Chapter 31: Catch That Glimmer
Today was the day Roy took the magic potion and officially became an Extraordinary Being.
Karl looked gloomy, his cutlery having turned the food on his plate into a complete disaster, yet not a single bite had crossed his lips.
“My lord, please trust young master. You’ve seen his efforts these past few days, haven’t you?”
To Anya, a father’s worry for his son was completely normal. But Karl seemed to be overly anxious at this moment.
Is he just being too indulgent?
“In the worst-case scenario, there’s a medical team ready. The young master will be fine.”
“I know.” Karl put down his knife and fork, revealing a hint of a tired smile.
He stared quietly at the void beside him, lost in thought as if he was transported back in time.
If he could, he would prefer Roy never becoming an Extraordinary Being.
Extraordinary Beings carry responsibilities far beyond that of ordinary people.
And what Roy had to bear was much more than he imagined.
Just then, a terrifying wave of pressure swept in.
Every Extraordinary Being in the Marquis’ residence froze, and Anya’s expression changed in an instant.
That was definitely not the terrifying aura of a low-level Extraordinary Being of silver bloodline; it felt more like some horrific foreign presence!
The source of this inexplicable pressure was moving towards Roy’s room.
“My lord, it’s an emergency!”
But just as Anya was about to call the maid to check on the situation, Karl spoke in a low voice.
“Nobody is to disturb him.”
“My lord?!”
Anya noticed how heavily he emphasized “disturb.”
“Roy can only rely on himself.”
Karl closed his eyes, his words carrying a resolute tone.
It was as much a command to himself as it was to her.
For a moment, Anya was flooded with countless questions, but when she saw his tightly clenched fists, she realized that the one who was most worried about Roy was actually Karl.
Anya finally understood what Karl was concerned about.
But the truth behind it, she, merely a maid, had no right to interfere.
I hope the young master will be safe.
————————————
Alice never expected such a bizarre turn of events in just a few seconds.
The purple incense in the room thinned instantly, and the green liquid in the bathtub visibly evaporated. Most importantly, Roy’s entire body erupted with an ominous energy, with blood seeping from the corners of his eyes, mouth, and even his skin.
Even if Alice knew nothing of the Extraordinary, she sensed that something was terribly wrong!
“Master, please hang in there, I’ll call for help right away…”
Instinctively, Alice wanted to rush out to bring someone to interrupt Roy’s ascension, but just as she turned, she heard Roy let out a beast-like, howling scream that made her heart skip a beat.
The girl’s feet would not move.
She couldn’t just leave her master like this.
“Something’s wrong! Quickly, get someone to save the master!”
Alice shouted her lungs out as she dashed to the door, then rushed back to tightly grasp Roy’s bloodied hand.
There had always been maids waiting outside to prevent any accidents during the ascension, so after her call just now, someone would surely come to save Roy soon.
All she could do now was stay by her master’s side.
“Master, please hang in there! Sister Anna will be here to save you soon…!”
The pain in her wrist made Alice’s expression contort for a moment.
It was like a poor creature sinking into the depths of the ocean, clinging onto its last bit of hope as Roy’s grip felt like an iron claw, brutally clutching her delicate wrist.
Alice felt strangely happy.
The fact that he could hold on tightly meant Roy hadn’t given up on life.
“Master, hang in there! It’s almost over, almost!” Alice forced herself to endure the pain, speaking words of comfort softer than usual.
Compared to the abuse she suffered from the bar owner, this was nothing at all.
Compared to what her master was enduring now, this was trivial.
If it could help Roy, losing her hand was a small price to pay.
Yet, there was an unwillingness.
Having grown accustomed to being weak, it was the first time Alice felt such hatred towards herself for lacking strength, unable to even share a fraction of Roy’s pain.
With her free hand, Alice gently placed it on the back of Roy’s hand, bowed her head, and silently prayed.
Master, I beg you…
You must be alright.
The girl, who had never believed in gods, didn’t know who to pray to.
Only her fervent desire for Roy’s safety shone brightly.
Alice had no idea that at that moment, tiny stars of silver light began to emerge from within her.
The chaotic lights danced in the air, transforming into a pure silver halo, like a pair of white wings, enveloping Roy.
Entangled in the pitch-black abyss, reaching out was utterly futile.
Roy felt an overwhelming fatigue; his will to fight and survive gradually frozen by the darkness.
Maybe dying wouldn’t be so bad?
After all, he was just a transmigrator. A useless young master.
Even if he died, no one would shed tears for him, right?
However, on the brink of losing consciousness, amidst the endless dark, Roy caught a glimpse of a flickering light.
The glow grew brighter, bringing warmth and hope.
Ancient whispers or terrifying pressures, even the soul-ripping agony, all faded under that glimmer. The only sensation Roy could feel was a slight touch in the palm of his hand.
He was not alone.
It was still far too early to give up.
With hope reignited, Roy summoned all his strength and reached out, gripping that sacred light tightly.
“Hah—!”
Roy suddenly shot up, gasping, feeling a fiery pain in his lungs, and his vision blurred.
He almost suffocated just now!
After gasping for a while, he finally regained his senses and blankly scanned his surroundings.
The purple incense had long since burned out, and the potion in the bathtub was completely dried up. No more light seeped in from the curtains.
Was it already night?!
A single silver-grade 【Blood Iron】 magic potion took him an entire day to digest?!
Rose from the dead, Roy’s mood was indescribably complex.
Was his physique just that weak, or was the potion flawed?
But the panel showed that the 【Compatibility】 and 【Capacity】 weren’t that bad, and there was no indication that the 【Blood Iron】 potion had any issues!
Could it be that the panel itself is a scam???
The sheer effort of handling such simple thoughts made Roy’s head throb.
He instinctively reached to rub his forehead only to realize there was something beside him.
Turning around, he saw Alice gripping his hand tightly, a limp heap on the floor.
“Alice?!”
Roy jumped in shock, hurriedly supporting the girl and checking her condition.
The good news was that Alice had merely fainted and was breathing normally, so she was fine.
But Roy noticed that on Alice’s originally pale and delicate wrist, there was now a painful-looking bruise.
A glance, and it was clearly from his grip.
Roy could roughly guess what happened.
When the trouble arose, Alice must have come to check on him, trying to comfort him, only to be caught in his grip.
You fool, couldn’t you have just pushed me away when it got so bad?
Roy sighed, ignoring the ripping pain throughout his body, and staggered to his feet, picking Alice up.
The girl’s body was even lighter than he had imagined.
Such a frail little thing, yet she had stayed by his side all day and collapsed without letting go.
Filled with pity, Roy gently laid Alice on the bed, confirming she was indeed okay before he checked on his own condition.
