay respects.
Every time Xia Hanmo took him back to Ru Yu Village, they would visit the neighbor’s house and share a meal together.
Lin Nuo remembered him as a kind elder brother at the dinner table. He had a strong physique, was responsible, and a genuine, family-oriented man.
It was said that he went out to work in his youth, earned some money, returned to the village, took over a large piece of farmland, bought fishing gear, and even had his own boat. He often went out fishing alone, regularly coming back with a full haul and selling it in the city, leading a flavorful life with his family.
But then he encountered a disaster while at sea, and he was lost.
Yet here he was, appearing before him now.
Lin Nuo usually forgot about standard good guys like this, but he still had some impression of Yu Long next door.
Perhaps it was because he was met during a time when Lin Nuo still had a bit of a conscience, and back then he naively saw him as a role model.
Cautious Lin Nuo didn’t step into the array, keeping his distance while observing Yu Long ahead.
Yu Long had beads of sweat on his forehead, his face slightly pale, as if he’d undergone some hardship.
Yet he still tried hard to maintain a smile, concealing his pain.
Lin Nuo stood silently, and soon Yu Long noticed him.
“Is that you, Lin Nuo?” came Yu Long’s voice from not far away.
Lin Nuo nodded and replied, “Hello.”
“Mm, hello.”
Yu Long greeted Lin Nuo friendly, recalling him as a talkative and cheerful young man. However, the person before him now seemed a bit aloof, with a decidedly cold tone.
“It’s been a while, Lin Nuo. Remember when you and Aunt Xia used to come back to Ru Yu Village…”
“Alright, now isn’t a time for reminiscing,” Lin Nuo interjected. Those memories could be saved for when they go to pay respects.
“What’s going on with you now? Your family is still waiting for you to come home for dinner.”
“Me? Sigh, I can’t go back.”
Yu Long sighed deeply and continued, “Once I went out to sea and met Master Fu, then ran into some mentors stationed here. Learning that all the good weather and harmony we’ve had was thanks to this great magic array, I resolutely chose to stay. But now I can’t leave; if I do, a tsunami will come, and Ru Yu Village will be submerged.”
“How so?”
Lin Nuo was puzzled, sensing the gravity of the situation: “Is it related to the sudden fluctuations in the spiritual energy field of the sea?”
At this moment, a mage from the Sea Domain Dragon Clan, Fu, stepped forward to answer Lin Nuo’s question.
“This magic array is to protect this sea domain. During the grand ceremony of the Sea Domain Dragon Clan, with all the clansmen gathered, it naturally causes fluctuations in the spiritual energy field, which could trigger a tsunami. Ru Yu Village should have been swallowed by it ages ago, but my magic array has been holding it back, allowing Ru Yu Village to thrive in peace. However…”
Fu’s tone shifted, becoming more serious, “I just mentioned that the magic array needs his support. Once he chooses this path, he becomes the wall against the tsunami. If he leaves, the tsunami will sweep in, and the village and all the beings on land will suffer.”
“Alright, I think I understand now.”
Lin Nuo nodded, getting the gist that the Sea Domain Dragon Clan’s mage sets up the array, needing someone with special resistance like Yu Long to support it against the tsunami.
The tranquility they enjoyed was deceptive; the magic array was holding back the outer tsunami, and if the array disappeared, the tsunami would surge in.
This was what they referred to as disaster.
Fu paused before continuing, “Actually, I set it up quite discreetly, and the Sea Domain Dragon Clan around here hasn’t paid much attention to the existence of my magic array. But now, that’s different; they seem to have sensed it.”
“If they discover it, then what? Will they try to destroy it?”
“Yes, but I anticipated their actions and already set up a few misleading magic arrays. They are currently focused on breaking those,” Fu replied.
“Fortunately, their movements haven’t been vigorous; it will still take them some time to undo those misleading magic arrays. But this is merely a delaying tactic—they will inevitably come for it, and we can’t stop them. For now, we can only let the villagers leave before the array disappears.”
“Ru Yu Village has the protection of the Sea God,” Lin Nuo deliberately brought this up.
“There’s no such thing as a Sea God; it’s just a legend. The magic array has lasted many years, and Yu Long is merely one of the supporting humans. Several others have supported before him, but they’re all dead now,” Fu explained.
“So that’s just a bunch of hocus pocus.”
As Lin Nuo had expected, it seemed like some scam artist tricking people, saying dreamlike tales of meeting the Sea God—like a clever ruse to get tribute and coins from them.
