Chapter 29

That scene seemed indescribably shocking, but in reality, everything happened in complete silence. Those shocking images couldn’t be seen with the naked eye, and no one knew what had just occurred.

Gu Ning had inexplicably fainted and then naturally woke up.

When Gu Ning sat up from the bed, she felt a bit dazed, even forgetting how she had fainted. Those invisible green light spots had entered her body, converging into a vast sea, yet it seemed they hadn’t brought any noticeable changes.

Now, she only felt a raging hunger in her stomach, as if she could devour an entire cow.

“Gu Ning’s awake!” Cheng Ming, who happened to glance into the dormitory, exclaimed in surprise.

The five people in the corridor immediately crowded into the dormitory, surrounding Gu Ning and bombarding her with questions: “Gu Ning, are you feeling okay?”

“Does anywhere hurt or feel uncomfortable?”

“How did you faint?”

Though it was a bit noisy, the concerned eyes of everyone warmed Gu Ning’s heart, which had just woken up in a daze.

“Hey! Gu Ning’s eyes aren’t green anymore!” Zhang Yang exclaimed, staring at Gu Ning’s eyes in astonishment.

Everyone leaned in, staring for a moment before chiming in: “Hey, it’s true!” “They really aren’t green anymore.”

Gu Ning had no idea what they were talking about: “What are you all saying?”

Jia Daozhang, with the demeanor of an elder, quieted them down and explained to Gu Ning: “You suddenly fainted. Gao Yue checked you and said there’s nothing wrong with your body. But when we lifted your eyelids, we saw a greenish ring around your pupils. Now it’s gone.”

Gu Ning immediately thought of the green orb she had swallowed and felt a pang of worry. “Do you have a mirror?” she asked.

Zhang Yang took a small round mirror from the bed frame and handed it to Gu Ning.

Gu Ning held the mirror, first pulling down her lower eyelid a bit. Seeing no red blood vessels, she felt half of her worries dissipate, as it meant she wasn’t turning into a zombie. Then she began to examine her pupils.

If she hadn’t looked closely, it would have been hard to notice the faint green ring around her light-colored pupils. Strangely, Gu Ning didn’t feel much fear or unease about it. She knew clearly that the green in her eyes was definitely connected to the green orb she had swallowed, and it was likely a direct connection. But from the time she was bitten by a zombie to now, less than a week had passed, and yet her body had undergone so many changes.

Gu Ning now felt like she had so many lice that she didn’t feel the bites anymore, or so much debt that she didn’t worry about it.

Since she couldn’t change it and didn’t know why her body was changing, there was no point in overthinking it. She decided to set it aside and focus on more pressing matters.

She calmly handed the mirror back to Zhang Yang and asked, “How’s my dad?”

Cheng Ming replied, “The surgery was successful. Uncle Gu is asleep again.”

“Luckily he’s asleep. We didn’t disturb him, or he’d be worried sick knowing you fainted suddenly,” Jia Daozhang said, then suddenly changed the topic: “But there’s another issue, Gu Ning. We can manage with biscuits and sausages every day, but the two patients can’t keep eating like this, right?”

He raised a very practical concern.

For now, the supplies Gu Ning bought from the supermarket could last them a while. Gu Ning had been eating in the other world, saving a lot of supplies. But Jia Daozhang was right—they could make do, but Gu Ning’s parents were in poor health. After three months of constant fear, lack of sleep, and malnutrition, Gu Ning hadn’t noticed it much before, but compared to their peaceful world counterparts, the contrast was stark and painful for her.

They couldn’t let her parents keep eating bread and sausages every day.

Gu Ning suddenly asked, “Zhang Yang, what does Third Brother eat for meals?”

Zhang Yang said, “Third Brother eats the same as us. He often shares with the kids in the gathering place who have nothing to eat.” He then realized why Gu Ning had asked and added, “Our meals are poor. But White Wolf and that Boss Wang eat well. Boss Wang has a large enclosed yard in the family building where he keeps dozens of chickens! He also grows vegetables on the back hill. He has over ten people guarding it day and night, afraid someone might steal it.” He glanced at the door, making sure no one was there, then whispered, “Third Brother said we should find a good chance to snatch a few chickens and cook them for a treat.”

At the mention of Boss Wang, a cold glint appeared in Gu Ning’s eyes.

She had killed his nephew, and some of his men had also been killed by her.

This was equivalent to Gu Ning slapping Boss Wang in front of the entire gathering place—left cheek, right cheek, loud and clear!

This was an irreconcilable feud.

Unless one of them died, or one of them fled.

But Gu Ning couldn’t flee. Her parents’ condition wasn’t suitable for travel, and with Third Brother’s protection and the wall keeping the zombies out, she wasn’t planning to leave unless this place fell too.

If she couldn’t leave, then Wang Jizhong couldn’t leave either.

And since she didn’t want to die, Wang Jizhong had to die.

Thinking this, a flash of killing intent crossed Gu Ning’s eyes.

Gu Ning didn’t hide her murderous intent, and the people standing around her suddenly felt the temperature in the dormitory drop, sending chills down their spines.

The killing intent in Gu Ning’s eyes only lasted for a brief moment before returning to normal.

She suddenly remembered something, glanced at her watch, and saw it was past 4. She was startled and quickly got out of bed, saying as she walked out, “I need to go to the bathroom.”

She hurried out, leaving everyone in the dormitory stunned.

“Was she really asleep just now? She doesn’t seem like someone who just woke up from fainting,” Xie Yuhong whispered in the corner.

Everyone silently agreed.

Gu Ning was in such a hurry because she had been unconscious for three hours, and it was already 7:30 in the other world!

Her family always had dinner at 6 sharp.

If her mom called her for dinner and kept knocking without an answer, then broke the door down only to find Gu Ning had vanished from her bedroom, Gu Ning couldn’t even imagine the scene.

She ran to the women’s bathroom on this floor, but the stalls had no doors, just concrete partitions.

She had to run out of the dormitory building. It was getting dark, and Gu Ning thought of the small grove behind the sports field. Without hesitation, she ran in that direction.

Gu Ning knew she was quite “famous” in the gathering place, so to avoid drawing attention, she pulled her hat down to cover her distinctive blonde hair. She didn’t bring her long sword, only carrying two short knives at her waist.

Since Third Brother had made his stance clear, at least on the surface, Wang Jizhong wouldn’t dare touch her.

She walked up the slope.

But then she ran into someone coming down from the back sports field.

The person passed by her, catching a glimpse of blonde hair peeking out from under her hat, then suddenly stopped and asked in a slightly disdainful voice, “Are you that Gu Ning?”

Gu Ning paused, calmly turned to look, and was surprised to see this person here. She blurted out, “Yin Sang?”

The owner of the disdainful voice was none other than Yin Sang, whom Gu Ning had seen on TV and who had left a deep impression on her. It was such a vivid memory that Gu Ning could immediately recall her name.

Yin Sang was wearing a white martial arts uniform, her black hair tied up in a high ponytail. In person, she was even more striking than on TV.

Looking at her, Gu Ning couldn’t help but think of someone else—Zhuang Chen, who also had a striking appearance. In fact, Zhuang Chen might even be more beautiful than Yin Sang, though Gu Ning might be biased.

Hearing Gu Ning call her name, Yin Sang raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. “You know me?”

“I’ve seen your videos from the national martial arts competition,” Gu Ning said sincerely. “You’re amazing.”

Yin Sang snorted. Though she had some issues with Gu Ning, she couldn’t be too harsh in the face of genuine praise.

Gu Ning suddenly asked earnestly, “Can I ask you a question?”

Yin Sang raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“Where did you learn your combat skills?” Gu Ning asked.

“…” Gu Ning’s expression was so sincere that Yin Sang couldn’t even muster a sarcastic remark. She simply looked at Gu Ning expressionlessly and said, “I’ve been practicing martial arts since I was a child, for over a decade now. All those who taught me have been defeated by me. If you think killing a few people will make you like me, you’re being delusional.”

With that, she gave Gu Ning a cold look and walked down the slope toward the teacher’s building.

Gu Ning watched Yin Sang’s retreating figure, feeling utterly baffled.

Since she hadn’t gotten any useful information, it seemed her only option was to find a way into the military. With that thought, Gu Ning continued up toward the back sports field.

In the past, this time of day would see the back sports field bustling with students, but now it was eerily quiet. The vast open space was empty, with only Gu Ning standing there alone.

Gu Ning stood on the back sports field, gazing at the western horizon.

Perhaps because of the apocalypse, the sun was setting earlier each day. It was only 4 o’clock, but the sun already showed signs of sinking.

Gu Ning had a vague sense of foreboding.

She felt that one day, the sun would set and never rise again.
