Chapter 101: Pursuit and Counterattack
“Waste, a bunch of useless…!”
Leo cursed furiously, but fell silent upon seeing the grim state of his knights.
The earlier explosion had claimed two-thirds of the knights on the spot, and the survivors were battered, their faces etched with fear, morale plummeting to rock bottom.
A commander could only scold soldiers when they made mistakes, but they had already done their best.
Even though Leo had traveled across the kingdom and seen much, he’d never encountered anything like that!
He never imagined that his soldiers could possibly withstand it.
That wasn’t even a precious extraordinary item, but rather some kind of consumable!
His earlier scolding would likely leave a deep scar in their hearts, a thorn that could never be pulled out.
Taking a deep breath, Leo turned his fury toward Bruven: “I told you to stop the guards, not to cause chaos!”
“Ah, Your Highness, please calm down; we were just trying to help,” the old man smiled softly, though there wasn’t a trace of mirth in his eyes.
Bruven’s words made Leo all the more cautious.
Instinctively, Leo didn’t want these dangerous guys to have their way, but if Roy really managed to escape and caused a ruckus for Rob, he wouldn’t need to worry about the throne, rather about surviving the wrath of the Lionheart King!
However, if these cultists took action, Charlotte’s safety would be…
“Your Highness is a clever man; you should know how to choose,” Bruven seemed to see through Leo’s thoughts, sighing as he coaxed, “The emperor is heartless; a general’s success often means the bones of many. I advise you to let go of the burdensome ties of kinship early.”
Under the cold gaze of the old man, Leo felt for the first time that those eyes were as chilling as those of a cold-blooded creature, leaving him momentarily speechless.
After a long pause, he slowly replied: “Charlotte has value for my future rule; try not to kill her.”
“If you want Roy, then put him to use!”
Leo left those icy words, then ordered his knights to immobilize the “Cake” and mounted his steed “Wind Chaser,” soaring into the sky.
Only then did Bruven drop his facade of flattery, casting a disdainful glance at Leo’s retreating figure.
“Can’t even catch a little lord and still cling to kinship—no wonder our king hasn’t rewarded him with a baptism.”
Bruven turned to the cultists behind him, saying warmly, “Looks like we’ll have to trouble you to clean up after our foolish prince.”
The cultist nodded respectfully, then his body trembled under his robe, roaring like a mighty volcano!
——————————————
“We actually escaped!”
Even Charlotte, bold as she was, felt her heart race at the recent events, patting her chest.
After all, Leo was Sequence 6!
Sequences 789 are low-tier, while 56 are mid-tier. If the gap between layers could still be bridged by extraordinary items and individual strength, then mid to low sequences represented an entirely different concept!
Sequence 6 was known as “one against a thousand,” capable of tipping the balance of a battle solely through personal prowess. Escaping from one of them was enough for anyone from a lower sequence to boast!
Roy smiled slightly but didn’t lower his guard, warning: “It’s not over yet.”
“Leo won’t give up that easily, and the Cult of the Evil Dragon might have aerial pursuit methods.”
Upon hearing this, Charlotte tightened her grip again, her earlier relaxation vanishing.
It was Roy who had made their escape possible earlier.
The mysterious items, his quick reflexes, and calm judgment—without any of those, they wouldn’t have made it out.
She had originally intended to step out to protect Roy, but instead, she found herself being protected!
Charlotte leaned against Roy’s chest, feeling a mix of reluctance and, recalling the domineering decisiveness Roy had shown during the crisis, her heart inexplicably raced.
Just then, Roy suddenly pulled the reins, bringing the Golden-Winged Griffin to a sharp stop as a flaming arrow flew past them, exploding ahead!
Looking back, they saw Leo riding the crimson-golden Griffin, drawing a fire arrow, resembling a fiery specter racing toward them!
“Don’t think you can escape!”
Leo unleashed several arrows, raining down like falling scarlet meteors.
The Golden-Winged Griffin let out a sharp cry, dashing through the meteor shower, lightning fast.
Every arrow that avoided them exploded fiercely on the ground, instantly turning the dense forest into a raging inferno.
A Sequence 6 attack was no joke; if either of them were hit, they would be finished on the spot.
“Roy! Can’t you use that powder again?!” Charlotte called out while countering.
If we’re talking about accuracy, Charlotte was slightly better, but she was only Sequence 8.
With their shared bloodline, the one of lower sequence had no chance against the superior!
The fierce arrow aimed directly at Leo was caught barehanded, extinguished like a mere matchstick.
Roy firmly replied: “No way, we’re flying too steeply!”
The air atop was far less stable than on land, and with both Roy and Leo on speeding mounts, Roy couldn’t accurately drop the concoctions onto Leo’s attacking path.
The Golden-Winged Griffin was fast, but “Wind Chaser” bore the royal griffin bloodline, so its speed was barely different. Moreover, Leo was an experienced griffin rider, far exceeding Roy in flying skills.
In truth, Roy couldn’t ride the griffin at all—he relied on griffin language to communicate, letting the Golden-Winged Griffin act on its own.
That alone made Leo feel incredulous. After all, he had tirelessly practiced for a week just to barely ride a griffin in circles.
But facing a barrage with no chance to counter, even the Golden-Winged Griffin had its limits.
It wasn’t long before several arrows whizzed past the griffin, causing it to screech in pain as the smell of burnt feathers filled the air.
“Brother! Come up with something quick; if this goes on, I’m gonna become charcoal! (Griffin Language)”
Charlotte looked at Roy nervously too.
A Sequence 6 expert, who was also an experienced griffin flyer—they were at a severe disadvantage.
Yet leaning against Roy, the girl felt more than just anxiety; there was an incredible sense of comfort.
“Roy, what should we do next?”
Roy pondered for a moment before commanding: “I’ll create an opportunity for you; just ensure your shot hits!”
“I can do that, but my attacks won’t hurt him!” Charlotte wanted to help but felt anxious.
But Roy shook his head: “Not to attack him, but to attack his mount.”
“But the royal griffin is fire-resistant, isn’t it?”
Griffins generally had Sequence 7 strength; the royal griffin’s special bloodline made it inherently fireproof, and Charlotte wasn’t sure if a single blow would be enough to topple “Wind Chaser”.
“The innermost side of a griffin’s wings is packed with nerve endings—it’s their biggest weakness!”
Roy couldn’t ride a griffin, but he could guarantee that no one understood griffin physiology better than him!
Roy turned to his good buddy beneath him, speaking in griffin language: “Buddy, fly right under it!”
“No way! I can run and fly but I can’t fight!” the Golden-Winged Griffin was shocked by Roy’s crazy idea and was extremely timid.
Didn’t expect this flashy golden creature to be such a scaredy-cat.
“If you don’t fly, we’ll all die! Plus…” Roy paused, whispering in its ear, “Don’t you remember? It was that guy who hurt your ‘Cake’ sister earlier!”
“Your future girlfriend is being bullied like this, and you’re gonna let it go?”
With those words, the Golden-Winged Griffin’s chest sparked with fury.
“Are you sure I can take it down?”
“As long as you’re willing to fly over.”
“Damn it! Let’s do it!”
The Golden-Winged Griffin spread its wings, made a sudden stop, and dove down swiftly toward “Wind Chaser”!
