Chapter 11: Found – The Door to Rebirth in the Apocalypse – Full Book Online
Found.
“Let’s get acquainted first, my name is Zhuang Chen.” The red-haired beauty proactively greeted Gu Ning and Method.
“Gu Ning.”
“Method.”
After brief self-introductions.
Zhuang Chen asked, “You said a horde of zombies is coming, how did you know?”
“Ahem, probably a woman’s intuition,” Method coughed, answering for Gu Ning. Gu Ning gave him an approving look.
After a moment of silence.
Zhuang Chen glanced back at Gu Ning before turning away. When Gu Ning knocked on her car window and locked eyes with those stern and warning eyes, she didn’t doubt for a second that the owner of those eyes might be lying. Without hesitation, she stepped on the gas and crashed into them. Immediately, screams erupted, and she instinctively let Gu Ning and the cop into the car.
This really wasn’t like her style.
“Where are you planning to go next? I came here for tourism, never expected to encounter such a situation. All my friends are dead. The car was full when I came, now it’s just me,” she said, her voice devoid of any mourning for her “friends.” “I’m heading to the capital now, what about you?”
Method said, “We’re also heading towards the capital. But we need to find someone first. Gu Ning got separated from her parents, we need to find them before picking up my parents.”
“That’s a pity, I’m in a bit of a hurry. Otherwise, we could have traveled together,” Zhuang Chen expressed some regret. When she crashed, she didn’t miss Gu Ning’s performance—she saw Gu Ning stomp down a man trying to get up, snatched his gun, and threw it to the cop beside her. This wasn’t a reaction typical of a girl her age. Plus, there was a cop; traveling together might have increased her safety. Unfortunately, she didn’t want to be burdened with a car full of the elderly, weak, women, and children.
“Are you injured?” Gu Ning suddenly noticed a ten-centimeter-long bleeding gash on Zhuang Chen’s right arm.
Zhuang Chen glanced at it and said indifferently, “Some bastard tried to steal my car, I took him out. I don’t lose out.”
Gu Ning looked at Zhuang Chen’s forearm gripping the steering wheel, almost seeing the tense muscles beneath the skin. Her gaze flickered slightly, then she added, “You’re alone, no companions, no supplies, driving such a conspicuous car. I don’t think you’ll make it back to the capital smoothly.”
Zhuang Chen sneered, “How do you know I don’t have supplies?”
Gu Ning said, “Since I got in the car, you’ve glanced at my backpack three times and swallowed three times.”
Zhuang Chen was speechless, somewhat embarrassed and angry, “I can find food.”
“By the time you find food, the car might not be yours anymore,” Gu Ning continued. “You need supplies and companions. We need your car.” As she spoke, Gu Ning unzipped her backpack, revealing a full bag of food, then pulled out some medicine from the bottom. “We not only have food but also medicine. You know how hard it is to find medicine now, it could save your life at a critical moment.”
Zhuang Chen couldn’t help but swallow hard, feeling like the girl who looked much younger than her was now a devil beckoning to her, but she was powerless to resist.
She glared at Gu Ning, “How do I know you won’t steal my car?”
“If we wanted to steal your car, we wouldn’t be wasting time talking to you,” Gu Ning replied calmly.
Zhuang Chen stared at Gu Ning for a moment, then turned fiercely to Method, “Can you drive?!”
“Uh—yes.”
Without another word, Zhuang Chen stopped the car, opened Method’s door, and said, “Switch seats! You drive now!”
She then yanked the bewildered Method out and plopped down next to Gu Ning.
Method didn’t expect to get behind the wheel so quickly. Feeling the steering wheel, he suppressed his excitement and started the car.
Zhuang Chen rudely tore open a bread from Gu Ning’s backpack and stuffed it into her mouth, chewing while mumbling, “Just so you know, I have a bad temper. Anytime I’m not happy, I might kick you out. And when that happens, you have to get out.”
Method frowned, about to speak, when Gu Ning promptly said, “No problem.”
She then dug out all the medicine she had brought from the bottom of her backpack and said to Zhuang Chen, “Let’s treat your wound first.”
“Seriously, where did you get all this stuff? So much food, and such a variety of medicine,” Zhuang Chen grabbed a bottle of medical alcohol.
“Got lucky,” Gu Ning said, grabbing Zhuang Chen’s right arm to start treating the wound.
Gu Ning thought Zhuang Chen, with such a long wound and not flinching, wasn’t afraid of pain. But throughout the treatment, Zhuang Chen’s screams and gasps didn’t stop.
Method, hearing the screams from the back, thought Zhuang Chen was being bitten by a zombie.
After bandaging the wound, Zhuang Chen immediately regained her cold, beautiful demeanor and asked, “How long are you planning to search like this? It’s not like before, no phones or communication devices. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. I can’t keep wasting time with you.”
“They’re in a convoy, a yellow minibus. We know the general direction, should be easier to find,” Method replied.
Zhuang Chen yawned sleepily, “What if you can’t find them?”
This time, Method didn’t answer.
After a moment of silence, Gu Ning said, “Three days. If we still can’t find them, you can leave anytime.”
Zhuang Chen nodded, “Deal. But as payment for these three days, even if you leave, you have to give me enough supplies for three days. If you don’t agree, you can get out now.”
“No problem,” Gu Ning, facing Zhuang Chen’s harsh demands, remained as straightforward as ever. Right now, what she lacked least was supplies.
Zhuang Chen raised an eyebrow slightly, surprised by Gu Ning’s straightforwardness. After all, although Gu Ning’s backpack was full, rationing it would only last about ten days. Yet, she was willing to give up three days’ worth so readily…
Her gaze flickered slightly, then she suspiciously stared at Gu Ning. But Gu Ning remained calm, and after staring for a while, Zhuang Chen gave up, finding nothing on Gu Ning’s face.
At times like these, there’s no one to ask around.
Gu Ning estimated in her heart. The supplies they had searched for last time weren’t enough to last them a few days. They would definitely have to stop to look for supplies along the way. The time lost going back and forth, plus they had driven all night last night. If the direction was right, they should be close.
But Gu Ning never expected the reunion to happen so quickly.
At Zhuang Chen’s insistence, Gu Ning didn’t drive through the night.
As the sun disappeared behind the distant high-rises, they found a clearing to stop.
Obviously, most people wouldn’t travel at night under such dangerous circumstances. Before their car arrived, many vehicles were already parked here.
At least thirty or forty cars were parked here, all sorts of models—buses, minibuses, sedans, SUVs, vans, trucks. Many people were standing outside their cars discussing the current situation. Being together in such numbers gave people a sense of security.
The bold red, strikingly designed SUV immediately attracted a lot of attention. The Kehe Predator looked incredibly sturdy, with bits of zombie flesh stuck to the front from collisions, looking quite terrifying.
The SUV parked at the edge.
After being cooped up in the car all day, the three got out for some air.
As soon as they stepped out, countless eyes, some covert, some blatant, turned towards them.
Gu Ning was 1.63 meters tall, just average height. Zhuang Chen was a head taller, at least 1.7 meters, wearing a white long-sleeved silk shirt stained with dried blood and gray brain matter, black pants, and a pair of high-heeled ankle boots. Combined with her tied-up red long curls and striking features, her presence was formidable.
In contrast, Gu Ning, standing next to her, seemed quite unremarkable except for her slightly dazzling golden hair. With her delicate features and student-like sportswear, she looked like a seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl. Although she carried a long knife, most people thought it was just for show. They didn’t believe such a seemingly fragile girl had the guts to kill zombies; she might even scream at the sight of one.
Method, on the other hand, wore a dirty police uniform, his face dusty. But the gun at his waist drew many envious glances. After all, facing those terrifying zombies, using a gun for long-range attacks was completely different from close-range knife fights.
They noticed only three people got out of the car.
A cop and two women.
And such a good car.
This combination, three months into the apocalypse, wasn’t very safe.
But the gun at Method’s waist was enough to make people wary.
Zhuang Chen skillfully climbed onto the car roof, looking into the distance.
Gu Ning checked her watch and said to Method, “I’m going to the restroom.”
Method said, “Should Zhuang Chen go with you? It’s safer with two.”
“Need to?” Zhuang Chen asked Gu Ning.
“No need. I’ll be fine,” Gu Ning gestured with the knife in her hand.
“Alright then. Be careful,” Method said. They had already checked the area when they arrived; no zombies around. Even if something unexpected happened, with Gu Ning’s skills, she should handle it.
“You’re quite confident in her,” Zhuang Chen watched Gu Ning walk away with the knife and said to Method.
“Yeah,” Method replied, thinking to himself, if you saw Gu Ning kill zombies, you’d understand why I’m so confident.
Zhuang Chen looked around and asked, “Hey, Method, what’s your relationship with Gu Ning? Relatives? Friends? Or just temporary partners? How old is she? What did she do before?”
“Are you conducting a census?” Method couldn’t help but roll his eyes.
“What kind of world is this now? A world where killing isn’t a crime. I need to know your backgrounds. Otherwise, if you two plot against me, who would I cry to?” Zhuang Chen said, then suddenly her gaze fixed on a distant spot, “Hey, Method, the car you’re looking for is a yellow minibus, right? Is it Changtong Passenger Transport?”
Method was taken aback, thought for a moment, then said, “Yes. How did you know…” Before he could finish, he suddenly realized and climbed onto the car roof to look in the direction Zhuang Chen was staring.
Sure enough, not five cars away, beside a white van, was parked a yellow minibus with “Changtong Passenger Transport” written on the side.
Method wasn’t sure if it was the same minibus Gu Ning had before. After all, there were many such minibuses in Jinyong City. Although they were now out of Jinyong, it could still be the same one.
Looking towards where Gu Ning had gone, she was already out of sight.
Just as Method was about to get down and head to the minibus, a window on his side opened, and a somewhat familiar woman leaned out, waving at him and shouting, “Method!”
Method’s eyes lit up immediately.
Zhuang Chen raised an eyebrow, “Looks like we found it.”
