Chapter 41: The Heartfelt Message
Adventurers aren’t necessarily good at adventuring, but they sure are great at exaggerating.
Roy had a deep understanding of this saying today.
At first, listening to Hex enthusiastically recount his past, and seeing the guards show their admiration, Roy felt a bit smug inside.
Who wouldn’t want to earn themselves a bunch of little fans?
But as he listened, things started to feel off.
What was this talk about battling seven most-wanted criminals, bravely storming into monster dens, thwarting cult conspiracies, and even taking on the demon race on the borders? It all felt a bit too much like a walking romance novel, tangled up with renowned beauties along the way… just like every legendary adventurer described in bard songs—mysterious, powerful, charming, and romantic.
What in the world was going on here?!
I almost believed it!
Well, now that I think of it, there are some areas where I can relate. But the Sword Demon has only acted a handful of times; I’m perfectly innocent here!
My emotional life is a little complicated, but the Sword Demon is innocent! Don’t you go spreading rumors, okay?!
This might tarnish the Sword Demon’s glorious image in Nia’s eyes!
Roy munched on some roasted meat while eyeing Nia’s expression.
To be fair, Hex and the others really are good storytellers.
The innocent little Elven girls were completely enamored, each fantasizing about what it would be like to hang out with the legendary Sword Demon.
But unlike them, Nia was smiling, yet her eyes held no joy.
“Well, it sounds like this Sword Demon is indeed impressive, but he seems quite the womanizer.”
Completely oblivious to Nia’s displeasure, Hex burst out laughing: “Hahaha, little sister, you just don’t get it! All adventurers are like that; the stronger they are, the more girls throw themselves at them! I bet Sword Demon bro can’t fend them off!”
Don’t you dare insult my image like that!
Even if Nia doesn’t know I am the Sword Demon, I still don’t want to be thought of as a scumbag!
Roy quickly defended himself, “Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to say that?”
“Hex, you didn’t even see what the Sword Demon is like! How can you judge his character?”
Nia suddenly turned around, curious, “Oh? So you think the Sword Demon isn’t a womanizer and is actually a pure-hearted warrior?”
“… Maybe.”
Under the girl’s semi-smiling yet teasing gaze, Roy felt inexplicably guilty for some reason.
And the young boy who seemed calm was actually feeling a bit restless, which made Nia stifle a giggle.
After the dinner, Hex and the others returned to their camp to rest and promised to inform them of any developments right away.
Natasha and the others volunteered to keep watch, and Roy gladly took the chance to nap with Nia.
The forest was dangerous, and nobody set up tents; they simply threw blankets over themselves and slept on the ground to respond to any emergencies immediately.
Roy and Nia slept a little farther from the camp, beneath a tree hole.
“By the way, if what Hex says is true, the Sword Demon really is amazing.”
“You’re still thinking about the Sword Demon…”
Nia’s shining eyes made her look like a little fan gushing over a celebrity, and Roy couldn’t help but smirk.
What would this girl think if she knew I was the Sword Demon?
“Of course! The Sword Demon is our lifesaver! And that cloak he wears is super cool!”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Listening to the girl animatedly describe the Sword Demon‘s charm, Roy felt a bit complicated.
It’s nice to be admired by Nia, but thinking about the guards’ infatuation with the Sword Demon made Roy feel conflicted.
I wonder if Nia thinks the same as those girls.
Just thinking about this while hearing Nia chant the Sword Demon‘s name made Roy unable to feel happy anymore.
“What’s wrong?” Nia seemed to notice something.
“Nothing. I was just thinking, if you really met the Sword Demon, what would you want to say to him?”
Sensing the boy’s jealousy, Nia’s pupils constricted, a smile forming on her lips as she fought back laughter.
What’s this? Am I really just envious of my own self?
“Let me think, what would I want to say…”
Nia rested her head on Roy’s shoulder, casually pondering: “First, we need to express our gratitude for saving my life! And I should compliment his style; I mean, he has great taste! Oh, and maybe ask for his autograph to show off to others. As for the rest…”
Her words trailed off, prompting Roy to ask, “What else?”
“There’s also…”
Suddenly, Nia turned to face him, her green eyes locking onto his.
Her long lashes and emerald glow resembled fireflies in the dark, shimmering with a hazy yet beautiful light.
Even though they were discussing the Sword Demon, all that remained in her gaze was Roy’s figure, as if nothing else could fit in.
Her smiling expression flushed with a rosy hue, sweet enough to make one’s heart melt.
As his heart raced, Roy had a hunch.
She wouldn’t have already figured it out…
“Actually, I want to tell him—”
“Wait, something’s up.”
Roy suddenly looked up, avoiding the girl’s gaze, his expression turning serious.
Without a moment to feel upset about the changed atmosphere, Nia sensed something off as well, her expression shifting after a brief hesitation.
An unpleasant feeling was coming from afar, the direction of Hex’s camp.
Then, a heart-wrenching scream cut through the air, followed by the horrifying howl of wolves.
Meanwhile, at Hex’s camp.
Shadows surged through the campsite, and neither the watchful adventurers nor the two A-Rank experts noticed the intruding shadows until it was too late.
A wolf emerged from the darkness and swiftly bit the throat of a sleeping adventurer.
More wolves followed, tearing through the camp and unleashing a bloody storm.
The sleeping adventurers were caught completely off guard, suffering significant losses before they could identify their foes.
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack! Beware of the shadows!”
Hex punched a wolf off his teammate and pulled his ally up.
Joe spun two curved blades, forming a web of sharp edges, slicing down all the incoming wolves.
The two A-Rank adventurers managed to prevent a total wipeout, but these wolves were unusually clever. After assessing their strength, they opted not to engage directly and prioritized attacking the other adventurers, leaving them exhausted from having to help.
Joe yelled angrily, “Shadow Wolves? Damn it, didn’t they only appear in the Everdark Forest?!”
“How would I know… Joe, watch out! Something’s coming!”
The campfire was abruptly engulfed.
Alongside the encroaching darkness came a mass of swirling shadows, exuding a presence far stronger than that of the nearby Shadow Wolves, making both A-Rank experts focus entirely on defense rather than helping their allies.
Glaring fiercely at the rolling darkness, Joe muttered, “That aura… at least Sequence 6, and not just one of them!”
The bloody skirmish continued among the camp, while in the distance the darkness revealed claws and fangs. Just as the dark was about to transform into wolf form, a terrifying pressure surged like lightning, freezing everyone’s movements.
In an instant, the pressure was gone, just like a flash in the night sky.
However, the wolf pack abruptly stopped, tucking their tails and retreating back into the shadows, and the ominous darkness that had made the two A-Rank adventurers apprehensive seemed to recede like an energy tide.
