Chapter 19

Chapter 19: Act 10 – Battlefield First Aid

Sophie stared at his attributes for a while, but ultimately couldn’t make a decision. He decided to just take things one step at a time. After all, it wasn’t time for that yet, was it?

However, due to the promotion of militia rank, he did have ten skill experience points that needed to be used immediately. In such a perilous environment, any extra strength was valuable. Of course, learning swordsmanship or combat skills seemed like a good plan. Most people in this situation would have chosen that. But after hesitating for a moment, Sophie thought of something else.

While these data points faded from his retina, he looked up at the others. He noticed that these young militiamen were still immersed in the previous excitement. He frowned and then a serious expression appeared on his face.

This wasn’t a good sign.

He gestured for Romaine to help him up a little, then raised his voice, “Do you think we’re safe?”

His voice wasn’t loud, but it made everyone in the room pause. The atmosphere immediately became silent enough to hear a pin drop.

Sophie’s authority still lingered, and the young militiamen hadn’t forgotten who had guided them to victory. Now, the warnings they once dismissed were becoming reality. They suddenly realized that this probably wasn’t the right time to celebrate. Being joyous while others held the power over them was indeed a strange feeling.

Everyone unconsciously stopped and turned their gaze to Sophie. Though weak, Sophie emanated a kind of leader-like aura that could guide them to victory.

Everyone believed this – even Freya sighed softly. This was her duty, but she too had lost herself to the excitement like her team members, momentarily forgetting the responsibilities of a captain.

At this point, the long-haired maid couldn’t help but show a look of self-reproach.

“Bandage the wounds, clean up the battlefield, and review what you learned during training. You shouldn’t need me to remind you, right?” Sophie sighed again. These rookies were even more novice than the newbies. Fortunately, their physical attributes were better than regular NPCs. Of course, that was only when compared to NPCs. Compared to players, they were nothing. But, thinking about the template of the hero and its beginning attribute and growth… well, better not to think about it.

Sophie couldn’t help but rub his forehead.

Under Sophie’s reminder, the young militiamen from Buche moved into action. Indeed, the wounded needed to stop bleeding and wash up. The swords and armor of those skeletons could be recycled, especially the chain mail, which had far better protection than their leather armor.

Some others, under Sophie’s instructions, extinguished the campfire, which made Sophie chuckle. Lighting a fire in the enemy’s rear, he wondered how these guys thought that through.

Freya, originally wanting to lend a hand, realized there was no need as Sophie was far more thoughtful than she was in all aspects.

She couldn’t help but flick her long braided hair, feeling confused. They were all militiamen, but could Bruglas and Buche be so different?

Freya had never thought that city folk could be stronger than them, but standing before Sophie, she couldn’t help but feel discouraged.

It shouldn’t be like this.

Meanwhile, Miss Romaine had no such hesitation. She happily went off with the others to sort through the spoils of war. Clearly, this future businesswoman was only interested in that.

Sophie noticed that the young man Little Finnis had gone alone to the side of the unconscious Joson. Looking up, he asked everyone, “What should we do about Joson?”

This question startled everyone.

For a moment, an unusual silence spread among them.

They were all young people from the same village, familiar with each other and considered good friends. Joson was the most timid of them, but they never expected him to take such an action.

Even if it was out of necessity, this act of betrayal still hurt them. It was as if a crack had appeared in a pure world, and the lack of trust between people began to take root.

Even Freya didn’t know how to face the absence of trust between people. She wanted to protect every comrade, but Joson had not only hurt others but also deeply hurt himself.

Even if Freya wanted to speak, she wasn’t sure she could convince the others.

If she spoke, the harmonious relationship between friends might be gone for good.

Everyone harbored such thoughts. They were after all just innocent young people, weak and resolute at the same time. They hesitated and instinctively turned their gaze to the only outsider present – Sophie.

Our protagonist couldn’t help but sigh.

“Miss Freya?” He asked Freya.

“I… I don’t know…,” Freya replied.

“Then bandage him. Who knows if we can stop the bleeding? He might die before sunrise,” Sophie said with a sigh. He was surprised at how calm he could be, didn’t he see a dead body for the first time?

Everyone unconsciously let out a sigh of relief. This was Sophie’s command, and they only needed to follow it.

This was a kind of escape, but sometimes people need it.

On the side, Sophie beckoned Freya to come closer. The braided maid was a bit startled, looking at him curiously.

“Could you perform first aid, Miss Freya?” Sophie asked.

“Call me Freya. I learned a little from Captain Marden,” Freya nodded.

“Captain Marden? Damn, the old man knows first aid!” Sophie nearly choked.

In the game, the first NPC in the Golan-Elsen area to teach first aid was Doctor Borg from Ridenburg, who would give you a quest to collect 50 bundles of flax, which was truly detested; so many people skipped that and went straight to Bruglas, where they only needed to pay ten silver coins to the Temple of Fire.

Although the market price of 50 bundles of flax was about the same as ten silver coins, it was more troublesome in terms of procedure.

This is a secret that hasn’t been discovered yet! Sophie became excited. However, before he could be happy, he suddenly remembered that he couldn’t return, so what was the point of thinking about it?

He quickly became disappointed and lost interest. “Can you tell me something?” he asked.

Freya took a deep breath and couldn’t help but grit her teeth. She glanced at him. Damn, wasn’t this guy saying her skills were bad?

But fortunately, the maid wasn’t one to hold grudges. After thinking for a bit, she asked, “What do you want to know…”

“The techniques and key points.”

The braided maid did not answer immediately but came over to check on the girl who had fainted out of fear. Miss Romaine, full of excitement, went off to sort through the spoils and left her here.

But it was fine, it was just a reaction to fear.

She turned back to the pale-faced young man and hesitated. “Let me check your wound.”

“There’s no need. I know my wound well.”

“You…”

“Alright, what have you learned?” Sophie changed the subject.

“Mainly about the techniques of bandaging and stopping bleeding, and cleaning wounds.”

Sophie felt a surge of thought, it was like a telepathic connection, not sound, not words, but he definitely sensed a message:

“Freya is teaching you ‘Battlefield First Aid’. It will require 8 experience points to upgrade to level 0. Do you want to learn?”

He took a long breath. This was it! It was exactly like in the game, and of course he had to learn it. Unexpectedly, it was Battlefield First Aid, quite a pleasant surprise!

Battlefield First Aid mainly focuses on stopping bleeding and preventing wound infections, ignoring environmental values and increasing success rates significantly. It was exactly what Sophie needed. He remembered in the game that only the military priests of the Temple of Fire knew Battlefield First Aid, and players from the theological faction were the easiest to learn this skill – other players needed to earn favor.

But it was a major discovery that Marden knew this. He thought and mentally agreed. But another message soon responded:

“No matching career for ‘Battlefield First Aid’ was found. Under which career should it be placed?”

This wasn’t important. However, Sophie placed it under the militiaman profession anyway. Although battlefield first aid was an off-class skill for both militiamen and civilians, it required double experience to upgrade – but civilians being basic identities couldn’t be upgraded.

After all, the skill level couldn’t exceed the level of the career itself.

While Freya carefully explained the key points of bandaging techniques, the brave maid soon realized that the young man lying on the ground was staring at her blankly, as if ignoring her words.

She frowned and immediately felt a wave of anger rising.

This guy wasn’t just finding an excuse to take advantage of her?

The maid clenched her fists, and her long braid started trembling with anger. How dare he? How could he betray Roman? That girl’s heart was all on his side!

Freya restrained herself from stretching out her palm in front of Sophie. When there was no reaction, if it weren’t for the fact that the guy was injured, she would have kicked him. But at this moment, Sophie’s eyes brightened, and he returned to clarity.

He had just sorted out his skills in his mind and felt a little satisfaction. With first aid, he would at least have some kind of endurance assurance in the upcoming battles.

Recovery capability was an important standard for a team’s survival, and experienced players in the game wouldn’t ignore this. Of course, Sophie was no exception. This was why he gave up swordsmanship and combat skills and chose first aid.

But when he raised his head, he saw Freya looking at him with dissatisfaction.

“What’s wrong?” He was startled.

“Did you even listen?” the maid gritted her teeth and asked.

“Of course, I’ve already learned it,” Sophie replied as if it were obvious.

“You…” Freya almost lost her breath. “I haven’t finished talking, and you already know?” She eyed him with deep distrust.

“Of course.”

Freya was stumped, just about to counterargue, when someone called out: “Sister-in-command, we can’t stop Joson’s bleeding, please come take a look…”

The braided maid instinctively turned around only to hear Sophie say from behind, “Perfect, why not let me try?”

“You?”

Freya showed an expression of serious disbelief.

“Help me up.”

“You, don’t overdo it.”

“Or let Miss Roman help me?”

“In your dreams, I’ll never let her near you again, you shameless person!” Freya refused with clenched teeth but still went over to support Sophie.

“What’s shameful?” Sophie was puzzled, how did he suddenly get this title.

“You know.”

“Eh?”

(PS. At the start of the new week, the performance of this book is crucial. Please give a vote if you can, thank you all. And I continue to seek good reviews. I’ll collect the good ones and put them in the relevant section.)
