Clang! A gun fell from the fifth-floor staircase, hitting the railing with a loud noise.

“That’s the captain’s gun!” A skinny young man in the team said, then quickly ran to the staircase and looked up, just in time to see a pair of legs being dragged away from the fifth-floor railing—”The captain’s up there!” His expression changed abruptly, and he suddenly realized something, turning to look at his teammates, who were all visibly shaken: “We’re in Building Six—”

“What’s going on? Why hasn’t there been any response?” Jia Daozhang muttered, puzzled by the silent walkie-talkie.

“What’s the situation?” Gu Ning asked Xiang Xu.

Gu Ning immediately grabbed the walkie-talkie: “Headquarters received! Headquarters received! Evacuate Building Six immediately!”

The urgent voice on the other end responded: “We’re on the fifth floor of Building Six! The captain’s been taken by a mutated zombie! We’re going to rescue him!”

Xiang Xu’s expression suddenly changed: “It’s too late…”

The other mutated zombie seemed to sense something and quickly scrambled up the wall toward the staircase—

“Trying to run?!” Gu Ning shouted lightly. As she leaped and landed, there was a loud bang! The wall the zombie had just slid across suddenly cracked open! A vine burst out from the plaster wall, stretching out like lightning and coiling around the fleeing zombie’s tail in a spiral. At the same time, several sharp thorns sprouted from the vine, piercing through the slime covering the tail and digging into the flesh, pinning the zombie’s tail to the wall!

The mutated zombie let out a furious, pained screech!

From the moment the vine burst through the wall, its precise targeting, the control over the vine, and the instantaneous growth of the thorns—all of this required not only a powerful source of special ability but also an insane level of control over that ability. Gu Ning released the hilt of her blade and sidestepped, the wind from the tail brushing past her face. In her hand, she now held a small, sharp object about the length of a finger. She stabbed it into the zombie’s tail before it could fully swing. The tail twitched, its strength seemingly drained in an instant, like a vine detached from a tree, weakly falling to the ground under the force of the wind—and with a few more struggles, the zombie’s body went completely still.

Gu Ning turned to Jia Daozhang and Xiang Xu, who had just caught up: “You handle this!” Then she ran up the stairs, stabbing another small object into the tail of the zombie pinned to the wall before leaping over its body and continuing upward.
