Chapter 301: Contact
On the eastern side of the Royal Sacred Crown University in Tivyán, in the Green Shade Town.
In the afternoon, the rare autumn sunshine bathed the streets of Green Shade Town. On the balcony of house number 17, Dorothy, dressed in loose white home clothes with her hair scattered, sat on a chair. After several days of gloomy weather, she finally came out to bask in the sun, otherwise, she felt like she was going to mold inside.
In front of Dorothy lay a thick book, next to which were a steaming cup of coffee and a small cake. The book recorded the conversations between Dorothy and others, which was the “Navigation of the Literary Sea.”
Dorothy added a large spoonful of sugar to the coffee in the cup, stirring it slowly with a spoon. Once it was well stirred, she placed the spoon beside the plate with the small cake and then picked up the coffee cup to savor it slowly.
Basking in the warm sunlight, Dorothy felt the tranquility around her as she read the new words that appeared in the “Navigation of the Literary Sea.” After careful examination, she put down the coffee cup and picked up a pen to write a reply.
“So you’ve started working at the hospital now?” Dorothy wrote on Vania’s communication page, watching the words sink into the book. After waiting quietly for a while, Vania’s reply appeared in her handwriting.
“Yes, Miss Dorothyia. Since almost everyone from the Historical Records Office has been sent to cure poison recognition, we are not allowed to return to our posts until a full recovery. Therefore, the entire church’s Historical Records Office is paralyzed. Having just been promoted to Black Tier, I temporarily have no job, so I was assigned to Avler Mercy Hospital. Here, my ability as a Healing Priest can be of some use.”
Vania explained her current situation to Dorothy in the “Navigation of the Literary Sea,” mentioning that after her promotion, due to a lack of positions, she seemed to have been transferred to the church hospital.
“Does this mean your work location will change to there, becoming a doctor nun, and not working in the Church District anymore?” Dorothy continued writing her response in the “Navigation of the Literary Sea.” As the words sank, Vania’s notes reappeared after a patient wait.
“No, I’m only temporarily helping out there. There are professional physician nuns there. Although my abilities can help, I am merely an intern here for a short time. If a more suitable position comes up or if the Historical Records Office returns to normal, I might be reassigned. I still live in the Church District, and this is just a temporary position at the hospital.”
Vania responded, and seeing her reply, Dorothy nodded slightly, understanding the situation.
‘Vania was promoted temporarily due to her merits, and for now, there is no suitable position for her, so she was assigned to the hospital as an intern based on her abilities… But this is only temporary. From what she says, she should be reassigned to a more suitable position later. I hope it’s back at the Historical Records Office, where she could access the church’s secret transmissions.
‘And when the Historical Records Office returns to normal, Vania would likely return as a middle-ranking official of the Black Tier. This means she would probably take over Kock’s position managing the Historical Records Office. If Vania becomes the head of the Historical Records Office, obtaining the church’s secret transmissions would be much easier!’
Dorothy thought to herself and wrote her thoughts to Vania, asking if it could happen. After a moment’s pause, Vania replied.
“Indeed, Kock is a middle-ranking official of the Black Tier. If I return to the Historical Records Office, I would most likely take over his position. However, this means… For the church, two problematic people have held the position of Head of the Historical Records Office in a row. Both Vania and Kock have secrets that the church forbids. Miss Dorothyia, honestly, this makes me feel a bit uneasy…”
Vania responded to Dorothy, and just by reading her words, Dorothy could sense Vania’s unease. Comparing herself to Kock, the traitor, she realized they both had hidden major secrets from the church, which made Vania feel guilty.
Seeing Vania’s reply, Dorothy was momentarily stunned, then decided to help guide Vania. She picked up her pen and wrote in the “Navigation of the Literary Sea.”
“No, you shouldn’t think that way, Vania. Although you may have concealed something from above, you never harmed the church’s interests; in fact, you helped the church fight heretics and clear threats. How could you compare yourself to Kock, who attempted to use poison to harm subordinates and plotted against the church?
“You don’t need to worry about this. Think about it, if it weren’t for your secret from Akka, you wouldn’t have discovered Kock’s issues. The church might have suffered immeasurable losses. You haven’t betrayed the church; you’re merely protecting it in your own way.
“This kind of protection is bound to be misunderstood, although it carries risks, someone must do it. Otherwise, Kock’s schemes would succeed. Didn’t the Holy Son teach us that each believer needs the courage and spirit of sacrifice to protect the faith in their own unique and misunderstood way? So, Vania, you don’t need to be confused. Just continue doing your work well.”
Dorothy wrote these comforting words in the “Navigation of the Literary Sea.” When Vania, the nun, saw them while resting in the lounge, she was taken aback and murmured.
“Protecting the church in my own way…?”
Seeing Dorothy’s words, Vania was deeply moved and felt that it was indeed so. Reflecting on it, all her actions under Akka’s will were acts of rescue. Though her actions violated regulations, they truly eliminated threats and reduced losses for the church.
“Yes… As Miss Dorothyia said, the Holy Son taught us to have the spirit of sacrifice for the sake of protecting the church. Protecting the church in secret, isn’t that also a form of sacrifice…”
With this thought, Vania suddenly felt more noble. The idea of “protecting the church alone in one’s own unique way” gave her a sense of fulfillment. Her previous unease diminished significantly, and she felt a renewed sense of purpose. With psychological comfort, she sighed deeply and wrote back to Dorothy.
“Thank you, Miss Dorothyia, for your guidance. I am ashamed, as a nun, I needed you to guide me with the contents of the Sacred Text. Your words enlightened me, and I feel much clearer now.
“Your wisdom, Miss Dorothyia, is admirable. I will follow your advice and focus on my current work. If there is anything important, please notify me.”
On the balcony of house number 17 in Green Shade Town, Dorothy nodded as she read Vania’s response, a look of satisfaction on her face. She thought, thankfully, this child was simple and easy to persuade.
