Chapter 3

Arna could crush Shin Yoon-seong with a single punch. He was nothing more than a third-rate villain who didn’t stand a chance against her.

He might seem insignificant, almost like a piece of trash, but surprisingly, Shin Yoon-seong was a student in the Combat Division at Han-yul Military Academy.

There are various divisions at Han-yul Military Academy: Combat Division, Technical Division, Administrative Division, and Medical Division. Among them, the Combat Division is a group composed solely of Awakened individuals.

That’s right.

Shin Yoon-seong is an Awakened individual, which, in its own way, means he’s somewhat elite.

As an Awakened, magical power flows through his body. Even though his weapon is nothing more than a rather plain spoon, it still means he can wield this special ability.

It doesn’t matter whether the tool in question is a spoon or a spatula. As long as he can perform as an Awakened, that’s all that counts.

Enlargement. Clearly, beating an enemy with just a small spoon alone is simply impossible. Thus, this skill adjusts the size, transforming it into a proper weapon.

Let’s give it a try right away. I extended my hand toward the spoon in the drawer.

Sssswhh—

The once simple rice spoon began to emit a blue glow. It now looked less like a spoon and more like a magical wand.

Next.

Kaak!

Instead of staying tucked inside the drawer, the spoon burst out, piercing through the desk.

“Whoa….”

It had truly grown in size. It was now about the length of a hockey stick with a head nearly the size of a tennis racket.

Rather than a spoon, it now resembled some kind of blunt weapon. A hit with this would be quite painful.

Though…

“AAAAAHHH! My DESK!”

I inadvertently used the skill before even retrieving the spoon from the drawer, and as a result, the poor desk ended up broken.

What should I do now? Should I compensate for the desk?

Do I even have the money? Maybe I should borrow some from my family?

“Ah, that’s right.”

This guy didn’t have a mother.

Of course, he didn’t have a father either.

After the weekend passed, the weekday arrived.

The orphan Shin Yoon-seong, devoid of parental guidance, headed to the lecture hall to fulfill his student duties.

Truthfully, I had considered just abandoning being a hunter or a hero altogether and fleeing, but I couldn’t due to the cost of the desk.

Who would have guessed the desk was a Herman Miller? When I saw the price yesterday, I almost foamed at the mouth. A single desk costing upwards of a few hundred thousand won is just absurd, isn’t it? Isn’t it reasonable to stick to IKEA desks?

“Kick.”

Entering the lecture hall, several students burst into laughter at the sight of me, while others cast sympathetic glances.

It was probably because of the evaluation match against Arna over the weekend. I got KO’ed with a single punch. The incident was splashed all over the school’s community boards, so there were hardly any students left who didn’t know about it.

Honestly, none of that really bothered me.

What’s so embarrassing about losing to our protagonist, Arna? It’s completely natural, and thus it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

Instead, I’d probably get slightly offended if they mocked my balding head. That’s a sensitive issue.

By the way, the main character of Tyr One, Arna, was also in this lecture hall. Her stunning golden hair shone as brightly as ever.

“What? Is there something wrong?”

I confidently took my seat next to Arna. Instantly, she frowned.

“What’s that look for? Do I repulse you so much? You’re giving me the same glance as if you’d just spotted a cucumber in a rice roll.”

“B-but when did I…! And I like cucumbers, anyway!”

“What? You like cucumbers? You must be completely crazy.”

“Wh-what are you saying! You’ve finished speaking now…?”

At the sudden raise in volume, Arna startled and hastily covered her mouth.

After a brief pause and a moment where she stared intently at my face, Arna whispered softly.

“That… I’m sorry about your face… I didn’t mean to, but my fist just instinctively went out.”

Perhaps realizing it was harsh to land a direct punch on someone’s face, Arna apologized for what had happened during the evaluation.

Our hero has a kind heart.

“Thanks to you, some of my molars have cracked. I might struggle to chew squid from now on.”

“You…? Are you saying your teeth fell out?”

“Of course, it’s a lie.”

“But…”

However, I have quite the wicked heart. Maybe it’s in my nature to be a villain. This is kind of fun. Should I not get another quest? It feels like I could properly role-play Shin Yoon-seong.

“I should’ve just hit you even harder.”

Arna’s expression darkened as if regretting her worry earlier. She even shifted her seat, trying to create as much distance from me as possible.

Click—

Some time passed, then the lecture hall’s door opened. Instructor Kim Dong-hak, an elderly man with white hair, strode in.

“I’m about to start the lecture. Put your phones away.”

But the lecture didn’t begin immediately. A silence followed, and Kim Dong-hak pointed toward the back of the room.

“You there.”

In the very back seat, a student was still on their phone, ignoring the command, openly using it on top of the desk.

“Didn’t you hear me say to put your phone away?”

“What? You, someone from the Technical Division, think you can teach us now? You’re not even an Awakened!”

Not only did the student ignore the instructor’s orders, but they also muttered sarcastically under their breath.

That was blatant disrespect toward the instructor.

For your reference, this lecture hall was exclusively for Combat Division students, meaning it was occupied solely by Awakened individuals.

On the other hand, Instructor Kim Dong-hak was affiliated with the Technical Division, not an Awakened individual.

In the eyes of the high-and-mighty Awakened, Kim Dong-hak was merely a weak human.

“Put your phone away.”

It was at that moment Arna stood up. Unable to stand by while witnessing this unjustified superiority, she decided to intervene herself.

“Please.”

“Ugh….”

The words of Arna, a fellow Awakened and top student in the year, carried considerable weight.

The student eventually slinked away, having no choice but to put their phone away.

“Good. Let’s begin the class.”

Even though Kim Dong-hak had been disrespected by a much younger student, once the situation calmed down, he refrained from making any additional comments.

If I were him, I would’ve exploded with rage, questioning everyone there, but Kim Dong-hak appeared to have an exceptionally strong mental fortitude.

Perhaps this was not the first time such incidents had occurred?

“This lesson will cover Mutants. Open the linked data on your devices.”

Following the instructor’s command, students began taking out their tablets one by one.

What? A tablet? I didn’t bring one with me.

“Arna.”

“No.”

“But I haven’t even asked yet.”

Arna turned her body completely away from me.

That’s harsh. Even if you dislike me, you could share a tablet at least. What happened to fellow comradery within the Combat Division?

“Is everything alright?”

Having not taken out a tablet till the end, Instructor Kim Dong-hak asked me.

I decided to be honest.

“I left my tablet at home.”

“You left your tablet at home? Do you even intend to pay attention in class?”

“I’m sorry.”

“There’s nothing we can do about that. Perhaps you can share with someone else for this lesson.”

“Urgh…”

Nice. Actually, I’m fine with this.

Arna had no choice but to reduce the distance between us.

“Let’s proceed with the lesson. Page 3 of the data.”

On the tablet was a compilation of various monsters threatening the world. All familiar faces, since I had painstakingly brainstormed and created these creatures myself.

A long time has passed since the monsters first appeared. There are already 64 verified species of monsters, and the species below them, the lesser monsters, number far over 100.

Now began the part of the lecture that seemed to lack excitement. Most of the students rested their faces on their desks, falling asleep.

However, Arna beside me seemed perfectly alert. She was paying close attention to the lecture, her eyes sparkling, and occasionally nodded along with Kim Dong-hak’s teachings.

Despite creating her as my protagonist, she’s somewhat giving me the creeps. How is she handling this?

Ultimately, specific strategies for each species were discovered, creating a structured database, allowing us now to more easily suppress these monsters. However!

Bam!

Kim Dong-hak stomped his foot.

Unanticipated by the students dozing off, everyone immediately lifted their heads.

“You cannot rely only on data. Neither should you fight solely based on past experiences. We must always keep the mutants in mind.”

Finally, we moved on to the main topic.

Mutants. These are monsters that display patterns entirely different from recorded data. Rushing in blindly believing you know their tactics based on an identical appearance will result in an almost guaranteed failure.

“Showing rather than explaining might be faster. Hmm…”

Kim Dong-hak began scanning the entire lecture hall. Perhaps he was picking a representative student to demonstrate.

Please don’t be me.

“You there, the student who was on the phone earlier.”

You idiot. It’s probably your fault for showing off.

“Alright, and you too, the student who didn’t bring the tablet.”

My mood suddenly soured.

“Bring your respective equipment into the Sync Room.”

“Tch…”

The phone-abusing student clicked their tongue and picked up their Fold X. Though they acted reluctant, they might still be mindful of Arna’s presence.

In following, I also stood up, carrying my sole weapon—a spoon I had stashed in my pocket.

But…

Am I going to eat rice now?

This is extremely embarrassing…

As a director for the game Tyr One, I thought it’d be a great to create a gag character a super handsome man who uses only a spoon and annoys the protagonist at every turn. Get the female protagonist to wake up at 6am for a duel. Check Forget my tablet in class so I can annoy her more. Check I’m not doing this to torment the protagonist but for her own growth as part of my quests… Hair loss as a penalty has nothing to do with it.
