Chapter 202: Medicine
In the New World, within a spacious tent of the Tupa Tribe camp.
Since acquiring a new language, Kapak had been poring over his collection chest inside the tent, reading voraciously the inscriptions on the items within, and curiously understanding their effects.
The various exquisite artifacts captivated Kapak. Seeing these interesting and convenient products, he felt a hint of admiration for the invaders’ wisdom. Although their actions were hateful, their advanced technology was alluring.
“If only one day our tribe could also produce such marvelous things, we would not only be able to resist the invaders but also live and develop better.”
As Kapak flipped through the contents of the chest, he reflected with a sigh. He spent the entire afternoon sitting in front of the chest, fiddling with its contents.
Just as Kapak continued to examine his collection, suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded outside the tent. Upon hearing the footsteps, Kapak hastily stuffed everything back into the chest. Just as he was about to close the lid, the tent flap was lifted, and a bearded, robust, and anxious tribal man appeared at the entrance.
“Balu? What’s the rush?”
Looking at the agitated man at the door, Kapak asked curiously after tidying up his belongings. The other man took a few breaths before answering.
“Huff… huff… Shanya has contracted Scarlet Fever. She’s very weak now, and the shaman says she might not make it through tonight.”
“What?!”
Upon hearing Balu’s words, Kapak stood up immediately and walked out of the tent with him. After wandering through the camp filled with various tents for some time, they finally arrived at a relatively large tent. Several people were standing at the entrance.
Entering the tent, Kapak saw that many people had gathered here. They were anxiously watching the scene in the center, where a tribal woman was holding a girl around ten years old, tears streaming down her face.
At this moment, the girl in the woman’s arms looked weak, covered in sweat, breathing heavily, seemingly in a feverish state, almost unconscious. Red marks of varying depths adorned her skin.
Seeing this situation, Kapak felt a pang in his heart and asked the woman.
“Aunt Muma… what’s wrong with Shanya…”
“It’s Scarlet Fever… the shaman has done everything possible, but there’s nothing he can do. It’s not caused by an evil spirit, and ordinary herbs are useless. The shaman said everything depends on the will of the Great Soul. But you know, Shanya is so young, and she may not survive.”
With a choked voice, the woman told Kapak. Hearing this, Kapak’s heart sank, and his expression became as grave as those around him.
Scarlet Fever was a disease that tribal people on this land had been prone to since ancient times. The cause was unknown. Once infected, red marks would appear on the body, accompanied by weakness and fever, even leading to unconsciousness, with a high mortality rate.
Healthy adults could have a chance of overcoming this illness based on their constitution, while the elderly and children had little hope.
On this land, many diseases were caused by evil spirits, which could be resolved by shamans expelling the evil spirits. However, many other illnesses were not caused by evil spirits. In such cases, shamans could only rely on herbal medicine, but its efficacy was limited. The current illness could not be treated with herbs.
Based on past experience, Shanya’s condition was virtually hopeless. Everyone present was immersed in a sorrowful atmosphere. This was not the first time they had experienced such a situation; every year, a certain number of tribe members died from this disease.
After learning about Shanya’s current condition, Kapak felt extremely disheartened. He lowered his head along with the other tribe members, looking at the sick girl tormented by the disease. In the face of this illness, they could do nothing but mourn.
In the midst of Aunt Muma’s sobs, the atmosphere grew solemn. Kapak recalled Shanya’s lively appearance in the past, feeling heavy-hearted. Suddenly, he seemed to have an idea, and a flash of inspiration struck him.
“Aunt Muma, wait a moment, Shanya might still have a chance. I’ll be right back!”
Kapak said to the crowd around him and then rushed out of the tent under everyone’s puzzled gazes.
Rushing through the camp, Kapak ran back to his own tent and began searching through his chest. After a while, he found a small glass bottle containing white pills.
Holding the glass bottle, Kapak looked at the label paper attached to it, which stated the name of the pills and usage instructions.
“Alomesine Tablets, produced by Kitbit Pharmaceutical Company of Tivyán, specifically for treating Scarlet Fever in the New World…”
“New World Scarlet Fever… Could this be Scarlet Fever?” Looking at the description on the bottle, Kapak murmured. Then, he carefully read the symptom description on the bottle, finding it consistent with Scarlet Fever symptoms. He knew that the invaders’ term “New World” referred to the land where he lived.
“It’s very likely Scarlet Fever. A disease that has plagued tribes since ancient times, and the invaders have actually produced a cure in just a few decades?”
Holding the bottle in disbelief, Kapak muttered. However, there was no time for him to think too much. After checking the dosage, he poured two tablets into his hand and rushed out of his tent, returning to Shanya’s tent.
“Aunt Muma, give these to Shanya.”
Approaching the woman, Kapak handed her the tablets and said. The woman showed a hint of doubt in her expression.
“Kapak… what is this?”
“This is a herbal powder ball made by a traveling shaman I met before, who said it’s effective against Scarlet Fever. You should try it.”
Kapak said. Due to the invaders’ malicious behavior, the tribe members generally rejected industrial products except for firearms. Thus, Kapak temporarily did not tell the truth.
“Is that so… then let’s try it…”
Listening to Kapak’s words, Aunt Muma, who was nearly desperate, accepted the tablets and gave them to the semi-conscious Shanya, along with some water.
Then, Kapak joined many others in waiting in the tent. They waited for over two hours.
During these two hours, the girl’s breathing in Aunt Muma’s arms gradually became more stable, the red marks on her body faded slightly, her body temperature dropped, and she fell into a peaceful sleep.
Seeing this, everyone present showed a look of surprise, and Aunt Muma looked at Kapak with delight.
“Great Soul, this is truly miraculous! Kapak, your medicine really works! Thank you so much, Kapak! You saved my Shanya!”
Aunt Muma exclaimed gratefully to Kapak, while those watching the scene discussed in disbelief, marveling at this incredible event.
“Hey, Kapak, you’re amazing! You can even heal people…”
“The Scarlet Fever, even the shaman lord couldn’t do anything about it, but this kid’s medicine actually worked…”
“Kapak! Do you have any more medicine?”
