Chapter 14

“Uuuuuh….”

The moment I got home, I practically collapsed.

I had韩결’s language theory class, and then the next class after that.

Then I spent some time with 조민혁 and 허지훈 who came looking for me after hearing the news.

Apparently, the rumors have spread around the entire department. It’s no surprise, really.

It’s probably spread through the whole university by now.

I wouldn’t be surprised if journalists came to Korea University soon to interview me.

The fact that I used to be male has also been revealed, but that didn’t bother me much. The mutation itself was already the hot topic, so gender was just a minor detail.

“Why do you look like a zombie?”

My younger sibling, who had come home earlier, asked me.

“Doing my best to act social killed me.”

“Ah, so everyone knows about you already? I heard rumors about it in our department too.”

“Has it already spread to the business school?”

“Yeah. There’s a rumor about a dragon-type mutant in the literature department! Things like that. The rumors started in the humanities college and then spread to the university community boards. Here, take a look.”

“Ugh… You’re right.”

“But why all this socializing? I thought you didn’t have many friends in your department?”

“I went to the department office for the first time in ages to meet those few people.”

“Sounds like the world is ending!”

“Also, remember when I mentioned saving someone from a minotaur-type mutant?”

“Yeah?”

“She was one of my juniors.”

“What?”

“So, we met today and got to know each other better.”

“Is she male or female?”

“Female. Literature is a female-dominated department; there are maybe five to six male juniors at most, right?”

“Ahh, that’s right.”

“Anyway, while getting closer to her, I happened to meet some classmates in a shared lecture. Then I went to the department office with them, and when I casually mentioned that I’m a mutant… other juniors started to gather around.”

“Looks like you’re the ultimate socialite now.”

“That’s what I’m saying. The reaction was completely different from when I entered the department office as a man.”

“True, your face used to look pretty fierce back then. The idea of people approaching you with that neutral expression on your harsh face is itself strange.”

“Don’t hit me so hard with that. Anyway… I definitely realized something today: I’m not cut out for being a social butterfly.”

“Why? Aren’t you speaking just fine?”

“I’m mentally exhausted. I don’t know what to say, and even if I do, I can’t stop monitoring the reactions around me. I felt like I was dying from fatigue. Being around people feels like my energy is being drained. It’s even worse when they’re not close friends.”

“Yes, yes, I know how you feel.”

“Let alone, during the orientation, the juniors will probably swarm me with questions… that’s troubling. Maybe I should’ve just stayed in my room?”

“Or you could just drink and put on a fire show?”

“Are you crazy? Would I ever do something like that?”

“Who knows? You might if you get caught up in the atmosphere. To me, you’re on your way to becoming the star of the literature department.”

“I don’t want to be that.”

“The benevolent dragon body may be impressive, but your loner attitude seems intact.”

“That’s right. I do feel like I’ve gained a bit more confidence in my actions recently, but it seems my fundamental nature hasn’t changed. Still, I prefer solitude.”

“Hmm, fair enough. Ah, by the way.”

“What?”

“Come visit the business school sometime.”

“No way.”

“Ha, yeah, probably not.”

“Ah, I don’t know. I think I won’t be going to the department office for a while.”

“Will that be easy? People will stick their necks out just to see you out of curiosity.”

“Guess so.”

“Since you’ve decided to come out as a mutant, you’ll just have to deal with it. Ugh.”

I once again start to wonder about people who gain energy by interacting with others.

What is it about their physical and mental structure that makes them so different?

I feel so drained, to the point where I don’t even want to do anything.

I don’t know. For now, I’ll sleep a bit and think about it when I wake up.

My decision to reveal myself was based on a simple idea:

If a dragon-type mutant like me could gain people’s attention and approach them kindly, maybe it would improve the perception of mutants.

The method itself may not be bad.

The issue is that I’m someone who feels extremely fatigued when interacting with others.

When I woke up, I saw my younger sister fiddling with her smartphone.

“Ah, you’re awake?”

Apparently noticing my presence, she spoke while still looking at her phone.

“Yeah.”

“Did you feel a bit more rested?”

“Somewhat? I’m still tired. Ugh, this is mentally painful.”

“By the way, why does sis want to graduate from college?”

“Because the tuition feels wasted.”

“No, no. That’s not what I meant. Nowadays, sis could make plenty of money doing anything, right?”

“…True.”

Frankly, I could rake in money if I wanted to.

I can manipulate the weather, so I could contract with the government to prevent forest fires and disasters for a fee.

Even in Seoul, countless places flood due to summer downpours.

If I were offered a suitable reward, I could prevent many property damages caused by heavy rains—a win-win for both parties.

Or, if I needed cash fast, I could hunt down wanted mutants and claim all their bounties.

But I don’t… and that’s because of a trivial reason.

The title of “Korea University student” represents something I achieved through sheer hard work during my ordinary days.

I can confidently say I worked harder than most people.

Even from when I was a teenager with a set mindset, I pushed myself despite my average intelligence, without my parents pushing me to study.

Others might see it as insignificant.

Ultimately, going to a prestigious school serves to help secure a job, but as a mutant, I don’t need to put in that effort to make money.

However, because of that, what I achieved as an ordinary person is even more precious.

Even leisurely joke-sharing times with classmates now hold value.

Those moments were built by 윤서현, the intimidating man I once was.

Thus, they are important.

This is why I place great importance on such moments.

“Because… it’s proof of the efforts of the me before I mutated. It seems wasteful. As you said, I could earn money anytime. But everyone has different values, right? I’m not exactly in need of money presently.”

“Hmm, I see.”

“Anyway, there’s a reason I keep worrying about tuition and university. I’m not living carefree like you.”

“You’re attacking me again. Why are you criticizing me? I live thoughtfully too?”

“Alright, alright. So, dinner?”

“Not yet. I thought we’d eat once you woke up. What do you want?”

“Hmm… something light would be good, not heavy. How about udon?”

“Delivery?”

“Yeah. I don’t feel like going out anymore. That’s enough outdoor activity for today.”

“Phew…”

“Why?”

While slurping my udon, I couldn’t help but chuckle dryly.

“People’s gossip really spreads fast. It seems the articles I saw on the university community boards have already made it to the newspapers.”

“What were they saying?”

“A dragon-type mutant appears at Korea University… the mutant who subdued the minotaur mutant… roughly that kind of article has surfaced. They even mentioned that I’m a Korea University student and detailed the fact that I’m a literature student.”

“Are the reporters camped outside the literature department already? Since mutants are getting so much attention, and sis was one of the last to mutate but as a dragon…”

“That’s true.”

Suddenly, my vision blurred. Should I have been more cautious?

No, in this situation, there’s only one way forward.

“I should secure an interview with a credible newspaper this time. I came out to help other mutants live safer lives, so a bit of fatigue is okay.”

“Going full-blown journalist mode?”

“To be honest, I might get taken advantage of. Some might twist words and write strange articles. Isn’t that how clickbait journalists operate?”

“Nah. If they try to exploit me, I’ll just retaliate. Let them know not to mess with me. If necessary, I’ll ask the national intelligence agent I mentioned earlier for help. I’m not that stupid.”

“Yeah, handle it well. But try not to use physical force too much.”

“Of course. But a bit of intimidation should be fine, right?”

“If you intimidate, sis, could you… maybe throw down a lightning bolt?”

“How about showing them a house-sized fireball instead? It’ll make them realize they’re dealing with someone beyond their reach and back off. Alternatively, I could transform into a dragon?”

“What’s with the sudden dragon transformation?”

“I am, after all, a dragon-type mutant. I naturally can assume the form of a dragon.”

“…Is that a fact you’ve kept to yourself until now?”

“It came to me yesterday.”

“Wow. Hmm, how big are you when you transform into a dragon?”

“Well, when I’m in dragon form, my wings alone are about 4 meters. I guess the whole thing could be even bigger? I hope I never have to transform, though.”

“Please, let’s just hope the journalists don’t bother sis too much. You know, you’re the type to cause trouble once you lose your temper. I still remember how you got a few hundred million won in settlement money, don’t I?”

“Haha… I’ll try not to let that happen. But if they provoke me that much, isn’t it their fault?”

“Exactly, totally.”
