Chapter 190

Gu Ning didn’t have much time to grieve because Xiang Xu had found the target—a mutated zombie.

“Both the fifth and seventh floors of Building Six have them,” Xiang Xu said with a focused expression. Due to her intense concentration, her face looked somewhat blank, her eyes unfocused. Suddenly, her expression changed: “There’s a team moving up—no special ability fluctuations detected in the team.”

By now, the zombies on the ground in the student dormitory area had been mostly cleared. After confirming that the new campus area and the gymnasium area didn’t need reinforcements, the main team split into ten smaller squads to clear each building, ensuring no zombie was left behind.

Currently, one of the squads was clearing Building Six, and this team had no special ability users—even though their combat effectiveness had improved after training, they were no match for mutated zombies.

Gu Ning’s expression changed abruptly, and she shouted into the walkie-talkie: “All teams, attention! All teams, attention! The team clearing Building Six, evacuate immediately! Evacuate immediately! There are mutated zombies inside! Building Six, respond if you hear this!”

However, there was no response from the other end of the walkie-talkie.

“Gu Ning! Get in the car!” Fang Fa drove over and shouted at Gu Ning.

Gu Ning immediately jumped into the car, pulling Xiang Xu and Jia Daozhang in with her. The car, now carrying four people, sped toward Building Six.

“Building Six, respond if you hear this! Building Six, respond if you hear this!”

Gu Ning’s slightly anxious voice kept echoing from the walkie-talkie.

A 23-person squad had already cleared up to the fourth floor when they were startled by the sudden noise from the walkie-talkie. The squad leader, Zhang Qifeng, who was at the front, complained: “Turn the volume down! You’re going to alert all the zombies in the building!”

The young man in charge of the walkie-talkie quickly fumbled to lower the volume and then whispered, “Captain? Which building are we in again?”

“Building Seven, right?” Someone hesitated before answering: “Isn’t Building Six assigned to Team Thirteen, Zhang Sheng’s team?”

“Why hasn’t Zhang Sheng responded? Did something happen?” Zhang Qifeng stopped in his tracks, a look of concern on his face. Although they weren’t from the same main team, the settlement points were all about healthy competition, and all the team members were familiar with each other. He had even shared a meal with Zhang Sheng before. Plus, with the mention of mutated zombies on the walkie-talkie, he couldn’t help but worry that Zhang Sheng’s team might have already encountered them.

Suddenly, a loud banging sound came from below the third floor.

Everyone instinctively turned to look.

Drip—

Zhang Qifeng felt a drop of liquid fall on his head. He froze for a moment, reflexively reaching up to touch it, only to find the sensation sticky. He looked up and his pupils contracted sharply! Before he could scream, a slimy, rope-like object appeared in front of his eyes and suddenly wrapped around his neck. He instinctively grabbed at the snake-like thing tightening around his throat, only to feel a sharp pain on the back of his neck, as if he’d been pricked by a needle. From that point, an electric shock-like sensation spread through his body, and Zhang Qifeng felt his entire body go numb. He couldn’t even open his mouth, let alone make a sound. The terrifying part was that, although he couldn’t move or speak, he remained fully conscious. He felt the thing tighten its grip, and to his horror, he realized his body was being lifted off the ground!

“Hey? Where’s the captain?!” Someone suddenly turned around, exclaiming in surprise.

Clang! A gun fell from the fifth-floor staircase, hitting the railing with a loud noise.

“That’s the captain’s gun!” A skinny young man in the team said, then quickly ran to the staircase and looked up, just in time to see a pair of legs being dragged away from the fifth-floor railing—”The captain’s up there!” His expression changed abruptly, and he suddenly realized something, turning to look at his teammates, who were all visibly shaken: “We’re in Building Six—”

“What’s going on? Why hasn’t there been any response?” Jia Daozhang muttered, puzzled by the silent walkie-talkie.

“What’s the situation?” Gu Ning asked Xiang Xu.

Xiang Xu’s eyes were unfocused as she murmured, “The mutated zombies are starting to move…”

“Mayday! Mayday! Building Six requesting backup! Building Six requesting backup!” A frantic voice suddenly came through the walkie-talkie, sounding like the person was running at full speed.

Gu Ning immediately grabbed the walkie-talkie: “Headquarters received! Headquarters received! Evacuate Building Six immediately!”

The urgent voice on the other end responded: “We’re on the fifth floor of Building Six! The captain’s been taken by a mutated zombie! We’re going to rescue him!”

Gu Ning shouted into the walkie-talkie: “Headquarters orders you to evacuate immediately!”

Xiang Xu’s expression suddenly changed: “It’s too late…”

The voice on the walkie-talkie cut off abruptly after saying, “We—”

“Building Six! Building Six! Respond if you hear this! Respond if you hear this!”

Gu Ning kept calling, but the other end remained eerily silent.

Xiang Xu’s voice trembled slightly: “There are at least four mutated zombies… They’re surrounded.”

Twenty-something ordinary people against four mutated zombies—there wasn’t even a one in ten thousand chance of winning. All they could hope for now was that the team could hold out a few more minutes—

Gu Ning shouted at Fang Fa, who was driving: “Fang Fa!”

“Got it!” Fang Fa responded, slamming his foot on the accelerator.

As soon as the car stopped, Fang Fa leaped out of the driver’s seat and sprinted toward the building without even saying a word to Gu Ning and the others. His speed was naturally extremely fast, and in the blink of an eye, he was already charging up the stairs.

Gu Ning followed closely behind, shouting at Jia Daozhang and Xiang Xu: “Be careful!”

Then she also rushed into the dormitory building, sprinting up the stairs!

Jia Daozhang quickly jumped out of the car, carrying Xiang Xu with him. As soon as they got out, they heard gunshots from above. While climbing the stairs, Jia Daozhang instructed: “Xiang Xu, stick close to me, don’t get lost!”

By the time Fang Fa reached the fifth floor, several people were already lying on the ground, motionless, their condition unknown. One team member was huddled against the wall, covered in blood and moaning in pain. A mutated zombie was crawling along the wall toward him. Without hesitation, Fang Fa raised his gun and fired!

The mutated zombie reacted to the gunshot with incredible speed, retreating backward and disappearing into the ceiling. A bullet grazed its front claw and embedded itself in the wall. The zombie’s head snapped toward Fang Fa’s direction at the staircase. Its face, covered in slime, had its eyes closed, but Fang Fa could still feel it “staring” at him, even sensing its hatred!

This wasn’t Fang Fa’s first encounter with this type of mutated zombie. Back at Lishui Hospital, he had suffered a major loss at its hands, nearly getting hit by the paralyzing spike on its tail.

Xiang Xu had said there were at least four mutated zombies, but only one was here. Had the others gone off to hunt the rest of the team?

Suddenly, his danger sense flared!

Fang Fa, relying on his keen sense of danger, suddenly dodged to the side and turned around just in time to see a zombie hanging upside down from the ceiling, its long tail dangling down, the spike on its tail aimed at where he had just been standing. If he hadn’t dodged, he would have been impaled! A wave of fear washed over him.

He raised his gun and fired at the mutated zombie!

These mutated zombies, thanks to the slime covering their bodies, could move incredibly fast across floors, walls, and ceilings, almost matching Fang Fa’s speed when he activated his speed ability. He fired several shots, but none of them hit! Meanwhile, another mutated zombie had circled around the ceiling and, while Fang Fa was distracted by the first one, silently positioned itself above him before leaping down from the ceiling, lunging straight at Fang Fa!

“Fang Fa, watch out!” Gu Ning’s voice rang out at the same time as gunfire!

Hearing Gu Ning’s warning, Fang Fa didn’t hesitate to dodge to the side. The mutated zombie landed where he had just been standing. Two bullets struck it, one in the neck and one in the chest. Although not fatal, the bullets clearly had an effect. The zombie let out a piercing screech—less a cry of pain and more a call to its companions—

Gu Ning’s expression remained calm. She tossed her gun aside and gripped her weapon, focusing intently on the two mutated zombies as she said to Fang Fa: “Go find the others! I’ll handle this!”

Fang Fa nodded and immediately followed the trail left by the mutated zombies!

“Can you hold on?” Gu Ning asked.

She was asking the person huddled in the corner, who was still barely alive.

The person tried to speak but couldn’t, only managing a weak nod.

“Good.” Gu Ning’s eyes turned cold and sharp. With a twist of her hands, the blade in her hand traced an elegant arc as she charged toward one of the mutated zombies!

The other mutated zombie seemed to sense something and quickly scrambled up the wall toward the staircase—

“Trying to run?!” Gu Ning shouted lightly. As she leaped and landed, there was a loud bang! The wall the zombie had just slid across suddenly cracked open! A vine burst out from the plaster wall, stretching out like lightning and coiling around the fleeing zombie’s tail in a spiral. At the same time, several sharp thorns sprouted from the vine, piercing through the slime covering the tail and digging into the flesh, pinning the zombie’s tail to the wall!

The mutated zombie let out a furious, pained screech!

From the moment the vine burst through the wall, its precise targeting, the control over the vine, and the instantaneous growth of the thorns—all of this required not only a powerful source of special ability but also an insane level of control over that ability. Any wood-type special ability user attempting this series of moves would need to be fully focused and give it their all. Yet, Gu Ning didn’t even pause for a moment while controlling her ability. As the vine pinned the mutated zombie’s body, her blade also plunged into the zombie’s body, piercing through its back and into the ground, pinning the zombie in place! The zombie’s upper body arched upward, its slime-covered mouth gaping open as it let out a shrill scream! Its tail whipped through the air, aiming for Gu Ning!

Gu Ning released the hilt of her blade and sidestepped, the wind from the tail brushing past her face. In her hand, she now held a small, sharp object about the length of a finger. She stabbed it into the zombie’s tail before it could fully swing. The tail twitched, its strength seemingly drained in an instant, like a vine detached from a tree, weakly falling to the ground under the force of the wind—and with a few more struggles, the zombie’s body went completely still.

Gu Ning turned to Jia Daozhang and Xiang Xu, who had just caught up: “You handle this!” Then she ran up the stairs, stabbing another small object into the tail of the zombie pinned to the wall before leaping over its body and continuing upward.
