Chapter 20

It seems that Sharl and I excel and struggle in opposite areas.

“Don’t give up on me.”

My arm is going to fly off.

“I’m not going to do such a thing. Alright, I’ll teach you again from the beginning.”

She’s really patient.

“Please.”

After continuing to learn the basics from Sharl, I gradually began to understand.

“Hmm, hmm.”

“Can you do it? You should at least understand spatial magic, right?”

I think I can understand it.

“Alright…”

I place my hand on the smartphone on the table.

When I activate the magic, the smartphone disappears instantly.

“Hand Power.”

You’re coming through loud and clear!

“That’s great…”

Sharl’s face looks completely exhausted.

“Umm, how do I bring it back?”

“This time, it’s your turn.”

Since Sharl pointed to the spell formula written in the notebook, I activate the magic as written. Instantly, the smartphone reappears.

“Amazing! It’s magic!”

It’s the first magic I’ve used outside of reinforcement magic.

“Well, I thought you’d be able to use this because it’s not the type of magic you’re bad at – the one that involves releasing magic power outside your body.”

Ah, I see.

“Teacher, thank you.”

“Not at all… I’m tired.”

Sorry for being so dim-witted.

“How about some lunch? You can eat whatever you like.”

“I’ll get mine… I’ll have this pasta.”

Sharl opens the menu and makes her decision right away.

“Would you like some wine?”

“I don’t drink. I can’t even drink… also, I’m a minor.”

I thought she might drink wine since she’s French, but it seems she doesn’t. Though I’m half French, I don’t drink either.

“I’ll get the dragon-fried rice set.”

We order our lunch, which arrives quickly, and we start eating.

“It’s delicious.”

Sharl nods while eating her carbonara.

“Hey, Sharl, aren’t you a young lady from the prestigious Iver family? Though it’s about time I asked— aren’t fancy restaurants more your style than a family restaurant?”

I imagine her eating a full course meal at a high-class restaurant that is not a family establishment.

“I’m a student, so a family restaurant is fine, isn’t it? Besides, it’s actually quite delicious”.

Well, my dragon-fried rice is tasty too.

“The students at the academy don’t have much of a sense of common life, huh?”

Even Toko, whose favorite are convenience store fried chickens, seems out of place.

“Yeah, maybe. Actually, getting into the academy is expensive.”

Money…

Did Grandma La Folle pay for it?

“That’s why it’s surprising to see Sharl here.”

“Hmm, yeah, I guess I don’t come here very often. It’s hard to come alone.”

Alone…

“Friends?”

“None.”

She declares without hesitation.

“Really?”

“If I go back to Paris, I have friends from middle school, but there are none here in Japan. I’ve only been here since I entered the magic academy.”

“How about friends from the magic academy?”

“None.”

She declared it again…

“Umm…

“Haa… Tsukasa, what did the kids from Class D say about me?”

Can I even say it?

“President of the Student Council.”

“Be honest. They probably say something along the lines of intimidating, arrogant, and full of pride, right?”

Well, it seems that they said such things…

“Hey…where is the scariness and arrogance?”

Can’t see it?

“I’m the heir to the prestigious Iver family. Thus, to avoid tarnishing the family name, I try not to speak much.”

A certain someone says something similar…

“So?”

“I became the student council president in the first year. Of course, it was due to my family’s influence. How do you feel about that? Am I too off-putting?”

No, you’re a kind and beautiful person?

“Maybe, there are some rumors or backbiting, but it seems that you’re not denying them?”

“That’s right. Thanks to that, everyone views me as an unpleasant elite. The perfect student council president fitting for the prestigious Iver family… but inside, I’m just a shy alchemist with no magical talent.”

Sharl chuckled bitterly.

“Shy?”

“My hobby is to lock myself in my room and grin while staring at chemical substances. That’s shy, isn’t it?”

Alchemy… No, you seem like a suspicious witch.

“Well, when said aloud, it does sound that way… How about La Folle? I heard you two are like cats and dogs?”

Since we’re on the topic, might as well ask.

“I guess because we’re the same age, it’s unavoidable. But I think our paths crossed at the worst possible timing. She’s La Folle’s prodigy. We are fundamentally different from birth.”

“Is that so?”

I think Sharl is also quite amazing…

“Of course, her magical talent is far superior. She’s a monster who, in the mere span of a year after becoming a wizard, was able to master advanced magic. Moreover, the worst thing is, La Folle and our family, Iver, don’t get along. So, position-wise, I absolutely cannot acknowledge Toko-san… That’s tough.”

Hmm, I can’t say much about that…

It’s true that I think Toko is excellent.

She was fast at picking up simple spells when she was a kid, and her school grades were good too.

Still, that guy is an idiot, you know…

“Why are you normal with me? You were also chatting normally when you guided me around, right.”

“…Why I wonder. Maybe because Tsukasa wasn’t familiar with this world, or perhaps… for your personality?”

Did you almost say “idiot?”

“Well, I don’t really know much about those families anyway.”

The speaker here, but La Folle’s grandparents’ house is completely a rural grandpa and grandma kind of feel.

France is just too far, you know.

“Hey, aren’t you from a prestigious family?”

“Kind of. But I don’t care.”

Apparently, Nagase is prestigious too.

No need to mention La Folle.

“Don’t you care?”

“I’ve got enough on my plate with my own issues.”

You mean the bracelet thingy.

“Right…”

Sharl turned to the side and gazed outside the window.

Her profile really is beautiful.

“Hey, Sharl, can you help me with my studies again? There’s this sealing spell I really want to master.”

“Hmm… Why? I’ve always been curious as to why someone who dislikes studying and appears to have little interest in magic would be so fixated on seal-breaking spells?”

Sharl asks while still looking to the side.

“If you tell me why you’re in Japan, I’ll tell you the reason.”

I can definitely tell from the atmosphere that it’s something you absolutely don’t want to talk about.

“Then I won’t ask. Let’s study… It’s fine with me. In return, please teach me martial arts.”

“Do you even need martial arts?”

“Yes. I want to get stronger, plus, I think it’s good for my health”.

It might be better for dieting than just walking.

“Sure, it’s one form of health practice.”

Like Tai Chi.

“Got it? Thus, it seems we’ll have to restart your studies, something you dislike.”

Having finished her meal, Sharl shifted the dishes aside and took out the textbook.

“Alright…”

“Next is yesterday’s curriculum on curses.”

“Right…”

My head is starting to hurt…

Afterwards, we studied until we were both worn out and parted ways in the evening. Then, after returning home and entering the living room, I found my mom cooking, my dad working on something on his computer, and Toko fiddling with her smartphone while watching TV. The whole family was together.

First, I went to Toko and gave her a silent tap on the head.

“Ouch! What!? Why did you hit me!?”

Just had to be her fault.

“Repent.”

“For what!? Daddy! Big Brother is bullying me!”

Toko starts crying to father.

“Tsukasa, get along with your sister.”

Father gave me a reprimand while still working on his computer.

“Father, can I talk to you for a moment?”

Ignoring the reprimand, I approached father.

“What is it?”

Father stopped his computer work and turned to me.

“Give me 1,000 yen every week. I’ll use it to study at a family restaurant.”

“Are you truly studying?”

As he asked, I pulled out my smartphone from my pocket and stored it with spatial magic.

“Someone taught me.”

“……Understood.”

Looking at my spatial magic, father gave a solemn nod.

Right after, father glanced toward the kitchen and seemed surprised.

“Eh? What? Hmm…”

Taking after father, I looked to the kitchen and saw mother crying while looking at me…

“An idiot like you, who has no sense of magic but can perform spatial magic, …”

Do you have to go that far, old woman?

“A beautiful wizard taught me.”

“I see… It must be a wonderful woman with a pure heart then, isn’t it?”

Nope, it’s the heir of the Iver family you dislike.

Nagase Tsukasa, born into a prestigious family of modern-day wizards, had immense magic power from birth but could only use magic to strengthen his physical abilities. Resigned to the fact that he couldn’t become a proper wizard, Tsukasa decided to live an ordinary life as a regular person. However, Tsukasa wasn’t particularly bright. When applying for high school he aimed low and took the entrance exam for a backup school, but he slacked off and played around too much, resulting in him failing the exam and becoming a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). As Tsukasa awkwardly navigated his way through the new school year, he accidentally ended up wearing a cursed bracelet that would kill him if left alone. The curse was so powerful that even his mother, a skilled curse breaker, couldn’t lift it. To remove the bracelet he had two options; cut off his arm, or use his immense magic power to break the curse. Thus Tsukasa enrolled in a modern magic academy in a parallel world to learn the curse-breaking magic he needed. And so began Tsukasa’s carefree school life, where his only talents were his magic power and martial arts skills.
