Chapter 282: Curse
“The Pharaoh’s curse?”
Upon seeing the words written by Hangzhi, Dorothy was slightly taken aback, then immediately realized that something was amiss. She wrote back right away.
“Could you explain in more detail what exactly happened?”
After finishing her writing, Dorothy watched as the words on the page gradually faded, and soon after, Neve’s words reappeared.
“I’m not quite clear about the current situation… I’m now riding home in a carriage with our butler. It’s inconvenient to write too much right now.”
Seeing Neve’s reply, Dorothy paused and immediately wrote back.
“In that case, stop writing for now. I’ll actively check your situation myself. Just don’t resist.”
Dorothy finished writing and closed the book “Navigation of the Literary Sea” on the desk, closing her eyes to link with Neve’s sensory perceptions through the information channel.
…
The moon rose higher, and the night deepened. The thick night had enveloped the vast capital city. Most households had extinguished their lights, leaving only the street lamps lining the roads still shining. The chilly autumn wind swept through the streets, and the only people around were homeless individuals huddled up and shivering.
In a spacious detached villa somewhere in East Tivyán, the lights were blazing. Inside the house, servants were bustling about, both inside and out. On the third floor, in a large bedroom, a big bed was set up. Lying on the bed was a middle-aged man.
This man had dark skin, a mustache, an unpleasant expression, wearing pajamas, covered by a blanket, looking completely unconscious. To his left on the bed were two anxious servants, while to his right was an even more anxious Neve, along with an elderly butler with gray hair and dark skin.
“Dad, wake up! Can you hear my voice? It’s Neve, Dad… I’ve come…”
Standing beside the bed, Neve held the man’s hand, her expression worried. However, the man lying on the bed showed no reaction at all, his eyes tightly shut, silent.
“It’s no use, Miss. Master has completely lost consciousness. He can’t hear anything now,” said the old butler seriously from the side. After hearing the old butler’s words, Neve immediately stood up and addressed him.
“Grandpa Nuster, what happened to my father? Not long ago, he sent me a letter, but now suddenly…”
Listening to Neve’s words, the old butler named Nuster couldn’t help but sigh deeply, then muttered:
“Ah… This might be fate, something we can’t escape…”
Sighing, Nuster glanced around and then spoke to the servants.
“It’s getting late, go back to rest.”
“Yes.”
Following Nuster’s words, the few servants who remained retreated. Then Nuster turned to Neve beside him.
“Miss, let’s talk about the details in the study.”
After hearing Nuster’s words, Neve nodded and followed him out of the bedroom, going up another floor to reach a study.
Inside the study, Nuster confirmed that no one else was outside before closing the door behind him. He then looked at Neve and continued.
“Miss, because of the old master’s instructions, I have been concealing many important matters related to you and your family. The old master originally wanted you and your father to stay away from danger, live safely, and normally. But fate is such that this matter cannot be hidden any longer…”
Nuster said this, and hearing his words, Neve felt a shock and had some premonitions.
“Nuster Grandpa, what did my grandfather ask you to conceal? Is this related to my father’s current condition? Is it related to the curse you mentioned earlier…”
Listening to Neve’s words, Nuster fell silent for a moment. He glanced at a portrait hanging on the wall of the study. In the portrait were two young men dressed in exploration clothing, carrying tools. One had dark skin, the other fair, both smiling at the camera. Behind them stood a tall, massive, but ruined pyramid.
“Miss, didn’t the old master tell you before that when he was young, he roamed in Northern Ufeiga and amassed wealth there by plundering ancient tombs and ruins, which is how the Boyle family came to have its current assets.”
Nuster said to Neve, who nodded in response.
“Yes, Grandpa used to tell me stories of his adventures when he was young. I grew up listening to those stories. Even now, I remember the dangerous traps and venomous snakes in the ancient tombs, and the bandits in the desert. Thinking about it now, it still feels very dangerous…”
Neve recalled, and Nuster continued looking at the old photo and speaking.
“Traps… venomous snakes… bandits… these are indeed dangerous, but they’re not the most dangerous. Miss, the old master wouldn’t tell you what the true fear buried under thousands of years of sand is… the extraordinary dangers from ancient times… far greater than these mundane dangers.”
“Extraordinary dangers from ancient times…”
“Yes, this may be beyond your understanding for now, but please remember, the world we see is far more complex than it appears. In those ancient tombs and ruins, my old master and I could more easily encounter horrifying things hidden beneath the surface of reality… things that exist only in legends.
“Undead… black magic… monsters… curses… these are the extraordinary threats that can be found under the sands of Northern Ufeiga. Even the most experienced explorers and tomb raiders would feel powerless against these threats. Among them, the one we fear the most is still the curse.”
“Curse… Could Dad have become like this because of a curse?” Neve speculated, and Nuster nodded directly.
“Yes, a curse… When exploring ancient tombs and ruins, people often trigger the ancient curses left behind without knowing when. These curses are warnings from the dead to the living, the harshest punishments for us greedy ones.
“In the ruins and tombs, we treasure hunters often unknowingly incur curses, perhaps by touching something we shouldn’t, entering a place we shouldn’t, saying something we shouldn’t, or doing something we shouldn’t. These… often attract unknown curses.
“The terrifying part of these curses is that they don’t take effect immediately, but rather suddenly manifest after returning home, tormenting the cursed person, causing mutations or d*ath. Even the most experienced treasure hunters can be infected by curses at any time and suffer greatly after returning home, ultimately dying or turning into monsters.”
Nuster said solemnly. Hearing Nuster’s words, Neve swallowed hard and thought for a moment before continuing.
“But if that’s the case, the only one who should be affected by the curse would be my grandfather. Dad has always been in Prit and has never been to Northern Ufeiga. How could he possibly have been cursed?”
