A Basement-Dwelling Loser, the Inquisitor – Chapter 77

“Rene unnie, Happy New Year!”

“Happy New Year, Rene!”

“I look forward to your help this year as well.”

When I woke up, Bora’s family had invaded our house.

With the rice cake soup made by Bora’s mother.

“Uh, um… I-I wish you and your family, Bora, a Happy New Year too… I’ll enjoy the rice cake soup…”

After such light greetings, Bora asked if I wanted to join her to play, but… I didn’t want to collapse right from the start of the New Year, so I declined.

[Tuni: Rene nim! Happy New Year!]

[Inquisition Officer: Happy New Year to you too, Tuni!]

[Tuni: I look forward to your help as well!]

[Inquisition Officer: Yes. I look forward to yours too.]

After replying to Tuni’s New Year greetings, while I was eating the rice cake soup made by Bora’s mother, various thoughts crossed my mind.

“Um…”

How will I spend this year?

Will I be able to make a living through broadcasting in the future?

If something happens and I ruin my broadcast, what should I do?

Will Bora continue to like me this year?

Can I maintain a good relationship with Tuni?

What if everyone gets tired of me, someone so out of place and unable to express myself, and leaves…

I’m used to being alone, but that doesn’t mean I prefer being alone…

“Ha…”

I know quite well that these negative thoughts aren’t good, but they’ve already become a habit that’s not easy to change.

In times like this, petting Bai’s fur was the best remedy…

He was always a nuisance, but when I was trapped in negative thoughts, he always comforted me by staying beside me.

“Huh.”

With those thoughts, after finishing the last bite of the rice cake soup and cleaning up, I sat down in a chair, turned on the computer, and logged into Remagal.

First, I wrote a carefully crafted post explaining how wrong being a heretic is, just like usual, and then I clicked on the concept post tab.

“…Huh?”

There were various posts, but the one that caught my eye the most was the one about the PK patch.

…Did they perhaps ease the PK penalties?

Honestly, the penalties were pretty harsh.

For those like me who try to repent heretics, it would be better to increase the mark occurrences from 3 to 5…

No. It could be a patch where mark stacks don’t accumulate at all when a heretic is captured.

(Patch Notes.jpg)

Summary in 3 lines:

1. PK stacks reduced to 2 + stack duration increased from 3 hours to a whopping 12 hours.

2. If you die with a mark, your equipped items are destroyed > Equipped items destroyed + 30% gold deducted.

3. Added notification effect if a PK player stays in a town for a certain period.

Here, they even mentioned that stacks could accumulate even without witnesses.

Gallery Master is screwed, lol!

ㅇㅇ: Was there no additional content added?

└NudiMaster: Originally, these guys don’t add that stuff in the patch notes.

└ㅇㅇ: I know, but I was just curious.

└NudiMaster: The patch size is huge, though, so they seem to imply that something was added.

└ㅇㅇ: Oh.

└ㅇㅇ: Starting from the New Year, it’s a major content addition, great!

ㅇㅇ1: If they’re happy being priests, let them be! Upvote! lol

└ㅇㅇ2: I’ve placed a sewing machine on the upvote button, lol.

└ㅇㅇ3: This must be a fake; I’m the 3943747th vote, lol.

“…This can’t be.”

It doesn’t make sense.

How did this happen?

If the content of the patch notes is all true, it means it’s become even harder to repent heretics.

Why?

The penalties were already overflowing… no, I even thought they were excessive.

This makes it seem like the dominion of New Dimension is supporting heretics…

There must be some misunderstanding.

Perhaps the note said, ‘All of this does not apply to heretics’?

Or perhaps…

“No way that can be true…”

Sending a false belief to a false deity to receive a false power—isn’t that terrifying and wrong?

It left me feeling quite regretful.

Of course, they probably know that fact as well.

If the developers of New Dimension truly didn’t know that fact, they would have considered completely removing PK as an option.

So this PK patch must have been implemented for some unavoidable reason.

“Then again, does it really matter…?”

Well, seeing the patch made me feel heated momentarily, but after calming down and thinking it through, it didn’t seem to matter that much.

While the penalties have increased a lot, recalling the other world reminded me that there were far worse things out there.

I’ve had a bounty on my head in the Empire.

I’ve been stuck in a labyrinth for eternity after mistakenly using a child.

I’ve fought three dragons.

I’ve had to subdue brainwashed cult Paladins without killing them.

Thinking about those experiences, this level of difficulty is… manageable.

Having reached such a conclusion, I stretched and logged into New Dimension.

Sometimes while broadcasting, there are people who ask me that question.

“Isn’t New Dimension just an RPG after all?”

Once you’ve cleared raids and farmed equipment, isn’t there no reason to log into New Dimension anymore?

After finishing what you could call homework, wouldn’t it be more fun to play AOS mode or PVP mode instead?

…Well, I don’t think it’s entirely wrong to say that.

The enjoyment of a game varies from person to person.

But the reason I like New Dimension is that I can directly explore this fantasy world.

If I had thought of New Dimension as just a simple RPG, would I have been able to defeat Albion?

Absolutely not.

Of course, I’m not wandering around with that in mind…

Anyway, that’s why I like this aspect of New Dimension.

“I look forward to your assistance.”

I nodded quietly at the old merchant’s words.

The quest I received from the guild this time was an E-rank quest to collect herbs.

I had to enter the Wavy Forest to the north of the village and gather 20 herbs called ‘Cheonhaecho,’ which was an easy and simple quest.

“Ha…”

The Wavy Forest is named so because the dense fog makes the surrounding scenery appear to ripple.

As if to prove that reason, when I entered the forest, the giant trees began to sway left and right as if they were dancing.

In a situation where I couldn’t properly secure my line of sight, it could be dangerous if a monster appeared, but that only applied if the monsters were strong.

The monsters here are, at most, just kobolds, lizardmen, and goblins.

Even if more than 100 appeared and attacked me at once, it means there’s no way I’ll lose.

Also, the rewards aren’t great either. To be honest, this was a quest that I wouldn’t gain anything from.

Even so, the reason I took this quest and came to the Wavy Forest is that I enjoy this kind of fantasy aspect of New Dimension.

Every time I do this, I feel like a true adventurer in a fantasy world.

In the other world as well, my dream was to be an adventurer…

〔Head-Broken Priest〕

“…Damn.”

Wait a minute.

Why is this heretic here?

Considering the level of this heretic, there shouldn’t be anything to gain here.

[Inquisition Officer: What are you doing here?]

“…I’m on a quest. I was asked to gather 30 kobold bones and 15 lizardmen clubs.”

When I checked the quests at the guild earlier, the receptionist had clearly said that one of the E-rank quests had already been taken by someone else.

From what I just heard, it was only natural to assume that this person was tackling that E-rank quest.

[Inquisition Officer: Do you really need to do such a quest at your level?]

“True, but… um. It’s fun, you know? Coming into an unfamiliar forest and seeing what’s around… how should I put it? It feels like I’ve become an adventurer right out of a real fantasy novel. Receiving requests from the guild… resolving them… and getting rewards…”

…This can’t be.

To think there was someone who shared my exact thoughts.

It felt strangely wonderful.

A feeling of familiarity and closeness, I’d say.

“Well, someone might think it’s childish, but that’s why I’m here. Besides, if you think about it, you don’t exactly meet the specs to be here either.”

[Inquisition Officer: That’s true.]

[Inquisition Officer: Actually, I’m here for a quest too.]

[Inquisition Officer: I need to gather 20 ‘Cheonhaecho’ herbs.]

“Oh… I was originally planning to do that, but collecting herbs didn’t suit my temperament, so I switched to this quest instead.”

[Inquisition Officer: I see.]

[Inquisition Officer: Oh, and I don’t think it’s childish. I understand exactly how that feels.]

“Really…?”

[Inquisition Officer: Yes.]

[Inquisition Officer: I’m here as proof of that, right?]

“…Then, can I ask you just one thing?”

[Inquisition Officer: Yes.]

“Is there really no option to simply go our own ways nicely here?”

[Inquisition Officer: No.]

“I’ve been steadily watching your broadcasts… Can’t you let this one slide just this once?”

[Inquisition Officer: No.]

“Does that mean it’s a no then?”

[Inquisition Officer: Yes.]

“I saw the patch note about the increased PK penalties.”

[Inquisition Officer: Yes.]

“…Tenren.”

[Inquisition Officer: You can repent.]

“Damn…”

[Inquisition Officer: Please repent.]

Kkang!

…Oh, right.

I should have asked for their nickname; I completely forgot.
