Chapter 17

While the wizards were detaining people and forcing them to display their skill screens to find out who suppressed the fire, I watched from the side.

### Job Skill

Beginner Ice Mage

◇ Beginner Ice Mage’s Magic Sensation—ON

◇ Freeze Magic—Freeze Bestowal Lv.1

“Does ‘Freeze Bestowal’ mean this is not a ranged magic?”

Although this information is readily available online, I, exercising my middle school student privileges, decided to pretend ignorance and ask.

“If a Fire Mage launches a fireball, then an Ice Mage buffs weapons.”

“Could you demonstrate?”

When the Ice Mage picked up the fork and declared “Freeze Bestowal,” a white mist formed around it.

“Wow.”

The magic power pattern is unique.

“Though it’s not as flamboyant as fire magic, it’s potent enough to freeze a slime.”

While I observed several job skills, most of them turned out to be Fire Mages, Ice Mages, or Lightning Mages—there wasn’t much individuality.

The wizards who had been forcing people to display their skill screens quickly realized this situation and began checking job screens instead.

“Then, what kind of job does the student have?”

A wizard looked over and asked. My job is a student.

“Me? I haven’t chosen my job yet.”

Before someone asked to see my job screen, I decided to show them my skill screen first, as there were quite a variety of job options available.

“Why are all the skills turned off?”

“It feels weird when they’re on all the time, even in normal life.”

I always keep them off since having them on would interfere with my senses.

“Ah, I get that feeling. Still, it would be good to get used to it. If you become familiar with it daily, your senses will be sharper during hunting.”

“Really? I’ll have to consider that.”

After witnessing the last necromancer’s summoning skill, I thought I had seen everything and slipped away from the group of wizards.

Somewhere during this, I noticed Doyugeon, who was spectating swordplay practice by the knights using wooden swords.

I approached.

“Ah, are you done?”

“Yeah. I’m about to leave. Are you going to stay longer?”

“No. Let’s go together.”

As we exited the building, I noticed Doyugeon kept smirking, so I asked.

“Why are you so happy?”

“Of course, I’m happy. Did you know what I realized while watching the sword practice?”

“What?”

“That I’m a swordplay genius!”

“So?”

It wasn’t an epiphany; that’s what he always thought.

“I mean, watching the practice highlighted the skill levels so clearly. I didn’t participate because someone said I shouldn’t, but had I participated, there wouldn’t have been any opponents for me.”

“Great. Well done. Bravo.”

I sarcastically applauded.

“Anyway, did you decide on your job now that you’ve seen the skills?”

“Not yet. Still thinking about it.”

“Is it really that hard of a decision? Apprentices without any background online or stories—doesn’t that point to a hidden job?”

“Right. But isn’t ‘beginner’ a higher level than ‘apprentice’? Apprentice is a label for students, but ‘beginner’ is for early career adults who’ve already passed their student days.”

“Then, what beginner job are you thinking about?”

“Uh… a necromancer, maybe?”

The One-Man Army Necromancer. It appeals to me as a rear position class because the skills to look forward to are surreal.

“Is it wise to give up a hidden job for a job like that with such a negative reputation?”

“If a necromancer hears that, they’d be annoyed. And apprentice wizard isn’t a hidden job—I’m sure if it were hidden, the title would be cooler.”

“It’s a system-recommended job, so it must be a hidden one.”

“There’s no guarantee that the system is on our side.”

Since the topic arose, it seemed time to choose a job. I activated the job screen.

“Everyone else is killing goblins, but I get slimes.”

“It’s a hidden job!”

“Even if it’s a hidden job, it’s annoying when it’s forced on you.”

I crossed the forest. When I first logged in, the forest was lush, but now it’s changed significantly due to acid slimes. A slime that’s at least 150cm tall roaming around has turned the once-thriving forest into a place that’s ambiguous to even call a forest nowadays.

Still, slimes tend to move where there are no trees, so the area still retains some semblance of a forest.

Walking along the barren dirt path, I spotted a slime. As I was gathering my magic power to shoot it, I suddenly thought of trying out a fireball and abandoned the hovering spell. Following the Fire Mage’s demonstration, I attempted a fireball. The magic power formed a decent shape but crumbled. It seems unfamiliar compared to healing magic, so it’s not going well.

“What are you doing?”

“Trying to cast a fireball. Please don’t interrupt.”

I once again attempted to transform the energy, but it crumpled again and failed. After several more attempts, it still wouldn’t work. The difficulty is lower than the healing magic I’ve been practicing, so why can’t I do it? It seems I’m doing something wrong.

Replaying the Fire Mage’s demonstration and comparing it with my own attempts showed a subtle difference between the original fireball’s magic pattern and my own. Why, when I clearly mimicked it?

After some thought, I realized that the magic pattern I created included the arrangement from my healing magic. Like drawing two circles to make a snowman, basic magic patterns for property transformation exist in the form of circles. However, the minor but crucial differences between the circular patterns in healing magic and fire magic prevent the formation of an accurate magic pattern when using healing magic methods.

It seems practicing healing magic has inadvertently ingrained its method within me.

Now aware of the issue, I carefully paid attention while attempting the fireball again. The magic power formed a consistent pattern, and finally, a flame ignited mid-air.

“Done—”

Just then, Doyugeon approached, lifted me suddenly, and threw me over his shoulder. My concentration broke, and the fireball dissipated.

“What?”

“Look at the slime.”

The slime was right in front of me.

“I noticed.”

Doyugeon started walking, which made me feel odd. I loosened my grip around his shoulder, pressed against him with my magic book, and naturally floated in the air.

“There’s no need to move. I’ll take care of it now.”

I formed the fireball again.

“Whoa.”

Before throwing it, I noticed something strange about the fireball—it seemed a bit fat. The fireball the Fire Mage created was slightly smaller, wasn’t it? Or am I mistaken?

Before I could confirm, Doyugeon urged me to shoot, and I hurled the fireball at the slime. Upon collision, it exploded in a small burst, incinerating the slime. The slime flopped about, leaving behind experience points, then died.

“Strong fireball.”

“Normally, you’d take advantage of the slime rolling around to get closer and target its core.”

“Hmm, maybe I’m just talented?”

“Finally, you’re catching on.”

“To what? You’ve acknowledged this level from the start.”

[Level Up]

Level 9 → Level 10

“I see, level up.”

We discussed whether to hunt an orc first or start the job change, ultimately deciding to do the job change first.

After defeating two more slimes, I completed the job change quest.

“You’ve completed the job change quest. Recite your skill screen to confirm your job skills.”

A strange, unpleasant sensation swept through me—it seemed I had job-changed.

“Skill screen.”

There are only new skills. I calmed Doyugeon down, eager to try the skill.

“Let’s eat before trying skills. It’s lunchtime anyway.”

I logged out. Since I had pre-ordered a hamburger, my mom should have picked it up and placed it in the kitchen by now.

I retrieved the hamburger set from the kitchen and passed through the living room where my mom was lounging on the sofa reading a book.

“Honey.”

“Yeah?”

“Isn’t the amount of takeout we’ve been eating lately a bit much?”

“Is it?”

“Yes, we’ve been eating too much. I’m worried about our health. What do you think?”

“Not particularly worried.”

“You should be.”

Our short scolding ensued. Ugh, I was trying to avoid cooking for myself and ordered takeout since having Doyugen eat alone seemed lonely, and it seemed troublesome for mom to make lunch every time, so it’s resulted in a rare scolding.

“Should I make Doyugeon’s lunch next time?”

“No need…”

“Then?”

“Hmm… I’ll pack my own lunch.”

“Our daughter?”

Mom burst out laughing. What?

“Why are you laughing?”

Mom only laughed without answering. Though the reaction was dubious, the conversation seemed over, so I returned to my room to log back in.

After passing through the preparation room, I went to the forest to find Doyugeon had already laid out a mat and was waiting. I placed the hamburger set on the mat.

“Let’s check the job skills now.”

“Aren’t you going to eat?”

“While eating. Anyway, since these skills appear combat-unrelated, there’s no need to wait until after finishing the meal.”

As he wished, I activated the skill screen. The job skills, “Dictionary for Apprentice Wizards” and “Magic Recording,” were unlike anything seen on the internet or group discussions.

“Dictionary for Apprentice Wizards—’for!’ It’s completely a privilege.”

“It could be, and it could not be.”

Since the system compelled me to take the job through sarcasm, there is likely something special about it. I peeled off the wrapper for the Deluxe Shrimp Burger and took a bite. Hmm. The taste that ruins one’s health. Alternatively expressed, delicious.

Ignoring Doyugeon’s burdensome stare, I continued chewing. And enjoying some delicious cola.

“Hey?”

“Sure, sure. Activate the Dictionary for Apprentice Wizards.”

A notebook lying in the corner of the mat floated up cheerfully with a bright voice.

“Hello! I am your Wizard’s Dictionary!”

“A hidden skill!”

“That’s right! It’s a hidden skill!”

The notebook flapped. Capable conversation at an artificial intelligence level? Ah, it’s fantasy, isn’t it?

Whether it’s AI or not, it enables many questions if conversational capability is present.

“What should I call you, Wizard’s Dictionary?”

“Please call me Wizard’s Dictionary.”

“Alright. Wizard’s Dictionary, may I ask questions I’m curious about?”

“Of course!”

“What is the system’s purpose?”

“I don’t know about that.”

“Don’t you know anything?”

“Yes. I know nothing. I’m a Wizard’s Dictionary, so please ask questions related to magic.”

“Alright. What is the basic theory of magic?”

“I don’t know that. How about trying to create the theory yourself?”

If the dictionary doesn’t know magic theory, what kind of questions about magic is it asking for?

“Do you know how to use magic arrays?”

“No, I don’t.”

What am I supposed to do?

“Since you’re the magic book, why don’t you know?”

“I’m a Dictionary, not a Magic Book.”

“Why don’t you know, if you’re a Wizard’s Dictionary?”

“Well, that’s true.”

What do you know, exactly?

Doyugeon suggested trying magic to inquire. Magic… so I created a fireball.

“What is this?”

“That’s an imitation of Level 1 Fireball, clumsily done. It’s very inefficient due to excessive magic power but, surprisingly, more powerful than the original.”

Is this a taunt?

Still, it’s comforting that it’s not a skill issue. After Doyugeon chuckled to himself, he took a sip of cola and spoke.

“Can you explain the Magic Recording skill?”

“Of course! The Magic Recording skill records the magic patterns you observe. It’s an active skill, but recording always happens in the background.”

After activating the Magic Recording skill, I found nearly all the magic patterns I had seen so far were recorded like videos. Interesting, but if I concentrate, I can memorize them, so it seems unnecessary to rely on this skill for that purpose. Wouldn’t it be a waste of skill slots? Though when I come across complex magic in the future, it might be useful, for now, it seems pointless.

“Any other questions?”

“Besides the skill, is there anything else you know?”

“Magic!”

“You don’t know the magic theory.”

“Theory isn’t magic.”

“Then, can you use magic?”

“No.”

“Then can you teach magic?”

“I don’t know magic.”

Maybe it would be better to rename it from Wizard’s Dictionary to Skill Dictionary?
