Chapter 53: After the Miracle Fades, Life Shatters as Usual
Fighting among the same kind always feels like it’s taught by the same master; without extreme individual differences, it’s impossible to break through the moves.
The competition for mates among water dragons is no different. The only effective way to cause damage is by biting.
But Jié Jié isn’t the one being bitten; he’s the one biting other water dragons.
He feeds off these water dragons, but unfortunately, water dragons lack a refined sense of taste when eating and don’t have much appreciation for fine cuisine.
Eating while fighting in the water also lacks a certain sense of ceremony.
Before the water dragons reached the shore, the waves they stirred up had already swept over the lake bank, expanding into a wetland.
During the fight, Jié Jié also felt the overwhelming water flow that surpassed all the water dragons, along with a special pheromone.
Pheromones are never just about reproductive desires; they can also be categorized under smell as a way to distinguish between different individuals.
It was an emerald water dragon, an older water dragon who has long passed its prime, merely coming to add some excitement without intending to participate in the young water dragons’ conflicts.
Finally, Jié Jié leaped ashore with two lingering ingredients, no longer hiding his true intentions.
The scales on the water dragon’s body bulged into uneven red shells. In the water dragons’ confusion, the fireball steamed up a mist of water vapor and exploded on the head of a water dragon.
On land, the water dragon lost its balance, suffered a severe blow to the head, and fell directly onto the ground.
Jié Jié jumped with the heat wave from the explosion of the fireball, flapping his wings, diving, grabbing the scales with his claws, embedding them into the flesh skillfully gripping the ribs, lifting the water dragon high into the air.
The water dragons were a bit stunned, but instantly recovered their united state.
Both the two water dragons on the shore and those still watching in the lake reacted similarly, including the female water dragon who had previously pursued Jié Jié.
But against the flying fire dragon, their only counterattack was to shoot out high-pressure water jets from their mouths, which brought less pressure to Jié Jié than the water dragon wriggling under his claws.
Now on land rather than in the lake, he no longer had to worry about being beaten after falling into the water, so his actions became bolder.
Moreover, he didn’t intend to take the water dragon away directly from the sky; he just wanted to move it farther from the lake to reduce its chances of escaping back into the water.
The water dragon was thrown far from the lakeside, surprisingly recovering quickly despite the heavy blow to its head.
Unfortunately, it could only attack chaotically below, unable to reach the male fire dragon in the sky.
As Jié Jié climbed slightly while dropping the water dragon, he immediately dived again.
But this time, the attack wasn’t with the claws but with the head.
In the dive, the transformation from male fire dragon to black wolf bird caused only a momentary imbalance, but this imbalance was smoothed out by inertia.
Until the beak of the black wolf bird pierced through the body of the water dragon, knocking it down again.
Jié Jié pulled his head out of the soft body of the water dragon and raised it, the powerful natural weapon tearing directly through the water dragon’s skull.
The first water dragon met its end under the can opener.
This was far more effective than any painless collision.
The next moment, a water dragon twenty-four meters long slid on land, colliding with terrifying force, throwing him out.
Jié Jié fluttered his wings in mid-air and landed, shaking his whole body to stabilize himself before stomping again to hover in the air.
“Ga!”
The sharp sound was given substance by the fiercely burning flames, and a fireball twice the size of the black wolf bird’s head exploded above the water dragon’s head.
“Bang!”
Because it used its abdomen to slide, keeping its base low and steady, the spines on the water dragon’s head were blown off, revealing crystalline skull beneath the charred scales.
But it was still alive and able to continue its counterattack.
Was it relying on its brain or instinct? Or perhaps the fish brain couldn’t recognize its own death?
Jié Jié didn’t understand, but he was greatly shocked.
Perhaps this was the miracle of life belonging to large monsters, like the savage jaw dragon that danced drunkenly in death under the moonlight.
Or like the battle-hardened male fire dragon that burst into brilliant flames at the end of its life.
“Chii!”
A white arc pierced the sky, the intense impact of the high-pressure water jet shot from the lake made the black wolf bird stumble in the air, maintaining its dive while descending and activating the gliding bird car.
But Jié Jié missed this time, his head plunging into the soil for the first time.
He predicted the water dragon’s forward movement based on its actions, but didn’t expect it to simply shudder its body, actually not moving forward.
Perhaps it realized too late that its exposed skull would lead to its downfall, but it tricked Jié Jié.
The soil was soft, making it easy to pull his head out, but the water dragon sliding on its belly suddenly leapt, its massive size and weight pressing directly onto the black wolf bird.
Compared to the water dragon, the black wolf bird could only be called petite.
The water dragon’s body twisted on Jié Jié, hypnotic fluids sprinkled, making him feel a bit drowsy.
But the effect was poor; how could anyone sleep with such a huge thing pressing and wriggling madly on top!
Drowsiness was burned away by anger, and the water dragon could only feel the cool hard body beneath it heating up, the shell turning into fur.
Terrifying strength flipped it off, the mouth named “savage jaw” biting the water dragon’s neck, sharp teeth breaking through the scales and sinking into the soft flesh with the upper and lower jaws.
Stomp with the footpad, twist!
“Crack.”
The second one, the water dragon with its neck twisted off fell to the ground, flopping like a fish on a cutting board, unable to stand up or return to the water it relied on.
After the brain was turned to mush inside the cracked skull, the water dragon’s nerves could no longer bring its body back to life.
After the miracle fades, life shatters as usual.
The savage jaw dragon cast a menacing gaze toward the water dragons still watching by the lake. They now looked like deflated eggplants.
The bodies of two of their kin lying there spoke of the bloody truth; the pheromones for reproduction had long dissipated under Jié Jié’s violent actions.
Although the savage jaw dragon is a very common theropod species, it can be “common” on land full of fierce competition—
The savage jaw dragon is already very capable!
Those flying in the sky or swimming in the sea mostly have environmental advantages and unique privileges—how could they compete with those walking on the ground!
The water dragons roared, even the largest emerald water dragon chose not to rashly go ashore again.
The terrifying scars on that old one were probably left during its time on land.
As the water dragons retreated, Jié Jié closed his eyes in fatigue, taking a short rest thanks to the residual effects of the water dragon’s hypnotic fluid.
Two water dragons, enough to eat for a long time, right?
One steamed, one braised?
No no no, without good materials to handle the ingredients properly, touching the ingredients with flames would be too wasteful.
But—

When you see a mighty male fire dragon soaring through the sky, you can't confidently say it’s truly a fire dragon—because it might have been a rare silver fire dragon before you noticed it.
If you suspect it was a silver fire dragon, it could have been a spinosaurus even earlier.
When someone tells you it was once a spinosaurus, you still can’t be sure—because before others saw it, it might have been an elder extinction dragon.
You may feel certain it’s a flying dragon by now, yet you can't assert that either—because underground where you can't see, it might actually be an ancient mountain dragon.
So, what is it really?
In the beginning,
It was just a hairy spider.
