My two wives and I moved to the central part of the city.
To be precise, it was the northeastern part of the area directly managed by Elena.
There were two bridges nearby that made it easy to cross into the northern and eastern parts of the city. Of course, looking at it from the other side, it was also a place where assassins could quickly hit and run.
We were well-prepared for that, of course.
There were several measures that Elena, I, underboss Carso, and consigliere Salmo devised together.
Anyway, today.
My two wives and I stepped foot into the mansion where we would be living from now on for the first time.
“….”
“Feli, what’s wrong?”
As the large front gate opened and the view of the beautiful garden was revealed, Felicita’s expression was anything but normal.
“Why do I see so many familiar faces?”
“Ah, you’ve arrived, Godfather.”
Just as Felicita spoke, a gardener who was kneeling and working in the garden approached us.
His identity was George Skela, a hitman popularly known for using bullets dipped in cyanide, nicknamed ‘Ant’.
“Skela, you seem well-suited to being a gardener more than I expected.”
“Perhaps. But more importantly, thank you for hiring me.”
Skela expressed his gratitude for being employed as the gardener of this mansion to me and my two wives.
As we passed Skela and headed toward the entrance of the mansion, Felicita noted the other faces present in the garden.
“They’re all hitmen affiliated with the Felini Family, right?”
“That’s right. I only chose trustworthy ones among them.”
Elena affirmed Felicita’s statement, her expression showing confidence as she looked down at her.
“That red deer human over there is McClun, isn’t it?”
“Yep, Feli. I hired McClun and all his crew.”
“At this rate, it feels less like a mansion and more like a meeting place for hitmen.”
“That’s not entirely wrong. But on the flip side, it means we can get jobs done whenever we want.”
It wasn’t bad for the hitmen either. Their job was to kill people.
Of course, not all requests were like that; some just involved enough intimidation to make a point, but those jobs paid less.
Hence, the tasks entrusted to us by the Felini Family were a substantial source of income for them.
The hitmen received adequate pay for fulfilling their apparent roles in the mansion.
This provided them with a stable income in their unstable line of work.
They weren’t giving up their main jobs either. In emergencies, they could take on our requests for hits.
In a sense, it could be considered a dream job for them, right?
“Luke, Elena. So? You’re not seriously thinking about leaving security of the mansion solely up to killers, are you?”
“Of course not.”
I replied immediately to Felicita’s question.
Aside from them, there were also those who resided in this mansion.
They could be largely divided into two types. The first were my pack of wolves, and the second were Elena’s organization members.
Moreover, the mansion’s servants weren’t just ordinary folks.
They were either family or relatives of our Felini Family members, or people with direct connections.
All these individuals in this large mansion combined to make the place function as a kind of gigantic fortress.
“This is way more serious than I thought.”
“Not bad, right?”
“Yeah, it’s a good place for our kids to live, so being safe is definitely a plus.”
“Both of you, that’s enough chit-chat. Let’s head inside.”
Elena led me and Felicita into the mansion.
It seemed like a natural reaction, but she didn’t seem to want me and Felicita to be getting along too well.
…I didn’t think Elena was usually this jealous.
As we entered the foyer, two wolves in servant outfits opened the door for us.
“This feels like we’re some kind of nobility.”
“In a way, we kind of are.”
The Felini Family and Marinelli Family. Both families were undeniably the rulers of the underworld in this city.
Of course, our family was started by my father, and although the Marinelli Family, with Vito Marinelli, built up their empire from the ground, they didn’t have that much history.
“By the way, what happened to the previous owners?”
“Don’t worry. No one got killed.”
Acquiring this mansion was incredibly simple. Our consigliere took the lead on it.
Salmo presented a fair price to the previous owner of the mansion, and the wise former owner gladly accepted Salmo’s offer.
“Luke, speaking of which, what about my animals?”
“Oh, I moved them to a proper place.”
Like a greenhouse or something.
Since there was such a space, I had put the animals Felicita took care of there for the time being.
“I wanted to get rid of that moth long ago, though.”
“Elena, it’s not just any moth; it’s Hebili.”
“Yeah, whether it’s Hebili or whatever, it’s just a moth at the end of the day.”
If Hebili could hear Elena, he’d probably be a bit disheartened. Though, I agreed that his appearance was shocking, he was actually a pretty good guy.
Just judging by how he liked to heal others’ wounds showed this fact.
The mansion had two floors above ground and one below.
The sight that greeted us as we stepped inside was a pleasant balance of moderately classy wallpaper and simple walls, contrasted with a lavishly patterned red carpet flooring.
“The stairs look sturdy.”
“They probably are. But why do you care about the stairs?”
“Well, they need to be sturdy if they’re going to hold Elena’s weight.”
“What?!”
It was just a short joke, but it looked like Elena and Felicita were about to start a scuffle again.
Though their bellies weren’t too big yet, they were undeniably pregnant.
Naturally, I made sure to stay out of it to keep them from roughhousing too much.
“Elena, Felicita, you both should start thinking about the babies in your bellies.”
“…Luke, I didn’t start it! That girl did first…”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect you to respond so seriously, Elena.”
“….”
Felicita’s apology felt less sincere than just keeping quiet.
Eventually, Elena swiftly grabbed Felicita’s tail and yanked it hard.
“…Hey!”
Felicita’s reaction was more annoyed than I expected. Elena seemed surprised by her reaction, but that was about it.
“Why? You suddenly seem so tense. Your tail must be sensitive or something?”
“Hey! Somebody, help me!”
“Yes, Godfather!”
I called to the wolves nearby before Felicita could respond.
Even though Elena and Felicita demanded the wolves step back by asserting their authority, the wolves prioritized adhering to my authority.
*
Finally, we arrived at a room on the second floor.
It was filled with luxurious furniture and decorations, yet it was only the three of us there.
“Luke, is Vero coming over after work, right?”
“Yeah. There are no plans for him to live separately.”
“…But don’t get too comfortable. You never know what Veronica might do.”
I showed my fist in response to Elena’s statement.
“Luke, every time something happens, don’t think about just punching it down.”
“Then what should I do?”
Are you suggesting I should knock them out instead? It wasn’t impossible, but it was certainly quite the tricky task.
“You need to think about solving it fundamentally.”
“Well, I don’t think that can be resolved fundamentally.”
In reply to Elena’s words, Felicita chimed in. Hope it’s not another argument, right?
“What do you mean by that?”
“It means that we can’t stop Vero from liking Luke. After all, it’s not strange for a sister to like her brother.”
“…?”
“Viewing him like a man right now is kind of weird, though.”
As Felicita elaborated, Elena’s expression changed dramatically.
“We can only help regulate that level.”
“I think you underestimate Veronica too much.”
Elena mentioned that Veronica was a spider that grew up under Rita Carmen. She moved not with a wolf’s mindset but with that of a spider.
While the two were discussing Veronica, I took the chance to look around the room. The Lupus Carlton Hotel wasn’t bad, but this mansion had its own charm.
The antique, vintage feel of the furniture was quite nice too.
“Oh, Luke. Are you free for dinner tonight?”
“I’m free anyway since I’ve cleared my schedule for the day. But is there some special occasion?”
“I need to go to a funeral.”
“…Whose funeral?”
As Felicita mentioned the funeral, Elena immediately asked before I could.
“….”
Felicita hesitated for a moment.
“Luke, do you remember the guy who was in charge of me in the Rat Hole?”
“Oh, that guy. I don’t know his name, but I remember his voice.”
I thought I might have seen his face as I passed by.
“That guy’s dead, huh?”
“Yeah, seems he got taken down by the rat catcher.”
The rat catcher.
The so-called ‘take it or leave it’ information handlers for the ordinary citizens who suffered under the Rat Hole’s dealings.
They were meticulous and faceless, relentlessly targeting those who escaped from the Rat Hole. The fact that he was taken down by the rat catcher probably implied he didn’t die nicely.
“Felicita, you don’t really need to go yourself.”
“Yeah, Elena’s right. It’s not good for you to move around too much since you’re pregnant. I’ll just go alone.”
“…No, that’s fine.”
Felicita rubbed her belly as she replied.
She thought it was still early enough that it wouldn’t hinder her activities much, and since someone who was taking care of her had died, she felt it was only proper to go.
I reluctantly said I would accompany her. Even though I felt I could handle it alone, Felicita was very stubborn.
Of course, it wasn’t like we were going right away. Afterward, we decided to head to a suitable room to watch TV.
After all, today was the day of the Borges hearing.
I distinctly remember what Paragoni said last time: aside from the Sanchez Family, the other two families.
Carmen Family’s boss Rita Carmen had escaped, and Dragovich Family’s boss Mikhail Dragovich was soon to be summoned as a witness.
But the actual witness summoned today was… Rita Carmen.
Without knowing exactly what had happened, the hearing summoned the leader of the spiders, Rita Carmen.
It was undoubtedly a rare scene.
