Chapter 283 – Family
Nephnis spoke to Nunut like this, listening to Nephnis’ words, Nunut paused and then nodded.
“Of course, Miss, you have the right to do so, but I still need to advise you, just look at these things, don’t get too obsessed with them, and certainly don’t think about delving deeper into their research, as this could easily bring great disaster.”
Nunut instructed Nephnis, and Nephnis nodded seriously.
“Mm, I will keep that in mind. So now, Grandfather Nunut, take me down to the basement to see.”
Nephnis said like this. After repeated requests from her, Nunut had no choice but to comply, and they both left the study, descending the stairs downstairs, with Nephnis closely following behind.
Soon, Nunut brought Nephnis to a storage room on the first floor. Here, Nunut triggered a mechanism hidden behind a portrait, and the wall of the storage room opened, revealing a staircase leading downwards. Nunut carried a gas lamp and walked down the stairs, followed by Nephnis, who curiously observed the surroundings. This was her first time entering the secret part of her home.
Soon, the downward staircase reached its end. Nunut and Nephnis stood before an iron door. Nunut unlocked the iron door with a key and entered an underground room, lighting a gas lamp inside.
The light illuminated the dim space, allowing Nephnis to see the scene within. This was a rather small underground space, with the room being quite spacious. On the ground in the center, there was a large magical array made of rock. The main body of the array was a closed eye, and at the center of the pupil, there was a stone pedestal. On top of the pedestal, there was a metal scepter.
This scepter was nearly as tall as a person, made of dark yellow metal, but it was impossible to tell what kind of metal it was just by looking at its color. The scepter was engraved with intricate runes, and at the top, there was a winged eagle decoration. The entire scepter was exquisitely crafted; just looking at its exterior made it clear that it was a highly valuable work of art.
“This… is the extraordinary item that has protected our family from curses for so many years?”
Looking at the scepter before her, Nephnis murmured, and Nunut nodded in response.
“Yes, this is one of the most precious treasures acquired by the old master in Northern Ufeiga. It’s a scepter with the ability to resist curses. This thing has protected the old master and the entire Boyle family for decades, but now it lacks the spirituality needed to sustain its operation, so its effectiveness is gradually diminishing.”
Nunut replied. Listening to his words, Nephnis nodded and stepped forward, approaching the scepter embedded in the stone pedestal, examining it closely.
‘According to Miss Dorothyia, the missing spirituality called ‘Enlightenment’ that this item lacks, although very precious outside, is not much to the Rosy Cross, which studies ‘Enlightenment’. We both have some ‘Enlightenment’ in our bodies, and all we need to do is inject it.’
Recalling the information Dorothy had written to her, Nephnis thought to herself. Through her recent efforts in “learning,” she had read three or four secret transmissions and extracted quite a bit of “Enlightenment.” Following Dorothy’s advice, she could now inject this “Enlightenment” into the scepter to restore its full functionality.
Without hesitation, Nephnis placed her hand gently on the scepter and began injecting her own “Enlightenment” spirituality into it, following the method taught in Dorothy’s book. Immediately, the scepter on the stone pedestal emitted a faint purple glow. Seeing this, Nunut, who had been watching from behind, couldn’t help but be startled and widened his eyes in disbelief.
“What? This is…”
Having taken care of the scepter for decades, Nunut naturally understood what this situation meant—it was accepting spirituality!
“How is this possible? There are clearly no storage items here… how can there be spirituality being injected? Could it be…”
With an incredulous expression, Nunut looked at Nephnis standing before the scepter. Just as he was about to speak, something unexpected happened.
Suddenly, the lights in the underground chamber flickered, and the surrounding light dimmed without warning. The temperature in the secret room dropped several degrees, and a cold chill suddenly crept up Nephnis’ spine.
‘This…’
Nephnis felt something amiss. Injecting spirituality into extraordinary items shouldn’t cause such a reaction. Just as she was confused, a voice echoed.
“Don’t think you can hide behind that cowardly shelter anymore! Boyle!”
A sharp, raspy voice, akin to scratching a chalkboard, suddenly rang out in the secret room, startling everyone inside. Accompanying the voice, a shadowy figure gradually materialized in the dim room.
It was a withered, semi-transparent figure, a towering mummy completely drained of moisture. The mummy wore solemn robes adorned with luxurious gold pendants, and on its head was a crown decorated with a cobra. Its withered face had no moisture, and green flames flickered in its black eye sockets.
“Aaah!!”
“Be careful, Miss!”
The sudden appearance of the mummy’s shadow startled Nephnis, causing her to release the scepter and step back several steps, letting out a loud scream. Seeing this, Nunut immediately pulled out a kn*fe inscribed with runes from his waist and threw it at the shadow. However, the kn*fe passed right through the shadow.
‘Is this… not a physical form, nor a spirit body… just a simple illusion?’
Seeing this, Nunut thought to himself. At this moment, the mummy’s shadow spoke again, and the voice wasn’t in the Prit language, yet everyone present could understand it.
“Davis Boyle, insignificant… despicable… shameless thief! You must pay for your actions, even if you d*e and return to your original soul, your bloodline will bear the cost! Don’t think you can hide forever!”
With a roar-like tone, the mummy’s shadow shouted loudly in the secret room. Hearing its words, Nephnis roughly understood that this might be the embodiment of the so-called curse. The pressing matter now was to continue injecting ‘Enlightenment’ into the scepter to restore its optimal state to resist the curse.
Thinking this way, Nephnis immediately moved forward to grab the scepter again, but just as she took a step, a wave of weakness swept over her body, and her consciousness began to blur, making her feel extremely weak.
Thus, the weakened Nephnis fell to the ground, while the mummy’s shadow continued shouting.
“Don’t think you can hide behind cowardly shelters anymore. I won’t let this opportunity slip! All Boyles must d*e! This time, your souls will be eternally enslaved to me, and you won’t be able to return to your origins!”
The mummy’s shadow shouted, directly targeting Nephnis with the curse to prevent any further protection from being activated.
