Chapter 171
Gu Ning was carried on the back of a young boy as they walked out of the room and headed deeper into the ship. Someone called out from behind, “Mute! What are you doing? Where are you taking her?”
The boy paused for a moment, turned his head, and saw a man being pierced through the chest by vines.
Gu Ning didn’t look back and simply said, “Let’s go.”
The boy continued carrying Gu Ning forward.
When they broke through the door, someone lunged out from behind it, holding a stool high above their head, ready to smash it down. However, the sharp tip of the vine stopped just three centimeters from their face, freezing them in place. After a moment of shock, they realized that the boy who had broken through the door was carrying Gu Ning on his back. The person seemed to lose all strength, dropping the stool to the ground and stepping aside to reveal Liu Xin and Zhuang Chen behind them. Zhuang Chen was conscious but weak, sitting on the bed, while Liu Xin’s face still showed fear, but her arms were spread out protectively in front of Zhuang Chen.
A man lay in a pool of blood on the floor.
“Mute!” Liu Xin greeted the boy excitedly, but the boy remained expressionless and unresponsive.
Zhuang Chen’s eyes lit up when she saw Gu Ning and said, “Go find Yi Shaoqing and Xia Yu.”
Gu Ning nodded at Liu Mei, instructing her to lock the door. Just as she was about to go find Yi Shaoqing and the others, she ran into Yi Shaoqing, who looked full of energy. Both sides were surprised, and upon questioning, Yi Shaoqing explained that due to his unique constitution, the sedative had little effect on him. He had only pretended to lose consciousness because he felt dizzy and saw the situation turning bad. After being locked in a container, he immediately found a way to escape.
“Don’t worry, Xia Yu and Director Zhong are fine. Is Zhuang Chen okay?” Yi Shaoqing always seemed more concerned about Zhuang Chen.
“She’s fine too,” Gu Ning replied.
Just as Yi Shaoqing breathed a sigh of relief, his expression suddenly changed, and he shouted, “Watch out!” He then forcefully pushed the boy, causing both him and Gu Ning to crash into the wall.
However, the expected gunshot never came. The man standing behind them with a gun was frozen in place, a vine piercing through his wrist and then his chest. He wasn’t dead yet, but he looked down in disbelief at the vine through his chest, then painfully raised his head and said with difficulty, “S-special ability user…”
“Let’s go,” Gu Ning said softly. “There are still many who deserve to die.”
Among the ship’s crew, including Anderson and the mute boy, there were forty-three people in total. In the end, except for the mute boy, everyone else was killed on the ship where they had committed countless atrocities. Gu Ning didn’t even bother to listen to their pleas for mercy.
More than ten women had been imprisoned in the containers. These women hadn’t seen the sun or been on the deck for who knows how long. The sunlight outside was so blinding that they couldn’t open their eyes for a long time. The oldest among them was only twenty-seven, and the youngest was just fourteen, three years younger than Liu Xin. Her body was as thin as a bean sprout, her face pale and lifeless. It took her a long time to respond when spoken to. When she walked out of the cabin, she lingered in the shadows for a while before slowly stepping into the sunlight. Most of these women bore scars from the abuse they had endured.
Compared to them, Liu Xin, who had been protected by Liu Mei, was incredibly lucky. The explanation for why Liu Mei and Liu Xin hadn’t been affected was that Liu Mei had a bad feeling about the situation. She had heard about the drug they used but didn’t dare to say anything at the dinner table. She could only eat as little as possible, while Liu Xin, who had no appetite, only took a few bites. Fortunately, no one noticed her unusual behavior at the time. Later, when she fainted, it was only a pretense.
Liu Xin might not be as brave as Liu Mei, but her kindness and warmth were evident. While others were helping the women out of the cabin, she cooked a large pot of hot porridge and gave each woman a bowl. The pale and numb women slowly warmed up both in body and spirit after drinking the hot porridge and putting on warm clothes.
Some of the women began to cry softly, whether from their tragic experiences or the joy of seeing the light of day again.
One woman suddenly rushed to the deck and began frantically beating the corpses, as if she had gone mad. No one stopped her. Gu Ning and the others stood by the railing, watching the women who seemed to have gone insane, silent as the sea breeze blew and the effects of the drug slowly wore off.
Gu Ning looked at Liu Mei, who was quietly feeding the fourteen-year-old girl spoonfuls of porridge. Her expression was calm, and she even had a faint smile as she whispered something to the girl. The sunlight on her profile made her look particularly beautiful, almost making people forget that she had suffered the same horrors as the other women.
Zhuang Chen sighed softly as she watched the scene and said, “In a way, maybe we should thank Anderson.”
Gu Ning remained silent.
If Anderson hadn’t pulled that last stunt before leaving, they would have only taken Liu Mei and Liu Xin with them. These women would likely have never known freedom until their deaths.
Just then, the ship suddenly shook!
The boy, who had been standing silently and unnoticed, suddenly changed his expression. He walked to the side of the ship and looked down, his face turning pale with fear.
Gu Ning sensed something was wrong and turned to look at the sea. Her heart sank as she saw countless triangular shark fins appearing and disappearing on the surface of the water. The sharks beneath the surface were constantly hitting the ship’s hull, and some were even biting directly into the metal, tearing off chunks with each bite. When they opened their mouths, Gu Ning felt a chill in her heart. Their jagged, sharp teeth were terrifying, and it was clear that these were not normal sharks—they had likely mutated. Anderson had never mentioned that the sharks in the sea had mutated.
“I’ll go steer the ship!” Yi Shaoqing said after just one glance and immediately ran toward the control room.
Xia Yu, pale with fear, said, “This reminds me of a movie…”
She swallowed her words after Zhuang Chen glared at her.
Zhuang Chen fired her gun at the sharks below, and soon the water turned red with blood. However, the blood only seemed to further enrage the mutated sharks, and the ship shook even more violently. The sound of their teeth gnawing on the metal hull was almost unbearable.
The women, who had just begun to regain some color in their faces, were once again terrified.
The ship soon started moving.
Gu Ning held onto the railing and looked down. The triangular shark fins were still circling the ship, their speed almost matching the ship’s. They showed no intention of leaving.
“What is he doing?” Director Zhong suddenly asked, looking at the mute boy who was dragging a corpse from the deck toward the edge of the ship.
Zhuang Chen and Gu Ning immediately understood and said, “Quick, help him!”
They rushed over to help move the bodies, throwing the “fresh” corpses from the deck into the sea. With each splash, sharks leaped out of the water, biting into the bodies before falling back into the sea. Several sharks immediately swarmed around the corpses. As more bodies were thrown overboard, the sea turned red with blood. The sharks, drawn by the scent of blood, lost interest in chasing the ship. Finally, Anderson’s body was also thrown into the sea, and the sharks chasing the ship turned their attention to the floating corpses.
Looking back from the stern, the sea behind the ship was a bloody red, with the sharp triangular fins of the sharks churning the water as they feasted on the corpses…
When they saw the port again, their moods were completely different.
The port was empty, with no ships docked. However, there were about a dozen zombies wandering nearby. Hearing the noise, they all rushed over, waving their arms as if welcoming the ship’s return.
The women were still afraid of the zombies. Some who had been on the ship for a long time didn’t even dare to look at them. Even Liu Mei showed a hint of fear on her face.
Gu Ning glanced at the women and asked, “Has anyone here ever killed a zombie before?”
“Zombies?” Liu Mei frowned. “You mean those monsters down there?”
“Yes. Has anyone here killed one before?” Gu Ning continued.
The women looked at each other, but no one spoke up or raised their hand.
Gu Ning raised her gun and fired at the zombies below. One by one, the zombies fell, some dropping into the sea. When the gunfire stopped, only one thin female zombie remained.
Gu Ning looked around at the women and said, “That one down there is for you.”
To Gu Ning’s surprise, after a brief silence, almost all of the women, except for four who were too weak, said they were willing to try.
In the end, the zombie’s head was smashed to a pulp by the group of weak women…
Considering the women’s physical condition, they had to stay on the ship for another day.
Fortunately, Anderson and his crew had left behind plenty of supplies. The mute boy even found some frozen fish in a freezer—fish they had caught from the sea that were safe to eat and hadn’t mutated.
Liu Mei’s cooking skills were decent. She didn’t seem to like resting and instead busied herself with various tasks. The mute boy and Liu Xin helped out, and for dinner, they sat on the deck, which had been cleaned of blood, eating hot rice and fish. As the evening sun set, they found themselves in a temporarily safe harbor, and many of them felt a sense of contentment.
