Chapter 285: The Flip Driver
Lin Nuo expressed his apologies for his previous thoughts.
He and Mu Yiting were not the same kind of people.
They weren’t on the same wavelength at all.
He had asked her what was up with the night sky, and she said there was a moon.
Fine, she mentioned the moon, but then she said they should enjoy the moon together.
That kind of sweet lovey-dovey stuff was for couples, what did it have to do with him, a villain?
Lin Nuo instinctively wanted to pull his hand away from her arm, but Mu Yiting was surprisingly sensitive and held on tightly. With her strength, he couldn’t break free.
“What are you doing? We haven’t even held hands for that long.”
“We’re not on the same page, and I’m starting to feel a bit uncomfortable, so can you let go?”
“Come on, I was just making a little joke. You really have no sense of humor. I also noticed a fast-flying black bird in the sky, but with the darkness, I could only tell it was there.”
Mu Yiting let out a sigh, her previously teasing tone shifting back to her usual seriousness.
This guy, seriously! It’s a rare moonless night, and they’re walking hand in hand, yet he can’t say something fun to lighten the mood?
“Looks like you actually know something.”
After hearing Mu Yiting say that, Lin Nuo didn’t find her as annoying anymore. At least she wasn’t clueless about the black bird in the sky.
After all, being in the underworld, if you don’t have at least a bit of insight, you should go home and sell sweet potatoes, or you’ll definitely end up getting killed one day.
Besides, the underworld often uses such birds for spying and gathering information; they just don’t fly that high.
“I naturally know.”
Mu Yiting was a bit defiant; she felt that Lin Nuo looked down on her. Just because she didn’t say anything, it didn’t mean she was clueless:
“It’s flown by many times already. The issue is, it’s flying too high for me to confirm what it’s doing. I speculate it’s for reconnaissance.”
“Which organization does it belong to? Any leads?” Lin Nuo asked further.
“Can’t tell, no clue.”
Mu Yiting shook her head in response,
“In any case, it’s not an organization I’m familiar with. At that height, you’d need to fly up on a sword to catch a glimpse.”
“I don’t need to fly it down; don’t you remember your pigeon?”
Speaking of that messenger pigeon, Mu Yiting remembered how Lin Nuo had shot it down with a single blow, leaving her needing two or more pigeons, all while worrying if Lin Nuo would take them down as well.
“Now you’re making me mad! You focused on my messenger pigeon, and I even prepared some for you to roast and eat, and you went and shot it down.”
“Sorry, food isn’t interesting enough; shooting it down has a certain flavor.”
“So, if you’re so capable, why don’t you shoot it down yourself?”
“No need. I don’t know the origin of that black bird; if it has nothing to do with me, targeting it would just create unnecessary trouble.”
While Lin Nuo chatted with Mu Yiting, they encountered a cab driver trying to attract customers and figured they couldn’t be waiting around forever, so they decided to spend a little money to get a ride and head out.
“You two are so lovey-dovey; you must be a couple, right?”
The kind driver asked amiably. They were holding hands at this late hour, clearly a couple—no doubt about it.
“Just having an affair.”
Lin Nuo intentionally chimed in, leaving the driver quite embarrassed.
“Don’t listen to his nonsense; we are indeed a couple, absolutely for real.”
Mu Yiting quickly clarified. Lin Nuo was just rambling; saying something like “having an affair” sounded terrible.
“Oh…”
The driver realized something wasn’t quite right. It seemed he misjudged; this couple had a unique relationship. Worrying about triggering more awkwardness, he decided to keep his mouth shut.
The driver piloted the carriage down the designated path towards the city gate.
Mu Yiting pulled up the curtain, gazing at the bright moon in the night sky.
With the moon shining bright, it was the perfect time for longing.
She was busy and exhausted, unsure how her father was doing back home.
Now, with the family in turmoil, her power was diminishing. Even with Ling Meng of the Refining Demon Sect’s assistance, she felt like a guest with no status. If she wanted to rise, she had to break free.
However, without that strength, she was just going to remain mediocre.
She had to focus—first leave this city, deliver the items to Ling Meng, and then figure out the next step.
The carriage was moving quickly, but something faster was closing in on them.
Lin Nuo and Mu Yiting’s nerves tightened, becoming alert immediately.
“We seem to be followed.”
“Be confident; drop the ‘seem’.”
Lin Nuo readied himself. Though the carriage was moving at a decent speed, the pursuers were even faster, right nearby, able to scale walls and rooftops.
“Are they after you?” Lin Nuo asked.
“Yes, I didn’t expect them to track us here.” Mu Yiting said, “Sorry for dragging you into this. Stop the carriage now; you should leave, I’ll deal with them.”
“Don’t be a hero. You know your own level, right?”
Lin Nuo had already prepared his hidden weapons, but if he could avoid fighting, he would, to conserve energy.
“Do you have backup?”
“Yes, outside the city.”
“Then let’s get to the outskirts.”
Lin Nuo promptly patted the driver’s shoulder and said:
“Hey buddy, speed up! We’re having an affair, and they’re chasing us!”
“Brother, it’s late; I can’t really go faster.”
“How about now?”
Lin Nuo tossed out a bag full of coins, and the driver’s eyes lit up as he hurried to grab it.
Then he confidently declared:
“Alright, hold on tight; my carriage is the fastest in the city!”
He urged the horse on, and with the driver’s command, the horse galloped away, the sound of hooves echoing.
The driver raced through the streets, a shadow darting past, stirring up a gust of dust.
Lin Nuo felt the carriage was reliable, fast enough, and the driver was adept—even at high speeds, he still maneuvered like a pro.
As the carriage sped up, the pursuers fell behind, but they were not to be outdone and quickly caught up.
“Not enough, can you go faster? I can pay more.”
“Alright, hold on tight and enjoy the wind!”
The driver got excited; he was about to show off his racing skills. He pushed the horse’s speed to the max, and it truly felt like they were flying with the wind.
But then suddenly, a similarly fast carriage zoomed out from a side street.
“Don’t panic; just a little scene.”
The driver was brimming with confidence, executing a quick turn to avoid a collision.
That maneuver was extremely skillful; Lin Nuo couldn’t help but give him a perfect score.
A true expert from the mountain roads!
However…
Bang!
They flipped over.
The whole carriage, along with Lin Nuo and Mu Yiting, went tumbling out.
As for the driver and the horse?
They were out cold, defending their honor.
“What the… I overestimated him…”
Lin Nuo quickly stood up; thanks to his training, just a few scrapes didn’t mean much.
“You okay?”
“Nothing much.”
Mu Yiting hurriedly got up as well; they were fine, but the driver and the horse were down for the count.
The pursuers had caught up, three men dressed in black attire.
“What do we do now?” Mu Yiting asked.
“What can we do? Fight!”
