Evan couldn’t find the words to speak easily.
It was because he couldn’t recall the answer to Lucia’s question.
From the current perspective, she was indeed a clear villain.
She had brutally killed her companions right before his eyes; it wouldn’t be surprising if she faced divine retribution immediately.
But that was limited to the present moment.
From the perspective of the past, there was no definitive reason to label her as a villain.
Though some demons had moved, neither high-ranking demons nor Lucia herself had made any moves.
The incident in which a third of the continent’s population vanished was caused not by her but by the previous Demon King.
The other minor incidents that emerged were also unrelated to Lucia.
“The Demon King is evil.”
Lucia spat out while still gazing at Evan.
“Wasn’t it you who labeled me as a villain based solely on that one reason without any other evidence and embarked on this journey?”
“·····.”
“Or were the only ones here naive fools who didn’t even doubt it?”
Evan’s expression twisted into one of anger.
He attempted to take a deep breath to calm himself, but the turmoil in his heart wouldn’t subside. Finally, he yanked the dagger buried deep in her clavicle out and pressed his thumb against the wound.
“Ahhhhh!!”
A scream erupted.
“Thinking back, it was foolish of me to be troubled by this.”
As he pressed the wound, blood gushed out.
“It doesn’t matter whether you were a villain in the past. The you in front of me now is a hateful being who killed my comrades and caused me to lose my parents.”
“I have no recollection of killing your parents…”
“Although you didn’t kill them directly, it’s no different than if you had.”
“Ahh… I think I get the gist of what happened.”
Lucia smirked as she continued.
“The expression you had when you saved me yesterday on the bridge was one of desperation. If I combine that with what you just said, it seems your parents took their own lives. Am I right?”
Crash.
Evan felt as though his mind was being shaken by her words.
The scene he had witnessed three years ago resurfaced in his mind.
It felt as though his insides were turning.
In an attempt to suppress the rising nausea, he pulled his hand away from Lucia and covered his mouth.
But that was a mistake.
His hands were drenched in blood, and the metallic scent tormented him.
“Ugh…!”
Ultimately, Evan couldn’t hold back the sickness and began vomiting.
Having eaten nothing but porridge the day before, his empty stomach was in agony.
“Evan!”
Kerena rushed over to him and tried to heal his abdomen with magic.
However, Evan stopped her.
“You don’t need to waste your magic on something like this. Just refrain from using magic unless I ask.”
“Still…”
“The person involved said they’re fine. Go heal that woman.”
The murderous tone in his words caused a flustered Kerena to retreat, leaving him with no choice but to heal Lucia.
Meanwhile, Evan took a long breath, trying to calm his erratic breathing.
“Haah…”
His gaze fell upon Lucia, who was receiving treatment. She looked at Kerena tending to her with an expressionless face, not resisting at all.
With a sudden move, Evan slapped her cheek hard.
“Ouch…”
Lucia touched her now-red cheek and looked up at him.
“You damned witch. You just had to bring up the memories I’d prefer to forget.”
“I’ll be more careful next time. I didn’t mean it; it was said in the heat of the moment.”
“Careful, my ass.”
Slap!
This time, her other cheek flushed red.
Blood trickled from her burst lip.
“I’ll let this slide this time. But if the same thing happens again, just know that you won’t get the death you desire.”
“I don’t know what to make of your kindness.”
“If you understand, then shut that insolent mouth of yours.”
“Can’t I take it as a compliment on my wit?”
“Shut the hell up.”
Evan grimaced as he wiped the blood-stained dagger with a handkerchief.
“Let’s call it a day. I’m feeling so messed up that if I let my emotions take over, I might really end up killing you.”
“Is this your version of consideration?”
“It has nothing to do with consideration for you.”
“Of course, it wouldn’t.”
“Don’t smile like that. It’s disgusting.”
“Are you now trying to suppress even natural reactions?”
Lucia pouted, looking resentful, like she was putting on a performance.
“I know you aren’t truly upset, so stop making that face.”
“I’ll try.”
“Don’t just try; do it well. I’m leaving.”
With that said, the basement door closed behind him.
*
Once outside the basement, the first thing Evan did was head to the study.
Earlier, he had been so enraged focusing on torturing Lucia that he had overlooked something that had nagged at him.
“It must be here somewhere…”
While rummaging through the shelves, a book thick with dust caught his eye.
“Found it.”
It was a history book his father used to read to him often.
Evan quickly brushed off the dust and opened the book.
“Demon King, Demon King…”
Flip.
He flipped through the pages rapidly, searching for the necessary information.
Worried it might take a while because of how thick the book was, he was relieved to find that the section on the Demon King was relatively towards the front.
‘Found it.’
The four Demon Kings that existed in the Aisha continent.
He sat down straight and began to read.
‘First Demon King, Idonia Barbier.’
The first Demon King to appear on the continent, and due to being a figure from so long ago, most records about him had been lost.
The only information left was that he was known for his face and for establishing the definition of evil.
‘I’d love to find out more about the earliest Demon King, but how can I research someone who died 3000 years ago…’
Evan turned the page without hesitation.
‘Second Demon King, Iselina Reitz.’
The second Demon King on the continent. Responsible for the “Bloody Festival,” a calamity that nearly erased Lorencia from history during a time when the Holy Kingdom was in a celebratory mood.
She harbored a strong animosity towards the Holy Kingdom and was killed by Apostles who were nearby at the time.
There was no explanation as to why she had such strong animosity.
“What a lot of hidden details…”
Evan sighed as he read the book.
He had come to investigate, yet he felt there was far more that was unknown than known.
Despite being dead, her corpse exuded a powerful magical energy, leading to her being kept deep in the Holy Kingdom’s basement… What a useless piece of information.
He turned the page again.
This time, a familiar name caught his eye.
It wasn’t Lucia, but she was a character always mentioned whenever history was discussed.
‘Third Demon King, Lunia Yanel.’
Seven hundred years ago, she started a great war that wiped out a third of the continent’s population.
She was the Demon King who created the current Demon Realm.
There were ample records about Lunia Yanel there.
‘It seems there’s a lot of information about this relatively recent Demon King.’
Evan slowly started reading the contents.
The writings mostly chronicled the actions of the Demon King.
As he read, he found himself covering his mouth halfway through.
It was an unconscious reaction to the rising nausea.
‘How could someone do such things…?’
Lunia Yanel’s deeds were too brutal to put into words.
Despite being somewhat desensitized to these matters, even he thought that.
If an embodiment of evil truly existed, he might act similarly to her.
‘No wonder she was called the Queen of Demons.’
Evan struggled to keep reading, but in the end, he flipped through pages with barely a glance.
Once the section on Lunia Yanel ended, a very familiar face appeared before him.
‘…Lucia von Astrea.’
The fourth Demon King was listed there.
‘Huh?’
As he closely examined the written content, he sensed something off.
If one were to look only at the records of the Demon Kings, it should be the most recent entry, yet it had less written about it compared to the previous Demon King.
In fact, it seemed to be less than the second Demon King’s entry as well.
It wasn’t just because her reign was shorter.
According to the history book, her time as the Demon King lasted around 600 years, which was comparable to the other Demon Kings.
– Do I really think she’s evil?
‘Why the hell is that thought popping up now?’
If looking solely at the previous Demon Kings, one could definitively conclude they were evil.
However, looking at Lucia’s record, that thought seemed to slip away.
There was barely anything in her record that could classify as evil deeds.
‘Am I really thinking incorrectly?’
Doubts filled Evan’s head.
Could it be that she might not be a villain after all?
But soon, that doubt was wiped away from his mind.
Images of Lucia killing her companions in the Demon Realm flashed into his mind.
Her figure, drenched in blood as she ruthlessly slaughtered her allies.
‘No.’
Evan shook his head, forcing the harsh truth back into his mind.
‘She is a villain.’
And he clenched the dagger in his pocket tightly.
‘This is an unchangeable fact, and ultimately, I will kill her, and that fact will not change either.’
Absolutely.
