Chapter 37: Bad News
“Everyone, let’s disperse before Natasha returns. Take some time to rest,” Roy called out to his teammates.
Perhaps out of respect for his status, everyone along the way, whether Rangers or Natasha’s Adventurers, seemed overly tense. If he didn’t speak up, no one dared to take initiative.
It’s worth noting that all the guards assigned to Nia were female for easier care.
The Elven descendants were all graceful beauties with dewy skin, forming a squad of stunning Elf maidens—it was quite the sight to behold.
One little girl eagerly asked, “Aren’t you going to rest, Lord Roy?”
“Outside, just call me Roderick. And there’s no need for ‘Lord’. You all go rest; I’ll wait for Natasha.”
“Oh, I see.” The little girl seemed a bit disappointed, but she quickly perked up. “Then I’ll bring you some drinks later, Roderick!”
Roy smiled and waved at the girls.
Unexpectedly, a snarky whisper reached his ears.
“Tsk tsk, no need to call you ‘Lord’? Didn’t see you were so gentle.”
Nia rested her chin on Roy’s shoulder, her expression filled with resentment. “Let’s not talk about others; Sister Nana has even had a boyfriend before, so don’t get any weird ideas.”
“A boyfriend?” Roy was a bit puzzled.
Elven descendants typically took relationships lightly, tending to marry late and have children later. He thought Natasha, being a seasoned adventurer who shied away from worldly affairs, wouldn’t be interested in love at all.
“Yeah, it’s said he was her partner during her adventuring days. Though Sister Nana doesn’t say it, back in the day they were…” Nia paused, becoming wary. “You’re not actually interested in Sister Nana, are you?”
“What do you think?” Roy teased, casually supporting the girl’s cheek.
In the bustling camp, people came and went.
The sudden intimacy startled Nia, leaving her flustered and at a loss.
Unbeknownst to her, Roy had already activated [Still Water]. No matter how lively the surroundings were, he could easily create a secluded world for just the two of them.
“Wait…”
“No waiting.”
Without giving the girl a chance to delay, Roy leaned in and placed a kiss on her fair forehead, gently caressing her blushing face. “My little Elven girlfriend, you’re the only one I need.”
Nia was momentarily baffled and dazed, feeling like a deer caught in headlights, with her eyes glazed over.
No girl would dislike being told she was the only one, right?
As soon as Roy let go, she snapped back to reality, her expression darkening as she pinched Roy’s side tightly.
“So if I’m your only little Elven girlfriend, does that mean you can still have a princess girlfriend or a saint girlfriend?!”
“To be fair, a fiancée and a personal maid are a bit different!”
“Differences? In the end, they all end up in your bed, right?”
Nia half-joked while accusing Roy of being a playboy. However, her playful punches had somehow turned into her clinging to his arm like a love-struck little bird.
No matter how things progressed between him and the others, at least for this journey ahead, Roy belonged only to her. With that thought in mind, Nia felt the bitterness in her chest lighten a bit.
To keep a low profile, the group disguised themselves, and Nia also used an extraordinary item to conceal her identity.
Yet her clear voice, well-proportioned figure, cheerful demeanor, and sweet affectionate gestures still attracted the attention of many passing adventurers like a refreshing breeze through the forest.
Experienced and capable adventurers were often objects of envy for their peers. Even they couldn’t help but glare in the direction of the young couple, green with envy.
After years of blood and grit, if warm havens for their wives were what everyone craved, then a sweet girl willing to share hardships was an indulgence they couldn’t even imagine wanting.
Let alone that the girl was an Elf.
Although no one considered Roderick a big shot, at this moment, he had already won more than many.
But not everyone looked on with envy.
“Hah, naive.”
“Bringing a girlfriend to such a dangerous place? He’s probably just a bored noble looking for thrills.”
A man dressed in black chuckled darkly, disdainfully turning his head, leading his men past in another direction.
Soon, Natasha returned.
She glanced at the pair who had somehow gotten entangled, the corners of her mouth twitching, but wisely kept her questions to herself as she reported the current situation.
“Bad news, the checkpoints ahead are even stricter than I expected. There are reports of extremely ferocious magic beasts, and an A-Rank adventurer has gone missing. Until we confirm the situation, the guild has prohibited anyone from passing through here.”
“And the receptionist is a young one who doesn’t recognize my ID badge,” Natasha added, looking a bit frustrated.
“Come on, Natasha, you can’t be serious,” Nia teased at first, then casually said, “If you don’t have your ID, just say we’re from the Council.”
The Verdant Council is the Adventurers’ Guild’s largest collaborating entity, and this large-scale investigation into the Everdark Forest was commissioned directly by Janthea. In principle, they were now employers of the Adventurers’ Guild, so at least the lower-level adventurers wouldn’t dare slight them; making exceptions wouldn’t be impossible either.
But Natasha shook her head. “The receptionist said she needs to consult with a higher-up to make a decision.”
Roy had a bad feeling: “So where is the highest-ranking person?”
Natasha sighed and shrugged. “The vice president has taken the main force to the Everdark Forest, and we have to wait for him to send back a response.”
“There are too many magic beasts around. The messenger pigeons can’t make it, so we have to wait for a capable team to pass through here to deliver the news.”
To get through here, they needed the vice president to verify their identities. To verify identities, they needed to send messages through here to the vice president.
The awkward situation left both Roy and Nia speechless, and it was no wonder Natasha seemed so troubled.
“How about I show my identification? My badge is the latest version; an A-Rank adventurer should be able to bend the rules a bit, right?”
Adventurer ranks were a bit more ambiguous than bloodline ranks. For example, both being A-Rank encompassed Sequence 7 to Sequence 5, which had a significant difference.
And S-Rank adventurers were all extremely rare high-level Extraordinary Beings.
So even if an A-Rank fell, those who took on their tasks were often just more A-Ranks.
“No way, it’s been said that the magic beasts are extremely vicious, and the A-Rank adventurer who fell was Sequence 5…”
At that moment, an impatient shout came from afar.
“Look closely, we have two A-Ranks on our side, we can easily clear the swamp!”
Following the voice, Roy saw a tall, black-clad uncle with shadowed eyes impatiently calling out.
Next to him stood Hex, a muscular man with bronzed skin, an A-Rank adventurer Roy had previously encountered at the Academy City’s underground auction.
The receptionist seems quite troubled, and an argument broke out between her and the two adventurers.
