<Chapter 1450> 1450. Dark Moon
The water spear thrown by Yenin didn’t reach Philip’s body. A blue barrier was protecting him, so the spear evaporated upon contact.
Zzzziiiiip.
Electric current ran through the barrier.
“I thought he added a lightning attribute to his barrier… but on closer inspection, it’s not magic.”
I recalled the information Rose gave me beforehand.
Jupiterline.
Until the 5th generation, the Jupiterline family was one of the distinguished noble families in Neo London. They were especially renowned for their psychic abilities – mainly telekinesis, lightning manipulation, and telepathy. However, these hereditary powers started disappearing from the 5th generation onwards. The family gradually declined and lost their noble title about 100 years ago.
“The reason behind this remains unclear… probably due to bloodline dilution.”
Maintaining pure bloodlines is difficult. Powers tend to weaken over generations. I considered the possibility of latent inheritance… but there was no record of Philip Jupiterline awakening any psychic abilities through latent inheritance.
“Either he was hiding his powers or he recently awakened them. Given the circumstances, I’d say the latter. This lab must be related.”
While the lab resembles a magician’s workshop, Philip is actually a psychic, not a magician. What’s the purpose of this place? My curiosity as a magician was piqued.
“Hey, if you’re going to stand there, how about lending a hand?”
Invisible Blade spoke to me while continuously dodging lightning bolts. Her ample bosom swayed with each movement – though her cyber suit concealed her nipples, the curves were unmistakable.
“No, now isn’t the time for that.”
I cast three support spells on her:
[Strength]
[Haste]
[Iron Body]
These were the same spells I used on Monts. They would benefit her combat style. However, the spells failed to take effect and dissipated.
“Huh? Did you just try to cast support spells?”
“…Did you intentionally block them?”
“Sorry, my suit has special properties. It repels curse-based magic quite effectively, but unfortunately, it also blocks blessings.”
So this suit wasn’t just designed for lewdness. There seemed to be other functions too, though I decided not to inquire further since she probably wouldn’t share the details.
“Just give me a moment.”
Her words drew my attention. She gripped her ninjato sword in reverse and traced something on the floor with it, while forming seals with her other hand. When she finished, a pillar of water surged up, blocking the incoming lightning.
“Just a moment is all I need. If you can deal with that barrier, I’ll handle the rest.”
“Let’s see what I can do.”
I stepped forward, drawing Philip’s gaze.
“Magician, stay out of this and leave.”
“Do you really think I’d come here without a reason? I already killed your brother. And yet…”
I couldn’t finish my sentence because Philip swung his arm, releasing a bolt of lightning.
[Lightning Spear]
I chanted the prepared spell and launched my own lightning spear. The two lightning attacks collided mid-air. I hoped they’d cancel each other out, but instead, his lightning absorbed mine, grew stronger, and struck against my protective barriers.
Three barriers shattered instantly.
“Heh. Lightning element, huh? What an annoying opponent.”
“Magic doesn’t work on me.”
“The unlucky one you’re referring to is probably your younger brother who just got defeated, huh?”
The face of the guy mocking me suddenly stiffens.
“…I will avenge my younger brother. I’ll capture you and slowly collapse you starting from a single cell.”
It was the moment Phillip was about to spread his hands towards me. A female ninja appeared behind Phillip and swung her sword. The sword tore through part of the barrier, but soon after, her body was repelled by magnetism. Lightning chased after her as she was flung away. However, she had already dodged to the side.
“…You sure do jump around like a cockroach.”
“Where do you see cockroaches this pretty? Would you compare me to a fox instead? What does a cockroach mean to a woman? Cockroach.”
She didn’t miss the brief opening she created. She pulled out a short sword from inside her coat. It was an attribute blade, a 4th-grade artifact. I threw the attribute blade towards Phillip.
Phillip thought nothing of the attribute blade. After all, the force with which it was thrown was weak, and it was certain that the barrier protecting him would repel it.
I imbued my will into the flying attribute blade. Its attribute changed to ice. A bright coldness flowed out of the blade like smoke.
In this world, there are counter-attributes. The counter-attribute to lightning is ice.
Crack!
The ice blade pierces into the lightning barrier.
“Unfortunately for you, this isn’t enough to break my barrier.”
“A crack has formed. That’s more than enough.”
[Ice Strike]
A chunk of ice falls from the sky. It must weigh at least five tons. A cracked superpower barrier won’t be able to stop it.
“Just this much…!”
Phillip responded by increasing the output of his barrier. I would have countered with another counter-attribute magic, but Phillip is not a magician like me; he’s a superhuman.
Zzzzzzzzzzzz!
The size of the barrier increased, and the residual current from the barrier scattered in all directions. The barrier supported the falling ice from below.
‘So that’s why he’s so confident.’
My gaze turned to the attribute blade. It was still stuck in the barrier. The fleeting opening required by Invisible Blade had already been more than fulfilled.
Invisible Blade silently appeared behind Phillip, inside the barrier.
‘The cold generated from the attribute blade melted and became water when it mixed with the barrier’s current. That girl revealed herself from the puddle inside the barrier. Some sort of teleportation magic, huh? No, in this case, it’s ninjutsu.’
Phillip, focusing his power on the barrier, didn’t notice the invisible blade. Her ninja sword moved. The blade deeply slashed Phillip’s back. Just cutting through to his chest and neck would finish him off…
But an explosion erupted from Phillip’s body.
A wave of lightning swept through the laboratory.
Its power was no laughing matter. The barriers protecting my body shattered instantly, and the current tried to electrocute my fallen body. I couldn’t respond to such a sudden occurrence.
‘…Wait. There’s no need to respond.’
The current that entered my body immediately settled and followed my will. It’s a bit tingling, but that’s all. I stood up, pressing my palm against the floor.
At the center of the wrecked laboratory floated Phillip, now made entirely of lightning. He had discarded his human form. The floating figure moved his mouth, but no voice came out. All that could be heard was the sound of the current sparking.
“Hey, any idea what that is?”
Invisible Blade, who had somehow appeared beside me, asked. She wasn’t unscathed either. Part of her fox mask was broken, and her once sleek silver cyber suit was charred black and torn in places. Blood flowed from the torn areas.
“Anything other than a loss of control? He can’t control his power. Think about how he uses his abilities. Simple. He defends with a barrier and attacks by firing lightning.”
“You’re right. It was simple. Electric-type superhumans aren’t common, but I’ve heard they have incredible adaptability…”
“He must have gained his powers not too long ago.”
Phillip fires off a bolt of lightning. The massive lightning beam sweeps through the area as it approaches us. There are too many unnecessary movements. It’s proof that Phillip can’t fully control his energy.
[Ice Wall]
I erected a massive pillar of ice in front to block the lightning. The lightning continues endlessly, eroding the ice pillar.
‘The ice is melting. It won’t last 30 seconds.’
There’s no way a human could maintain that lightning continuously. There must be some secret…
Very well. Here is the translation:
‘There must be a Secret here.’
Having made my decision, I said to Invisible Blade,
“Can you hold out on your own? I’ll destroy the source of that guy’s power and come back.”
“Hmm… I’m not really into holding-out roles. Can’t you do it? You’re doing pretty well already, aren’t you?”
“I don’t have much mana left.”
“…Guess I have no choice. I’ll hold out. But can you cast some support magic on me? My suit’s malfunctioning, so your magic should work.”
“That much is fine.”
[Strength]
[Haste]
[Iron Body]
“Not bad. I can hold out for about three minutes.”
As Invisible Blade spoke, I activated another spell.
[Hallucination]
I sent my illusion to the side. Normally, it wouldn’t work, but the opponent was in a berserk state. The lightning changed direction toward the illusion. Invisible Blade and I moved simultaneously—she toward Philip, and I toward the broken wall.
I entered the wall.
[Light]
I floated a sphere of light into the empty space to illuminate the darkness.
There were rows of reinforced glass tanks. Inside them were naked humans—young men and women. Their number easily reached 200.
‘These are Grade 1 and Grade 2 Mana Awakeners.’
I focused more on the wall. Whiiiiirrrr. A machine installed on the wall was spinning wildly. I could sense black mana from this complicated contraption.
‘…Black magic-based magical engineering? This was giving Philip his power. Did he install it? Or…’
Black magic is still magic.
I suppressed my urge to investigate further. There’s no time for that now.
Crackling sound.
A massive bolt of lightning blossomed like a flower in my hand.
[Lightning Grab]
I grabbed the machine. The current scattered everywhere, destroying the device. The machine was quite durable, but my lightning wasn’t weak either.
‘If this were the old days, I’d need to use more mana… but for some reason, my lightning magic has gotten stronger recently.’
BOOM! BANG! KA-BOOM!
The machine exploded. The spinning stopped. I turned around. The people in the tanks. Whether they’re dead or alive, they don’t seem likely to wake up soon.
“AAAAAAHHHHHHH!”
Philip’s final scream rang out. Outside the wall, Philip lay dead, his upper and lower body separated. Blood and guts stained the floor.
The female ninja in front of him wiped the blood off her ninjato with her hand.
“It suddenly went back to normal. What was in there?”
“Go check it yourself.”
I headed toward the door. Not the exit. It’s the door Philip had always been facing away from. I opened it and went inside. Another secret room appeared. It looked like an Office. There were three thick books on the bookshelf.
‘A book in a secret room. It’s unlikely to be a novel… probably ledgers or experiment logs. If it’s the latter, that would be good.’
I reached for the bookshelf.
Suddenly, a hand shot out from behind me. The slender hand moved faster than mine and took all three books.
I glared at Invisible Blade.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m working. I’ll take these ledgers to the client. I’ll also report your heroic deeds, so don’t worry.”
“…Give one to me. I need to confirm something.”
“I don’t see why you need to check the ledgers.”
“That’s my business. Your actions right now don’t make sense.”
She shrugged.
Without taking my eyes off her, I walked toward the desk. I nervously opened the drawer next to the desk. There were paper documents inside. After checking them, I smirked.
“Jackpot. You can report those ledgers. I’ll report these documents to the client.”
As soon as I finished speaking, she snatched the papers from my hand.
After checking the papers, she fell silent. Well, the papers were the casino’s revenue statements from a year ago, which Philip had reviewed and carelessly put back in the desk drawer.
Woooom
Three magic circles appeared in the air, targeting Invisible Blade.
“You’ve taken a double commission, haven’t you? The job content was to get the ledgers… and the client is probably a council member opposing our client, right? Am I correct?”
