Chapter 131: Ji Jiuzhe in the Apocalypse

When Gu Ning saw the little girl in the white dress, her nerves instantly tightened. Those cold gray eyes stared at her, as if trying to drag her back into the abyss.

The moment their eyes met, Gu Ning felt herself being pulled into a vortex, unable to break free. Her gaze shifted from intense struggle to a calm, vacant stare—suddenly, the soul-sucking vortex vanished! The moment Gu Ning regained consciousness, she quickly closed her eyes, ducked behind the balcony, and blocked her view. Gradually, clarity returned, but her heart still raced with lingering fear.

Meanwhile, on the lookout tower, Xiang Xu, after using all his strength to sever the mutated zombie’s control over Gu Ning, was immediately hit by a mental attack from the zombie. His face turned pale, and his head buzzed with a deafening roar—

Gu Ning had no time to ponder what had just happened. She swiftly took the sniper rifle off her back, took a deep breath, and stood up abruptly, aiming the rifle at the spot where the zombie girl had been standing. The little zombie girl remained motionless, seemingly oblivious to the impending danger.

Without hesitation, Gu Ning pulled the trigger. However, as the gunshot rang out, a flash of light crossed her mind, and a vague thought emerged, causing her heart to race. She couldn’t quite grasp what it was, but when she saw the bullet suspended in mid-air just centimeters from the zombie girl’s forehead, as if caught by an invisible hand, and the zombies slowly turning their heads toward her, she finally understood why her heart had been pounding.

In an instant, Gu Ning felt as if she had been doused with a bucket of icy water, chilling her to the bone.

“Gu Ning! What’s wrong?!” Third Brother, startled by the gunshot, rushed out of the room and saw the zombies that had been lingering behind the earth wall now surging toward them. He was horrified.

“Go!” Gu Ning didn’t have time to explain. She grabbed Third Brother’s hand and ran back into the room.

They dashed into the hallway, where zombies were already flooding up from the first floor to the second. Gu Ning and Third Brother ran into the opposite room, locked the door, and Gu Ning slung the rifle back over her shoulder, sheathed her knife, and climbed onto the windowsill. She leaped down, bending her knees to absorb most of the impact, then waited for Third Brother to jump.

As Third Brother landed, the door was smashed open by the zombies, who poured into the room, crowding the windowsill and howling, waving their arms at them.

Some zombies had already swarmed onto the flat roof. Third Brother and Gu Ning moved to the edge, where Third Brother grabbed the pre-arranged vines and began climbing toward another building. Just as Gu Ning reached for the vines, an evolved zombie suddenly climbed up and lunged at her without hesitation!

Gu Ning quickly drew her knife and slashed at the zombie’s neck, sending its head flying. The body stumbled forward a few steps before collapsing.

Gu Ning glanced at the other evolved zombies climbing up from below and said to Third Brother, who had paused, “Third Brother, go join Cheng Ming and the others. Find a way back to the base! I can handle this on my own!” With that, she charged at the evolved zombie with her knife.

Third Brother, realizing his special abilities were nearly depleted and that he would only be a burden, decided to trust Gu Ning. He knew she wouldn’t say she could handle it if she wasn’t sure. Gritting his teeth, he began climbing toward the other building as the zombies were distracted by Gu Ning.

Gu Ning swung her knife with both hands, cutting down two evolved zombies, then plunged her knife into their heads. Brain matter splattered, and she dodged to avoid it. Standing up, she coldly watched another mutated zombie climbing up from the other side. This one, covered in slime and with a tail that could cause instant paralysis, was the same type they had encountered at the hospital. Zhang Xiaobai had called it a “crawler zombie.”

It didn’t attack immediately but instead prowled along the edge of the roof, its slime leaving wet trails on the ground. Its hooked tail swayed, the sharp tip glinting coldly.

Gu Ning didn’t attack either, keeping a wary eye on the crawler zombie. She was buying time, sensing that these zombies were all controlled by the little zombie girl and were targeting her. She needed to keep them occupied so Third Brother and the others could escape back to the base. Once they were safe, she could retreat into her space, knowing the zombies wouldn’t stay here forever.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Third Brother climb through the window into the room, and she felt a slight relief. She refocused on the crawler zombie. By now, the roof below was packed with layers of zombies, howling excitedly, giving Gu Ning the absurd feeling that she and the crawler were like boxers in a ring, with the zombies as the roaring audience.

The dark sky was pitch black, without a single glimmer of light. Gu Ning cautiously followed the crawler’s slimy trail along the roof’s edge. One misstep, and she would fall into the zombie horde below, torn to pieces. Her feet lifted from the slime, leaving behind thin, transparent strands. After nearly a minute of standoff, the crawler finally attacked, darting toward Gu Ning like a fish through water!

Gu Ning’s eyes showed no fear, only cold sharpness. She tightened her grip on the knife and, as the crawler charged, leaped toward the adjacent building. She ran up the wall, flipped in mid-air, and landed behind the mutated zombie. Without hesitation, she swung her knife at the crawler’s tail. The combination of her enhanced strength and the sharp blade sliced through the tail with a hiss!

A shrill scream echoed!

The crawler turned sharply, lunging at Gu Ning with its remaining half-tail still twitching. Gu Ning swung her knife again, severing the zombie’s neck, then kicked the body and head down into the zombie horde below, where they were instantly swallowed.

Gu Ning scanned her surroundings, sensing the little zombie girl watching coldly from somewhere. “She” was undoubtedly enjoying this “performance.” From the moment Gu Ning had discovered this mutated zombie, she had been targeted. She even suspected the little zombie was toying with her, as “she” could have sent all the evolved and mutated zombies at once. But “she” hadn’t. To “her,” this was just a game. Gu Ning felt no fear, only a cold, killing intent. She spoke into the darkness, “You can’t kill me, but I will kill you.”

The only response was the howls of the zombies and the sound of more evolved zombies climbing up from below.

“It was Gu Ning who fired the shot,” Zhuang Chen said, lowering her binoculars and turning to Yi Shaoqing. She had watched the earth wall rise, feeling relieved, but then, for some reason, Gu Ning had fired into the zombie horde. Knowing Gu Ning, she wouldn’t have fired unless it was absolutely necessary. Sure enough, the gunshot had drawn a massive wave of zombies toward them.

“Don’t worry. Even if Gu Ning is alone, I believe she can fight her way back,” Yi Shaoqing said, though he was also nervous. For some reason, he had an unshakable trust in Gu Ning, believing she would be the one to survive.

Zhuang Chen wasn’t reassured. “Gu Ning’s shot drew all the zombies over. She must have known the consequences, but she fired anyway. There must have been a reason. And I only saw her and Third Brother—no sign of Method or the others…”

Forty minutes had passed, and by now, the last team, including Zhang Ji, had returned. Only the Three-Linked Team was still out.

Zhang Xiaobai and Zhong Xu, who had also heard the gunshot, retreated from the gate and said to Zhuang Chen, “We’ll go support them.”

“No,” Zhuang Chen refused firmly. “The terrain over there is complicated, with many paths. If you go and miss them, we’d have to send another team to rescue you.”

Zhang Xiaobai had no retort but was frantic. “Then what do we do?!” The rest of the Three-Linked Team looked equally anxious.

“Look! A plane!” someone suddenly shouted, pointing excitedly at the distant sky.

Everyone turned to look. A black dot was approaching from the horizon, the sound of its propellers growing louder.

“It’s coming from the direction of the Capital. Could it be a rescue plane for you?” Director Zhong asked Zhuang Chen and Yi Shaoqing.

“It can’t be…” Zhuang Chen and Yi Shaoqing exchanged glances, both seeing excitement in each other’s eyes.

The helicopter slowly descended onto the square, its loud roar agitating the zombies outside. But when Zhuang Chen and Yi Shaoqing saw the bright five-star emblem on the aircraft, they were overjoyed and immediately ran toward it.

The others watched curiously, guessing that the newcomers must be acquaintances of Zhuang Chen and Yi Shaoqing.

When a tall, military-clad figure stepped out of the helicopter, Zhuang Chen couldn’t contain her excitement and screamed, “Captain!” Yi Shaoqing, equally thrilled, walked up and punched the man’s chest, saying, “Last night, I thought I’d never see you again!”

The man’s icy expression softened slightly at the sight of Zhuang Chen and Yi Shaoqing, unharmed and full of energy, but it quickly turned stern again. He looked at the zombies crashing against the gate and asked coldly, “Who’s in charge here?”

The man who had stepped out of the helicopter was none other than Ji Jiuzhe, the captain of the First Squad of the Five-Star Brigade!
