Chapter 13: The Mother Dragon’s Fury

When faced with another Black Wolf Bird, could Ji Jie win?

Ji Jie knew he couldn’t. He had only transformed into a Black Wolf Bird for a few hours!

He was still a fledgling who had just mastered flying—how could he possibly defeat an experienced overlord?

But he wouldn’t flee outright; this was the best learning opportunity.

Ji Jie moved his throat, feeling a scorching heat surge from his chest and erupt from his mouth, sending a wave of searing flames toward the oncoming black female.

His throat and mouth were in pain, nearly making him lose his breath. First times always hurt, but once you get used to it, it becomes easier.

The other Black Wolf Bird showed disdain in its eyes, seeing no threat in someone unable to even spit out fireballs. How dare such a fledgling provoke it?

Ji Jie watched as the black female effortlessly broke through his thin flame and used the rising air currents to swipe at him with her claws.

Adjusting his wings, Ji Jie spun sideways in mid-air to face the incoming Black Wolf Bird, delivering a powerful tail whip from above.

This wasn’t easy for Ji Jie, who had just learned how to fly, but the upward air current created by the scattered flames helped him maintain balance.

His tail struck the attacker’s claws, failing to disrupt her aerial stability. Instead, she grabbed his tail with her claws.

Now tethered together, their controlled winds clashed, causing imbalance. Their wings collided as they both tumbled downward, flipping in the air.

Ji Jie felt the world spinning wildly around him. To regain control, he retracted his claws and suddenly kicked outward while flapping his wings to stay above.

“Roar!”

But his opponent wasn’t one to be trifled with either. She climbed up his tail with her claws, headbutted him, and rammed her body into his, aiming to upset his balance.

Face-to-face, both Black Wolf Birds pecked at each other with identical beaks, but without proper leverage in the air, neither could break through the other’s defense.

Clearly, the black female excelled more in aerial combat. Within seconds, Ji Jie found himself mostly pinned beneath her.

To be fair, according to Black Wolf Bird standards, this female was quite attractive—strong and capable, though past her breeding season.

But the ground was getting closer. If he didn’t break free soon, he’d end up being smashed onto the ground like a meat cushion.

“Roar!”

A torrent of flames erupted from Ji Jie’s mouth, engulfing the black female.

Unfazed, she continued suppressing him with her wings as they plummeted further until the lukewarm flames exploded right in front of her.

Caught off guard by the close-range explosion, Ji Jie managed to separate them. Falling alone now, he felt the burning heat on his face, which the wind began to cool—a gentle caress that let him better perceive its texture.

The upward rush of wind during descent was fierce; flailing his wings recklessly risked breaking bones, much like an umbrella snapping in a storm.

Wind, like a capricious bride, couldn’t be subdued—so go with it.

Ji Jie dove into the wind, carefully unfurling his wings bit by bit, treating the unpredictable gusts with delicate care.

Satisfied, the wind cooperated, allowing him to succeed.

Just before hitting the tree canopy, Ji Jie flapped his wings and soared back into the sky, victorious in retreat.

Behind him, an enraged roar accompanied the intense heat. Using the ascending air current from the fireball, Ji Jie climbed higher, flying smoother than ever.

Though tactical withdrawal marked the end of the battle, its outcome exceeded his expectations.

Black Wolf Birds learn techniques by observing others, but Ji Jie, as a seasoned player in his previous life, only needed imagination. His instincts gave him confidence to handle complex situations—he merely lacked experience.

As the wind brushed against his body, the pain in his mouth became negligible.

The black female had long ceased chasing him. This aerial dogfight ended with his victory (retreat), forcing the bird dragon species to land due to fatigue.

Still within her territory, if she came back after his rest, Ji Jie would gain some land combat experience.

As for food? After resting, Ji Jie spotted a line of small dots in the sky—a group of Flying Pterosaurs.

Climbing a sturdy tree, Ji Jie leaped off with force, scattering the Flying Pterosaurs’ formation, catching two with his claws.

Dropping the two already dead Flying Pterosaurs on the ground, Ji Jie lazily pecked at them while contemplating his next move.

Let’s organize the information:

No hunters have been found in the New Continent yet. The game’s Starlight Base is located near the coast of the Ancient Tree Forest in the New Continent, but despite various investigations in different forms, he hasn’t discovered them.

It seems hunters haven’t reached this land, which is good news for him.

But without hunters, Ji Jie felt lost without a main storyline.

What’s the main plot?

The Míng Dēng Lóng calling for the ancient dragons, the Tian Huang Ground Crying Dragon causing seismic changes, and that nightmare-inducing Black Dragon…

Why seek them out?

Ji Jie wanted to truly witness those sights—if given the chance to surpass them, it would be even better.

But relying solely on individual strength to find them seemed hopeless. In his past life, humans rose to the top through societal collaboration; people in this world also relied on teamwork to maintain habitable environments.

Ji Jie never believed individual power could surpass collective strength, even with his ability to switch forms.

Even choosing freedom and not joining a group, subtly leveraging collective power isn’t wrong.

Thinking about these things feels too distant now—first, he must grow stronger.

Should he establish dominance or explore the entire New Continent?

This question had an answer since his days as a Hairy Spider—he’s always been mapping the area consciously.

Looking back from the hill, Ji Jie realized the Thief Dragon society had slipped from his mind.

Let’s become stronger.

Who’s the strongest in the Ancient Tree Forest?

Of course, it’s the Sky’s Ruler, the Fire Dragon!
