Chapter 1133: The Puppet Master
Lin Nuo suddenly unleashed a powerful Spirit Technique, striking something down from the sky. The curious little girl, Su Kexin, hurriedly leaned in to see what it was.
A pigeon.
Or perhaps it was some stinky author or video creator reincarnated.
“Ah? It’s a pigeon! Senior Martial Brother, what’s special about this pigeon?”
Su Kexin quickly caught the pigeon that had been shot down by Lin Nuo’s technique, which was now finished and out of luck.
“This pigeon was spying on us.”
“Spying? How is that… That’s unbelievable! So, who is the puppet master behind this? Are we in danger?”
Upon hearing the word “spying,” Su Kexin panicked, always imagining the massive conspiracy hiding behind it.
The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became.
“Clearly, after I hit it with my Spirit Technique, it stopped relaying information. As for the source, I can’t be certain yet.”
Lin Nuo took the pigeon from Su Kexin’s hands and muttered to himself.
“What do you mean, Senior Martial Brother… I don’t really understand…”
Su Kexin, completely bewildered, quickly asked for clarification.
“What’s not to understand? This pigeon is a messenger; it can relay what it observes back to whoever is behind it, that’s called information transmission,” Lin Nuo explained.
“But it’s so high up! What can it see? If I fly on a sword and look down, it’d be just like looking at little ants, nothing is clear.”
“That’s you. Others spying can definitely see everything below clearly. Otherwise, how could I have discovered it? It wasn’t targeting us specifically; how could I perceive it? This is inherently a two-way process; it watches us, revealing its intentions.”
“Senior Martial Brother, it’s in the air! How could you be so quick to conclude it’s watching us? Even if it’s looking down, who knows what it’s actually seeing?”
“That’s why you’re still naive! One day, you might not even realize when your home is being watched, thinking you’re hidden well and no one can see you.”
Lin Nuo teased, and Su Kexin shivered in fear. She indeed had some sneaky habits, like having a portrait of Lin Nuo on her pillowcase, cuddling with it every night and often kissing it.
She seemed to be heading in the direction of a lovesick girl, with a glamorous exterior hiding a little-known side.
If these actions of hers were being watched, wouldn’t she be hugely embarrassed?
So scary!
“Well, Senior Martial Brother, does that mean I have no privacy? Everything I do when I’m alone is exposed? Am I being spied on? Even when I’m bathing!”
“… You’re thinking too much. Firstly, someone skilled enough to use this technique wouldn’t bother spying on you in the bath. If they did, it would be purely coincidental, not their goal. Of course, the odds are low. If there’s really someone who has mastered this skill just to spy on a girl bathing, then consider it as if I said nothing. If that’s the case, I might just twist their head off.”
“Right, right! Senior Martial Brother, you must help me find that peeping Tom!” Su Kexin was suddenly filled with righteous indignation, as if she’d suffered a great injustice.
Lin Nuo: “… Don’t sound as if someone has already peeped at you. It’s just a possibility. If someone really used this Spirit Technique for something so petty, I would look down on them, and I might twist their head off. Now, let’s stop this pointless speculation. It discovered us but didn’t send much information back; the moment it locked onto us, I shot it down. After being hit, the technique must have ceased.”
Lin Nuo examined the little pigeon multiple times; it still retained a bit of spiritual energy, but he couldn’t determine where it came from.
He had a few speculations.
First, from the Xuanyun Sect. Second, from Immortals. Third, from the Refining Demon Sect. Fourth, a visitor from the Demon Realm or Sacred Realm.
The other party was quite cautious; upon being detected, it quickly severed the connection, leaving no clues to trace back.
This pigeon wasn’t even plump; even if eaten, there wouldn’t be much meat—definitely not satisfying.
“Senior Martial Brother, what now…?”
“We can’t stay here any longer. Since we haven’t found the Fox People, let’s go. We’ve asked everyone nearby; logically, they can’t have gone far. Even if they were truly captured, with so many Fox People, there should be some traces left. But there aren’t, which is very strange. Perhaps this pigeon witnessed everything. If we can somehow revive its memories, we might find a clue.”
“But, Senior Martial Brother, it’s dead! How can we revive it?”
“So it’s a possibility. Do you prefer it steamed or braised? This pigeon, though small, is intact and can still fill a belly.”
Lin Nuo waved the pigeon in front of Su Kexin, who found Lin Nuo admirable—calm in the face of being spied on, acting as if nothing happened, maintaining an airy demeanor.
“Hmm… Senior Martial Brother, you eat it. Just thinking about this pigeon being here to spy on us makes me lose my appetite. Senior Martial Brother, do you think this pigeon could be connected to those vicious monsters? Maybe it’s one of them, just disguised as a pigeon. You should be extra careful!”
“Are you worried it might open its mouth and eat me? It seems like your mental state hasn’t recovered; you’re constantly obsessed with those monsters. By your logic, flowers and plants could instantly turn into man-eating monsters. The very ground beneath you might conceal a giant python ready to swallow you whole.”
“Ah! Is that… really possible?”
Su Kexin gasped and hurriedly pressed closer to Lin Nuo, clutching at his clothes out of fear.
“Don’t overreact. I was just speaking hypothetically; do you really believe that? If it were true, wouldn’t you be able to sense its aura? Or are you just taking the opportunity to get closer?”
Lin Nuo shook his head, wondering if she was genuinely scared or just pretending. After all, she was the main character; shouldn’t she show some main character qualities?
Suddenly, Lin Nuo felt a pang of disappointment, thinking how he got beaten down by this easily startled Su Kexin.
“Have you seen those vicious monsters again?” Lin Nuo asked.
“A little, but it’s better than before. We should just leave; I feel something’s really off here.”
“Then let’s go. Quit pulling on my clothes; just walk normally, okay?”
Lin Nuo sighed, feeling rueful as she’d already torn his clothes; was she really that scared?
Holding the little pigeon, Lin Nuo was about to leave, but he couldn’t shake off thoughts about the little pigeon—the person behind it, who could they be?
And Su Kexin suddenly recalled a memory from the past, which wasn’t random; perhaps it was clear as day that the Cangshan Forest, the Demon Realm, and herself had some inextricable connection.
“Senior Martial Brother! Senior Martial Brother!”
“What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly yelling?”
Su Kexin shouted all of a sudden, breaking Lin Nuo’s train of thought.
“There! There are Fox People!”
Su Kexin pointed in one direction and shouted. Lin Nuo turned to look, faintly seeing the silhouette of a fox.
How did he not notice that before?
