Chapter 9

“Ah, finally.”

[Extracurricular Club: Special Phenomenon Task Force]

Finally, one of the empty fields on my student ID has been filled.

Special Phenomenon Task Force. It sounds cool just from the name.

Who am I? One of only three members of the Special Phenomenon Task Force at Millennium Academy.

It’s almost perfect for someone trying to live as a normal student.

Of course, the name section is still blacked out, but I have a feeling that will change eventually.

To be honest, I’ve kind of given up on figuring it out. If my name hasn’t appeared by now, there must be some special reason, though I don’t know what.

The only relief is that, thanks to some convenient world-building, people call me “Nanashi” (No Name) when they refer to me directly, so it doesn’t cause much trouble in everyday life.

I guess things will get better once I get my real name. That’s what I hope, at least.

“Now, almost everything is wrapping up.”

It’s been about two weeks since the Sentum Tower completely shut down. The experts seemed surprised that the state of anarchy lasted longer than they had predicted, but I instinctively felt that the time was approaching.

The main story of the Blue Archive. The moment will soon come when the ‘Teacher’ arrives.

“Wakamo has started acting more prominently, and the SRT is practically disbanding. Kaya probably made contact with the FOX Squad around this time, didn’t she?”

Things I thought about stopping in the past. But now that I’ve started my activities, the lack of information and the physical distance make it difficult to intervene as I’d hoped.

I’ve been continuously thinking of ways to change that, but whether it’ll actually work is uncertain. Even now, just dealing with the crimes happening around Millennium Academy and the Central Autonomous Zone is almost overwhelming.

I occasionally go to Gehenna or Trinity to help out, but so far, the Central Autonomous Zone still has the most crime, so that’s where I’ve limited my activity.

One fortunate development, thanks to Himari, is that I can now listen in on Valkyrie communications, much like Spider-Man. Having someone else cover the areas I can’t reach makes being a hero much easier.

I can’t rely on my senses alone forever.

However, in this vast city, searching for crimes using only my senses has disappeared, and instead, a new kind of sensitivity has sharpened. It’s like my ability to sense danger has become clearer and more detailed.

It’s hard to describe. Where I used to sense someone’s ‘actions,’ now I can sense ‘events’ themselves that could be dangerous.

“Maybe that’s why I’ve been feeling oddly anxious lately.”

Even though I save people every day and keep training, the feeling of unease in my mind won’t fade.

It’s like something big is about to happen.

When I told Himari and Amy about this, they had no idea why.

“At least there’s no danger here in Millennium,” they said.

So, is something happening somewhere else?

I don’t know. Unless I can see the future like Seya, I won’t be able to figure it out.

For now, I’ll just remind myself to be always cautious.

Chirp chirp!

[A disturbance has occurred at Kawaminami Station! Immediate backup is requested! I repeat, a disturbance has occurred at Kawaminami Station! The perpetrator is believed to be a criminal who has escaped from the Corrections Bureau—]

[Currently holding citizens hostage! Immediate backup requested!]

Of course, that doesn’t mean I stop my activities. When I hear the Valkyrie dispatch, I rise from my seat and put on the mask I’m familiar with.

It was time to get back to work.

“Phew…”

In the late hours of the night, I finally made it home and let out a deep sigh.

I pulled off my mask and the outer layers of my clothing, and instantly, the floor filled with dust.

“Ugh, I hate this… I need to clean this eventually.”

If only someone would provide me with a maid.

I muttered this as I looked at the now dusty floor. It was from all the dust and debris I accumulated while handling the events around the city today.

It must be because there’s been an increase in recent bomb and fire-related incidents.

…Actually, was this always the case?

Between grenades going off and tanks rolling around, it feels like common sense breaks down.

“Ah… I need to change my mask.”

I looked at my dirty fox mask that had accumulated grime over a few weeks. Maybe it’s time to switch to something else.

I was quite attached to it, but if I keep pushing it, it’ll likely fall apart completely.

“…I should take a shower. I feel like I could collapse from pain.”

With no one around to watch, I carelessly threw all my clothes and shuffled into the bathroom like a creeper. I looked in the mirror, swiping my bangs to the side, and stared at a face I barely recognized.

What needs to come out comes out, what needs to go in goes in…

“…Stop it. What are you doing?”

I smiled awkwardly and wiped the thoughts from my head. After calming myself, I inspected my body carefully.

Ragged white hair and sunken blue eyes. Just like Himari said, I have sharp yet pleasant-looking features despite my tired appearance, and I quite like it.

Simultaneously, however, I noticed the blue bruises and open wounds on my body leaking blood.

I definitely don’t look like a high school girl.

Huh. A laugh escapes my lips.

Spider-Man has enhanced senses but still gets hurt because, no matter how great your senses are, there are some things you just can’t avoid.

Especially attacks aimed at the public, which I must intercept with my body.

“Ugh, it hurts so much.”

Using my usual casual tone, I leaned against the bathroom wall and sighed deeply, then turned on the shower with trembling hands, letting the warm water hit my body.

Shwooosh—

“Ughhh.”

I know water isn’t good for open wounds, but I don’t stop the shower. Why?

“Hmm, it’s still amazing every time.”

Because by now, the red blood streaming from all the numerous wounds on my body has stopped, leaving just the scabs formed from dried blood.

One of the abilities I’ve acquired since landing here: regenerative powers.

They aren’t like Deadpool or Wolverine where you can instantly recover from being sliced in half or losing parts of your body.

It’s just that my regeneration is faster. Abrasions heal quickly, strength replenishes fast, and even severe bruises fade after a few days.

That’s about it.

“Maybe if it didn’t cause me pain while regenerating, it’d be more helpful.”

This annoying ability gives me excruciating pain right when I heal.

That’s why I usually take showers like this. Otherwise, I might unknowingly wake up screaming.

I actually did that at the beginning of my activities.

A deep sigh escapes me involuntarily. As I let the warm water rinse my body, I feel the accumulated fatigue rush in. Ugh, I’m about to collapse.

“…Why am I so tired lately, even though it’s just the usual hero work?”

Even though there hasn’t been a particular increase in the number of incidents or their difficulty, I’ve been feeling increasingly fatigued during activities.

There’s definitely something nagging at me lately, not just a little bit either.

“Stop, you. Just… stop.”

And most likely, the reason is that my enhanced senses keep going off randomly for no reason. They keep screaming that something major is about to happen, and it’s exhausting.

Moreover, it bothers me that nearly every criminal I catch lately has ties to the Correction Bureau. I know that many of them escaped after the state of anarchy began, but it still feels strange.

It’s like something’s artificial or staged.

If only I could determine what’s causing it and why it’s artificial.

“Ugh, my head won’t process it.”

Is it because I’ve been overworking it lately? My head, which usually churns ideas without fail, has temporarily stopped functioning.

Something definitely feels off, but I don’t understand what. And I can’t ask anyone about it either.

“…”

Ask?

Wait, hold on.

“Ah. I haven’t tried this method.”

I immediately reached out of the bathroom door and grabbed my phone, then connected a call and turned on the speaker.

♪♬♩~ ♫~~

…Huh.

A strangely old-fashioned ringtone plays.

After about four or five rings, a familiar voice finally came through from the phone.

[Oh, it’s you, Nanashi junior. What’s the matter?]

“Himari-sempai, is this a good time?”

The person I called was none other than Himari. It seemed she was doing something, as I could hear the clicking of a keyboard through the call.

…She’s working even at this time?

Are you really a frail sickly girl? What happened to your concept?

[Hehe, of course! But your voice sounds odd. Are you somewhere strange…? Still out and about?]

“I’m in the bathroom.”

[Uh…? You’re in the bathroom…? So…]

Our sempai doesn’t know that she shouldn’t ask such things, does she?

Smirking, I said,

“I’m completely naked.”

[Eh? Stop saying weird things!]

“But it’s the truth. I’ve completely stripped down. Totally nothing on. I’m just starting to wash, so my whole body is wet—”

[St, stop it! What lady says such dirty things!?]

As I confidently stated my current state, Himari began to stammer on the other side, clearly flustered.

Hmm, that’s enough.

I grinned at her reaction, and through the speaker, she seemed to start pouting cutely.

[Hey! Stop using such strange words! You’re teasing your sempai, but I didn’t teach you to be so bold…!]

“Together with Amy, you have no tolerance for such things.”

[That’s… that’s a different matter entirely…]

“Pfft. Is that so?”

Well, Koharu from Trinity keeps talking about executions while watching explicit content all the time, but…

Is this something a bit different?

Anyway.

“There’s nothing, really. I just wanted to ask sempai something.”

[Hmm! Well then, as a junior’s request, I’d be glad to help. What do you want to ask?]

I briefly explained to Himari, who had just regained her composure. As she listened intently, she began to make the scariest prediction.

“…There seems to be someone orchestrating all this.”

“Eh?”

Now it was my turn to be startled.

W-Wait. Himari, what are you talking about? You’re saying that all the Correction Bureau criminal cases that have happened so far were orchestrated by someone?

[Well, I’ve heard hints about it, but recently, there’s been a lot of circulation of weapons and explosives into the Black Market from an unknown origin. I think all the events lately are connected to this.]

“So, the one orchestrating the distribution of these weapons is the mastermind?”

[No. Even if someone has impressive distribution capabilities, coordinating all the Correction Bureau criminals to simultaneously carry out coordinated terrorist attacks is impossible. And that’s something money can’t achieve either.]

Right, it’s inconceivable to think criminals, who’d be caught and dragged back to the Correction Bureau, would act out just for money.

Then, who’s the mastermind?

“So, sempai, who do you think is the mastermind behind all this?”

[…Do you really think I’m a super robot who knows everything? Is that your misunderstanding?]

“Huh.”

Caught.

Is this omniscience?

[Alright, I’ll let it slide this time, Mr. Junior. But from the next time onward, there will be a charge, so prepare yourself.]

“Uhh… thank you.”

[Just joking. But listen, I believe you’ve probably heard this.]

Himari paused for a moment, then emphasized her statement.

“One of the Seven Sins, Kosaka Wakamo.”

“…!?”

W-WTF. Why do you show up here?

“Why… why do you think it’s her?”

“Do you know this saying? ‘The cunning vixen lures with a few words, and one’s legs move before they even realize.'”

“…”

Yes, there is such an aspect to Wakamo.

Himari explained that there must be a reason why the Correction Bureau criminals simultaneously caused disturbances and that Wakamo was likely behind it all. Because she was the only one who could control and direct the newly escaped delinquent students.

[The reason she’s called the ‘Misfortune’ is not just because she was uncontrollable during the ‘Hundred Ghosts Parade,’ but also because her every word, action, and gesture invited calamity.]

“…”

[Didn’t you hear that the incidents in D.U. have recently changed? The frequency of explosions has increased, intentionally leading to loss of life, and there are traces that could only have been staged in some artificial way.]

“Indeed, that’s exactly what happened…”

[The exact purpose is still unclear, but all of these incidents seem to match her method of attack.]

Kosaka Wakamo.

An elite student from the Hundred Ghosts Parade and one of the Seven Sins.

If she truly is behind all these incidents…

‘Then, will I have to fight her someday?’

The prologue hasn’t even started, yet the idea of fighting Wakamo already looms before me.

“Phew, this is already exhausting. Seven Sins, huh.”

[Hehe, you’ll fight much scarier monsters someday.]

“…”

Himari’s voice, filled with laughter, hints at something.

I have a rough idea of what she means.

The Decagram and Gematria. The main antagonists of the Blue Archive. She’s talking about them.

“Anyway, thanks for the help, sempai.”

[You’re welcome. How can I not help such a cute junior? I am the best sickly girl sempai at Millennium Academy, after all?]

“Ah, yes. You’re the best, Himari-sempai.”

[…Being called ‘sempai’ sounds so pleasant indeed. Hehehe.]

While bitterly smiling at Himari’s typical self-praise, I suddenly noticed her curious voice through the phone line.

“So, junior, let me ask you something.”

“What is it?”

What does she plan to ask?

[Can you beat Wakamo?]

“…”

I fell silent.

How would I know that…?
