Chapter 141: Probing
Why would a ghost appear in the property originally belonging to Viscount Field and now assigned to Anna?
Dorothy began to ponder this question. She thought that perhaps the ghost was already present in the house, or it might have come from outside.
Upon careful analysis, Dorothy felt that the possibility of the ghost being originally in the house was not very high. Before this, she had just discussed the matter of the house with some lawyers. The houses on Knight Road were all excellent properties, including number 26, which was also owned by Viscount Field. He had bought several of the best plots right after they were built and mostly rented them out. The rental income had long since covered the costs, making it a successful investment.
The area was very pleasant, and there had never been any reports of ghosts or murders. The land had never been a cemetery, which made it easy to rent. It was hard to imagine such a house having a ghost.
Then, if the ghost was an outsider… why would it specifically float here? And judging from its appearance, it seemed to be observing everywhere. Was this typical behavior for a ghost, or was there another reason?
‘This act of checking around feels like… reconnaissance?’
Dorothy thought to herself. As someone who had used small zombie puppets for infiltration and reconnaissance multiple times, she naturally thought in this direction.
‘If there is an Extraordinary Being with ‘Silence’ or something related to ‘Silence’ who can manipulate ghosts, then it’s entirely possible to use the ghost for reconnaissance, just as I do with my puppets…
‘If that’s really the case, then things could get quite serious… This means there may currently be an Extraordinary Being investigating this house!’
Thinking about this possibility, Dorothy couldn’t help but feel a chill. Although she didn’t understand why an Extraordinary Being would suddenly focus on this place, if it was indeed the case, the situation would be extremely urgent.
Observing the ghost drifting around the room, Dorothy considered whether she should warn the surrounding Hunters without exposing her own special abilities, but she couldn’t think of a way to do so without revealing herself.
Finally, it seemed that the ghost had finished its observations inside the house and drifted through the window outside, seemingly confirming Dorothy’s suspicion that the ghost was from outside.
Watching the departing ghost, Dorothy momentarily considered releasing a small zombie puppet to track it, but then realized that her Spiritual Vision, granted by the Identification Technique, only worked on herself. Since the Identification Technique was her personal skill and couldn’t be transferred to the puppet, the puppet couldn’t observe spirits, and therefore couldn’t see or track the ghost.
‘It seems… I didn’t gain any advantage in reconnaissance and intelligence this time…’
Looking at the ghost leaving through the wall, Dorothy silently thought to herself.
‘It looks like I need to pay more attention to this area…’
…
After leaving number 26, the ghost continued its investigation around the area, probing other houses near number 26, the carriages on Knight Road, and once everything seemed thoroughly investigated, it quickly floated back towards the direction it came from. Soon, it drifted to the end of Knight Road and reached Godfrey, who was waiting with his hands behind his back.
The emaciated figure of the ghost leaned close to Godfrey’s ear and whispered something inaudible. After listening, Godfrey nodded thoughtfully.
“Hmph… That brat indeed has issues. He even has a black dog protecting him… Interesting…” Godfrey muttered. By ‘black dog,’ he meant the Hunters, dressed in black uniforms and serving as dogs of the authorities.
The ghost had just discovered hidden standard weapons on the plainclothes Hunters, which sufficiently indicated their identities.
‘Although the presence of black dogs indicates that the brat has secrets and possibly some backing, it doesn’t confirm whether this backing is our target. After all, no traces of ‘Stone’ have been found… Those black dogs might be guarding the area because they noticed something unusual about the brat.’
Godfrey continued to ponder. Although he confirmed that Anna had something abnormal, he wasn’t sure what it was or if it was the target they were looking for.
“Looks like we can probe a bit tonight and see what we can uncover…”
As he spoke, Godfrey glanced at another house on Knight Road. His ghost had conducted a rough investigation of the other houses after finishing with number 26 and had discovered something interesting in the house numbered 38.
“After all… We’ve prepared all the pieces. Not trying it out would be a waste.”
Looking at the window of number 38, Godfrey said with a smile.
…
In the spacious living room of house number 38 on Knight Road, on the second floor, several men were sitting around a table, pointing and discussing the distant house number 26 through the window.
All these men were dressed properly and wore hats. Among them, one man was short and stout, with a round belly and thick jowls. This was Gary Field’s distant cousin, Harude.
At this moment, the men around Harude were arguing fiercely, each with an unyielding fire in their eyes.
“Therefore, after success, all properties on Knight Road should belong to me.”
“Bullshit! What qualifications do you have to claim Knight Road? In terms of bloodline, I am closer to Viscount Field!”
“Hmph… Talk about bloodline? You don’t even qualify to compare with me when it comes to bloodline…”
…
The men at the table kept bickering. Seeing this, Harude impatiently coughed twice and knocked on the table to quiet everyone down before speaking loudly.
“Alright, gentlemen, let’s stop arguing. Let’s not talk about how the inheritance will be divided after the operation succeeds. First, let’s complete our current mission. As long as that brat is still alive, anything else we discuss is meaningless!”
As he spoke, Harude looked out the window at the distant house number 26, then turned to the other men in the carriage.
“The time is set for tonight. Everyone gather your hired hands and take care of that brat all at once. Afterward, regarding the division of the inheritance, those who need to attend banquets should go to banquets, and those who need to go to court should go to court. No objections?”
Hearing Harude’s words, the other men exchanged glances silently, then replied in unison.
“No.”
…
At dusk, the sunset illuminated Knight Road. The visitation gathering that had lasted all afternoon finally ended. At the door of house number 26, Anna waved goodbye to everyone who came to visit her.
“Goodbye~ Mr. Meyshos, I’ll see you next time!”
“Yes, of course, goodbye Anna.”
Dorothy smiled and bid farewell to her student, then walked home. Seeing this, Gregor in another building let out a sigh of relief.
“Whew… Finally back. But I really envy her. She gets to go home now, while I still have to guard here for the night. Sigh…” Gregor shrugged helplessly.
On the other side, Dorothy, walking under the sunset, turned to look back at Knight Road and murmured softly.
“It looks like I’ll have to work a bit extra tonight.”
