<Chapter 1311> 1311. The Plum Swordmaster Reborn Into the Count’s Family
The endless undead pouring forth was nothing short of spectacular. Even if they were merely low-tier undead like skeletons and zombies, just looking at them made it seem like the end of the world had arrived.
“…This isn’t good.”
Melissa muttered with a serious expression.
“Not good? They’re just low-tier undead—skeletons and zombies. We can wipe them out all at once. If anything, we could use bombs.”
Skeletons and zombies are nothing more than moving bones and corpses. Despite their horrifying visuals, they aren’t that strong.
“It might be easy for you, Master. But what about others? For nobles and servants who aren’t combat specialists, they’re terrifying. And there’s too many of them. It’ll be hard for soldiers to handle this.”
“The knights will step up. We’re not the only ones here, right?”
At my words, Melissa nodded.
“The knights from the Argent Dukedom are strong. For now, we have no choice but to trust them.”
We sprinted down the hallway again. Whenever we found a door, we opened it and checked inside. We also encountered quite a few living people.
“Miss!”
We discovered three hiding servants. They were trembling in a small room like a storage closet. As soon as they saw Melissa, their faces lit up.
“We’ve been hiding here… Should we go to the first floor? There’s nothing good about staying here alone.”
“H-But…”
The servants glanced outside the window. From the black hole in the sky, skeletons and zombies were still pouring down.
“It looks dangerous, I know. With countless undead appearing, it’s scary. But this is exactly when we need to stick together. When you go down to the first floor, you’ll find knights and soldiers fighting the undead. Help them.”
“But… we don’t have anything we can do…!”
“Is that so? Then you can either tremble here until an invading undead kills you. Surely you don’t think this place will stay safe forever, do you?”
The servants exchanged glances before speaking to Melissa.
“Miss, could you please come down to the first floor with us…?”
“Sorry, but I need to resolve this situation. We can’t keep enduring forever, can we? The way to the first floor is still safe for now. Go.”
“Yes, yes! Understood!”
The servants ran toward the first floor.
I frowned as I watched them leave.
“Arrogant bastards. Don’t they know their place? You’re also being too kind to the servants.”
“Maybe I’m imitating you, Master? Don’t you treat your maids kindly too?”
“Maids and servants are different.”
“Well, don’t get too mad. Even if it’s just for a moment, since I’ve decided to become the head of the Argent family, they’re people I need to take care of.”
We moved again to search for the Demon Contractor.
We found a body torn apart limb from limb. The chunks of flesh wriggled and gathered together, pulsing like a living thing.
“Creating undead, huh? Disgusting.”
Melissa clicked her tongue and cast a spell. Flames erupted…
The corpse was burned.
KWAHAAAAAAAAANG!
A deafening sound echoed. I and Mellisa glanced out the window. One of the annexes had exploded entirely. Debris fell, and from within that wreckage, black flames surged upward.
Standing atop the ruins, clad in a black robe, was a necromancer with an air of confidence.
“…There’s another master over there. When did they get there?”
“This is the worst.”
I muttered under my breath as I looked at the man clutched in the necromancer’s hand. He appeared to be a nobleman. His limbs were severed, and hundreds of black maggots squirmed across his torso, feasting on his flesh. The man screamed in agony, unable to endure the pain.
“There’s a magic circle on his side—evidence of a demonic contract.”
“That guy won’t kill someone with a demon contract. He’ll keep them alive using dark magic until he achieves his purpose.”
“Looks like our only remaining option is to fight head-on…”
The necromancer turned his head and locked eyes directly on me. With an expressionless face, he summoned undead from the ruins and directed them toward the lily garden.
“Seems like he’s not planning to fight right now. Maybe he’s preparing something?”
“Time isn’t on our side. Undead have been pouring out nonstop since earlier… and the key to resolving this situation has been captured by him.”
“Master. Looks like we need to team up. If Dad, the Aura Master, helps us, it could make a big difference.”
We have three master-level powers. This much strength could easily wipe out an average city. But for some reason, I can’t shake the feeling that defeating the necromancer will be impossible.
“Master, let’s head downstairs to the first floor. Father will probably come down too. He might already be directing people there.”
Following Melissa’s suggestion, we descended to the first floor. In the lobby, soldiers, knights, nobles, and servants—all living beings—were gathered.
As Melissa guessed, Lord Argen was commanding them.
Judging by the exhausted soldiers and knights and the bodies scattered everywhere, it seems they’ve already fought a battle. They’re currently in a brief lull.
“Lord Prucos and Melissa, do you know anything about the current situation?”
Lord Argen stared straight at me and asked. It’s because of the necromancer. That guy looks so much like me—except for skin tone and eye color—that we could pass as twins.
“Father, allow me to explain. This is the work of demons. King Doolibard is likely behind all this.”
“I’ve heard rumors that the king has conspired with demon contractors, but I refused to believe them. So those rumors are true, then?”
Lord Argen gazed out the window.
“I tried sending the knights outside, but an invisible barrier surrounds the mansion, blocking them.”
“The mansion has been transformed into a labyrinth by the power of the Demon of Mirrors, Viruviru. The situation will resolve if we kill either the demon or its contractors. The problem is finding the hidden demon—it’s almost impossible—and the contractor is being held by the necromancer.”
“So we have no choice but to fight the necromancer. Who exactly is this necromancer?”
This time, I stepped forward.
“A parallel-world version of me. Ah, do you know what a parallel world is?”
“I’ve heard about that theory from a mage once.”
“The Demon of Mirrors, Viruviru, manifested a parallel-world version of me.”
“Manifested? You mean it didn’t summon someone from the parallel world?”
“There is no parallel world in *this* world.”
I stated confidently. That’s how it went in the original story.
“…Then why are you calling the necromancer a being from a parallel world?”
“Because Viruviru used the possibility of a parallel world to create the necromancer. The necromancer is a perfect fake. Every aspect of its existence, down to its very origin, is fake. Ha—”
“…Is such a thing even possible?”
“It’s possible, so stop whining. The power of demons surpasses all norms. Don’t judge it with human common sense.”
“How many demons are in league with King Dullbird? If one demon is this powerful… the rebellion will end in Failure.”
“A demon with this level of power isn’t common. There aren’t many remaining demons as dangerous as this. We’ve prepared our trump card. Leave the demons to us. House Argen should focus solely on the rebellion.”
Our trump card was Yuria. As long as Yuria is here, there’s no way we’ll lose.
“Understood. So what now?”
“The only way for us to break out is to defeat the Necromancer. He knows this too, which is why he’s acting so calm.”
I explained the Strategy.
The knights and soldiers will handle the grunts and undead. Melissa, Lord Argen, and I will directly attack the Necromancer.
“Understood.”
Lord Argen nodded without a word.
“Father! Please take me along!!”
Verdo Argen, Lord Argen’s son, suddenly burst out. His eyes gleamed fiercely beneath his armor. It was clear he felt competitive toward Melissa.
“No.”
Lord Argen cut him off sharply.
“That Necromancer is strong. Beyond any standard. We won’t have the luxury to protect you.”
“I promise I won’t hold you back! I am the heir of House Argen! Give me the chance to eliminate the enemy!”
“The heir is Melissa. Once this is over, she will inherit the title. And Verdo… you’re still weak. Stay with the knights and hold back the undead.”
“Father! I can fight too!!”
“Anyone can fight. Learn to distinguish courage from recklessness. Don’t overestimate your abilities.”
“Father…!”
“It’s an order, Verdo.”
“Grrr….”
Verdo gritted his teeth. His finger pointed at Melissa.
“Why her?! Why can she go but not me?!”
“Melissa is strong. Recognizing strength is itself a form of power. In that sense, you continue to disappoint me.”
Lord Argen’s heavy sigh left Verdo flustered. He frantically looked around. The retainers and knights ignored his gaze knowingly. The situation was far too urgent to argue with Lord Argen right now.
Verdo alone seemed oblivious to the gravity of the moment.
“…I will obey Father’s orders.”
Verdo eventually bowed his head.
Before moving, Lord Argen summoned the knight captain, Harmel.
“Harmel. Take care of Verdo.”
“I’ll ensure his safety, my lord.”
As we prepared for battle, we inspected our equipment. While I was ready, Lord Argen and Melissa were different. The father and daughter meticulously checked their gear.
“Melissa.”
“Yes, Father.”
“Don’t hate Verdo too much. He’s still young. He hasn’t even undergone his coming-of-age ceremony.”
“There’s no need to worry. I don’t resent Verdo. In fact, I feel nothing but guilt toward him.”
Melissa glanced at me.
It was a signal to stay out of it. Though I had intended to teach that arrogant brat a lesson, I decided to let it slide for Melissa’s sake.
“Do you remember when Verdo was younger? He followed you well. He liked you more than me.”
“…Yes. I left without a word, abandoning such a devoted Verdo. It wouldn’t be strange if he resented me. But I don’t regret it. Father, there’s no need to worry about Verdo. After this is over, I will leave the Argen family.”
“Melissa. Your roots are in Argen. Never forget that fact.”
“I will never forget it, not even on the day I die.”
