Chapter 203
It didn’t take three days; Zhuang Chen’s message arrived on the afternoon of the second day.
However, it wasn’t Zhuang Chen who delivered it, but Yi Shaoqing. After dumping Ji Zhaotang on Gu Ning, he went straight to the research lab to find Gao Yue.
“This is something Zhuang Chen asked me to give you,” Ji Zhaotang handed a file bag to Gu Ning.
Gu Ning wasn’t in a hurry to open it. Instead, she asked, “Is it safe for you to be out here? Aren’t you worried about being watched?”
Ji Zhaotang kicked a pebble on the ground, then glanced at Gu Ning and pouted, “I’m just a nobody. Who’d bother watching me?” After a pause, he suddenly added, “You don’t look so good.”
“Really?” Gu Ning was taken aback, then smiled. “I’ve always been like this.” Gu Mama had been nagging her for a while now, saying she looked pale and had been stuffing her with all sorts of blood-nourishing foods. She even had a few red dates in her pocket right now.
Ji Zhaotang pouted again, hesitated for a moment, and then asked casually, “Is Ninth Brother treating you well?”
Gu Ning wasn’t sure why Ji Zhaotang suddenly brought this up. Thinking about how, in another world, he used to call her “Ninth Sister-in-law” every day, she felt a bit awkward. She simply replied, “He’s good to me. By the way, Xia Yu mentioned he needed to talk to you. He’s probably at the military department now. You should go find him. On your way out, stop by the supply bureau and pick up the stuff you asked me for last time. I have things to do, so I won’t keep you company.” She waved the file bag in her hand and walked off to discuss the next steps with Third Brother and Jia Daozhang.
Ji Zhaotang watched Gu Ning walk away, then angrily kicked another pebble before trudging off in a sulk.
Gu Ning, Third Brother, and Jia Daozhang gathered together. At this point, the base was mostly run by Third Brother and Jia Daozhang, with Gu Ning only occasionally getting involved.
The list Zhuang Chen provided involved over 300 people, including the Gu family and those connected to them. The person whose spiritual power Xiang Xu had detected was also a subordinate of the Gu family.
Zhuang Chen had pieced together the entire story.
The truth was that Gu Yunzhi, the current head of the Gu family and the military commander of Base Two, had orchestrated the whole plan. Using the spiritual power of psychic system special ability users, they interfered with the drones, causing a brief signal disruption in the monitoring room. They were the ones who set off the fireworks and even used some tricks to lure more zombies. Otherwise, the fireworks alone wouldn’t have attracted so many zombies.
After setting everything up, Gu Yunzhi reported it to the central command of Base One. In his plan, once the special ability users and military equipment at Oasis Base were nearly depleted, they would swoop in and become the saviors of the base. In his view, as long as the people had a place to live and food to eat, they wouldn’t care who was in charge.
Who wouldn’t covet the big prize that was Oasis Base? Previously, they had been hesitant, but with Gu Yunzhi’s assurance that they could take Oasis Base with minimal losses, the central command agreed.
However, Oasis Base had delivered a resounding slap to Gu Yunzhi’s face. The central command, wary of Oasis Base’s ability to “silently” eliminate tens of thousands of zombies, refused to engage in further conflict with them.
Third Brother tapped the table and said, “Base Two… If we specifically target this Gu guy, will Base One and Base Three get involved? We have a thousand special ability users now, but most of them are newly evolved. If the three bases unite, we’ll be in trouble.”
“I don’t think it needs to be that complicated,” Jia Daozhang suddenly said with a sly tone. “Why don’t we find a way to lure them onto our turf?”
Third Brother and Gu Ning were both startled, then quickly began to ponder the idea.
For several days in a row, large groups of survivors had been pouring into the Capital Base from outside. These people seemed to know each other and often brought large amounts of supplies or crystal cores. At first, it was just a dozen or so people at a time, but by the third day, there were already hundreds of people lined up at the entrance of Base Two, waiting to enter. It was worth noting that most of the Capital’s survivors had already been absorbed by the Capital Base and Oasis Base. The number of survivors coming from outside the Capital was usually small, maybe a few dozen a day, and sometimes none at all. This sudden influx was highly unusual, especially since these people were well-dressed, energetic, and carrying large amounts of supplies and crystal cores.
This anomaly quickly caught people’s attention.
*Knock knock knock!* A man in a military uniform knocked on the door three times. After hearing “Come in,” he turned the handle and entered.
“Sir, the investigation results are in,” the military man said.
The person sitting behind the desk was none other than Gu Yunzhi. He looked up at the man and gestured for him to continue.
“These people are all from Oasis Base.”
Gu Yunzhi visibly perked up at this. “Oh?”
The military man continued, “According to reports, Oasis Base is in complete chaos. As you predicted, after they killed tens of thousands of zombies, they suffered heavy losses. Even their base leader died, and now they’re in the middle of an internal conflict! These people fled because of the chaos.”
A glint of excitement flashed in Gu Yunzhi’s eyes. “What about Base One and Base Three?”
The military man replied cautiously, “I’ve checked. Just like Base Two, they’ve been receiving people from Oasis Base these past few days—men, women, and children, all carrying large amounts of supplies and crystal cores. Rumor has it that Oasis Base has a massive stockpile of resources. And think about it, with tens of thousands of zombies killed, how many crystal cores must there be?”
Gu Yunzhi pondered for a moment, then said, “Find someone who just entered the base, preferably a younger person, and bring them to me.”
The military man, knowing his superior’s cautious nature, nodded and left.
About ten minutes later, he returned with a twelve or thirteen-year-old girl.
The girl looked young and innocent, her face filled with anxiety as she stood next to the military man, stealing glances at Gu Yunzhi.
Gu Yunzhi quickly put on a grandfatherly smile and beckoned to the girl. “Come here, little one. Don’t be afraid.”
The girl timidly walked over, clutching the hem of her clothes, and remained silent.
“I’m just going to ask you a few questions. If you answer honestly, I’ll have this uncle take you back to your parents. But if you lie, you’ll never see your family again. Understand?” Gu Yunzhi said with a kind tone that carried a hidden threat.
The girl was terrified, her eyes welling up with tears as she stared at Gu Yunzhi.
Gu Yunzhi asked, “Are you from Oasis Base?”
The girl nodded.
“Why did you leave Oasis Base and come here?”
The girl sniffled a few times before stammering, “Mom said the base isn’t safe anymore. A lot of police officers died, and now people are fighting and stealing everywhere. Many people ran away, so Mom brought me here.” As she spoke, she became more upset. “I didn’t want to leave. I have so many friends in Oasis Base, and I wanted to keep going to school… Waaah!” The girl burst into tears, her face streaked with tears. The military man couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for her. “Sir?” he asked for instructions.
Gu Yunzhi studied the girl for a while, as if trying to determine if she was telling the truth, before finally saying, “Alright, take her away.”
The military man quickly led the girl out.
“Mom!” The girl immediately ran into the arms of a young woman waiting outside, sobbing loudly.
The military man returned to the room. “Sir, what do you think?”
Gu Yunzhi snorted coldly. “This is exactly what I expected. Since the central command refuses to send troops, there’s no need to involve them.”
“What do you mean, sir?”
A greedy glint appeared in Gu Yunzhi’s eyes. “If the central command thinks Oasis Base is too dangerous to touch, then I’ll take it for myself. Let’s see if it’s really as poisonous as they say…”
The little girl, now holding the young woman’s hand, didn’t relax until they were downstairs. She then whispered, “Auntie Qiao Yu, did I do okay?”
The young woman smiled faintly and whispered back, “You did great.” Then she quickly composed herself and added, “But be careful. We’re still in enemy territory. We’ll have to stay here for a few more days, so don’t let your guard down.”
The girl nodded, her clever and mischievous expression disappearing as she reverted to the scared little rabbit look from before.
The young woman couldn’t help but marvel at how quickly the girl could switch expressions. She wondered what kind of training these base orphans received at school to be so capable at such a young age.
