One Hundred Eleven: Preparation
In Igewent on a night, at the Gem Theater.
After the charity event ended, the attendees began to disperse one by one. After seeing off all the guests, the theater quickly closed down. At this time, apart from a few staff members cleaning up, there was no one else inside.
At this moment, not far from the theater, Dorothy’s carriage was parked by the roadside. Sitting in the carriage, she manipulated her small zombie puppet to carefully investigate the situation within the theater.
Without a doubt, the theater was led by Bill. This was another outpost of the Holy Communion. After failing to track down Viscount Field, Dorothy returned to the theater, hoping to gather some other useful information here.
Dorothy’s small zombie puppet searched the theater but found nothing significant. It seemed that Bill was not in the theater, and the other staff members did not have anything particularly noteworthy about them.
Just as Dorothy prepared to recall the puppet and leave, she suddenly noticed the wide stage in the empty hall. Looking at the stage, Dorothy couldn’t help but think of something.
‘The song “Lamb Song” sung by those children is a secret transmission, though it has been diluted several times through adaptation, making its effect weak for ordinary people. But… although it’s very weak, it doesn’t mean it’s non-existent. Besides ordinary people, there are other Extraordinary Beings present, especially an Extraordinary Being of “Lamp.” Even if the effect is very weak, they would still feel something amiss. Since they didn’t react…’
Thinking this way, Dorothy began to manipulate the small zombie puppet to crawl towards the stage. Finally, she successfully climbed under the stage with the help of a gecko. Inside, she saw what she had expected.
Under the stage, where ordinary people could not see, on the other side of the stage floor, a large magical array was drawn. The content of the array was complex, most of which Dorothy couldn’t understand, but she could tell its meaning from the spiritual symbols.
At the center of this array under the stage, there was a golden coin with a triangular pattern, which was the symbol of “Stone.” Therefore, this was an array with the significance of “Stone.”
Seeing this scene, Dorothy understood. “Stone” and “Cup” were opposites and could suppress or neutralize each other. Thus, the weak effect of the “Cup” secret transmission was further suppressed by the “Stone” array, making its influence so weak that even an Extraordinary Being of “Lamp” couldn’t detect it.
This method of suppressing the effect by relying on the opposition of spirituality, Dorothy had seen before when Audric used strange glasses, incense, and a “Stone” array to suppress the effect of the “Sacred Body Deconstruction Technique” scroll given to her.
‘Heh, there really is something hidden beneath. This can be utilized; it will be useful when I report tomorrow.
‘Although I don’t know yet why Field did this, since he did it, I’ll have to take the risk.’
Looking at the array under the stage, Dorothy thought, then slowly recalled the small zombie puppets in the theater and began to ponder her strategy for the next day.
‘Sigh… Facing that Black Tier alone is still difficult… I need a helper…’
Rubbing her chin, Dorothy thought, and finally, she thought of the nun she had met just today.
‘It seems like she’s the only one who can provide direct help right now…’
As she thought, Dorothy closed her eyes and pretended to pray inwardly.
‘O great Akka… My investigation is encountering difficulties. I want to seek help from my companions again. I request to directly communicate with the Radiant nun I met earlier, in the form of a letter.’
Having finished her prayer, Dorothy sent the prayer message through the information channel.
…
Inside the Radiant Church of Igewent, Vania, who had just entered her room to prepare for her usual prayer, heard a familiar female voice echoing in her mind once again, causing her some confusion.
‘Again, is this the same girl I encountered in the washroom? What does she want to communicate with me? And in the form of a book-letter… A book-letter means…’
Hearing this voice, Vania immediately unfastened the Sacred Text from her waist, placed it on the table, and started flipping through the pages. Eventually, she discovered some messy new words written on a blank page.
“Hello, Nun.”
‘This, is this written by that girl? So this book can communicate with her, and also serve as a tool for communication among believers… Ah, no! I’m not yet one of her believers; I’m a nun of the Holy Mother, I’ve merely received her grace by chance!’
Vania shook her head and thought, then after some consideration, she picked up a pen and wrote on the book.
“Hello, may I ask if there is anything else you need help with?”
The words Vania wrote gradually faded away, and new ones appeared.
“Are you an Extraordinary Being of ‘Lamp’? Do you have the ability to track from a distance?”
Dorothy asked, knowing that the other party was a nun of the Radiant Church, with a status not too low to attend charity events. Moreover, many moves of the Laurent Swordsmanship she exchanged required the use of ‘Lamp,’ so Dorothy speculated that the other party might be an Extraordinary Being of ‘Lamp,’ but of a lower rank.
Looking at the question that appeared in front of her, Vania frowned slightly and continued writing.
“There is, but I lack some materials. May I ask what you need this ability for?”
Vania’s reply gradually faded away. After waiting for a while, new information appeared.
“To save.”
…
Time passed swiftly, the moon set and the sun rose.
Early morning, on the apartment building along Nanyang Flower Road, Gregor, having just woken up, sat on the sofa with his legs crossed, eating a sausage while flipping through the newspaper he had just taken from the door. The newspaper extensively covered the successful charity event last night.
The door opened, and Dorothy, wearing a white light dress, walked into the living room. She saw Gregor closely examining the newspaper as if looking for something, and couldn’t help but ask curiously.
“Good morning, Gregor. What are you looking at so closely?”
“Good morning, Dorothy. I’m reading yesterday’s charity event coverage to see if any of the photos accidentally captured my sister.”
Turning around, Gregor smiled and said. Dorothy had told him she attended the charity event, and when he first heard it, he felt proud, thinking his sister had achieved something remarkable, being able to attend such a high-class gathering alone at such a young age.
So he went through the photos in the newspaper early in the morning, hoping to find his sister’s image.
“Forget it, the camera quality is so poor; how could I possibly catch me sitting in the audience?” Dorothy shrugged and picked up a glass of milk to drink.
“Haha, I was just checking. By the way, Dorothy, isn’t it your day off today? Why are you up so early?” Gregor continued to ask, and Dorothy responded directly.
“I’m going to the Orphanage of Mercy today to send off a child who was adopted by Viscount Field last night. She was one of my students when I taught as a volunteer teacher at the orphanage,” Dorothy briefly replied. Hearing her words, Gregor couldn’t help but brighten up.
“The Viscount Field’s soon-to-be adopted daughter is actually one of your students. That’s quite a connection… You’re really something, Dorothy. You’ve already started laying the groundwork for future development since arriving in Igewent. You’re much stronger than I am; I spent my first year in Igewent working at that damned factory.”
Gregor laughed, and after finishing her milk, Dorothy rolled her eyes at him and responded.
“You should hurry up and finish breakfast and go to work. It’s already late; I remember you don’t have the day off today, right?”
“Sigh… Yes, yes, yes. These days are so unstable, always having to work overtime…
“But fortunately, today should be the last one. After today, I should be able to rest a bit.”
Sighing, Gregor finished his breakfast, put on his coat, bid farewell to Dorothy, and walked out the door, leaving the apartment building and heading to work.
From the window upstairs, Dorothy watched Gregor disappear down the road, took a bite of the sausage, and slowly said.
“Go… Go… When you get to your new overtime project, I’ll be almost done here.”
