Chapter 301: Contact
Then, Dorothy spoke to Vania in a comforting tone, and after further understanding her recent situation, concluded this communication.
Every so often, Dorothy would communicate with her contacts, the “members” of the Rosy Cross, to understand their situations. They were also eager to chat with Dorothy, the only person they knew to be part of the “upper ranks” of the Rosy Cross. On one hand, they wanted to learn about the Rosy Cross, and on the other hand, they liked to seek answers from Dorothy when they encountered problems, just like earlier.
After comforting Vania, Dorothy began to flip through the航志, reviewing recent communications with others and mentally organizing the updates on each contact.
‘Nephnis has been learning the Secret Transmission while trying to familiarize herself with her abilities. She wants to practice in haunted places, so she has been searching through the library’s newspapers for some haunted locations to explore, but she has struck out several times.
‘Overall, any clearly haunted incidents in Tivyán should have already been handled by the An Yin Bureau, so the likelihood of finding real ghosts by following ghostly rumors is slim. Poor Nephnis, although she has been promoted to an Extraordinary Being, has yet to experience her abilities even once.’
Looking at the page of communication with Nephnis, Dorothy thought to herself that if a medium couldn’t find spirits, wouldn’t that make them no different from an ordinary person? Nephnis had directly complained to Dorothy in the航志 about not feeling any different since her promotion to an Extraordinary Being; her daily life still felt like that of an ordinary person, without any change.
After finishing with Nephnis’s page, Dorothy flipped to Kapak’s communication page. Since Kapak was very eager to learn and often asked Dorothy questions, there was a lot of writing on his page.
‘Kapak has begun learning shamanic knowledge under the tribe’s shaman. According to the Old Shaman, once Kapak accumulates enough spirituality, he will perform a ceremony for him to truly become a Shaman Apprentice.
‘Based on the nature of shamans, it’s likely that Kapak will become an Extraordinary Being in the domain of “Silence,” similar to Neph. However, it seems that the extraordinary system in the New World is somewhat different, and even if Kapak becomes an Extraordinary Being of “Silence,” it may differ from Neph’s status as a medium.
‘Additionally, after long-term observation, the Old Shaman of their tribe has officially allowed Kapak to promote various modern technologies and items within the tribe, including medicine. With the Old Shaman’s support, Kapak, with modern medical expertise, can finally treat the tribe’s ailments without restraint. His status within the tribe has quickly risen, though this has also sparked significant discontent among some conservatives… The tension seems to be escalating; I hope nothing unfortunate happens as a result.’
Dorothy thought this and began flipping through the航志 again. This time, she landed on a page with relatively few communications, belonging to Anna.
‘Anna has been busy lately learning noble etiquette and related knowledge to prepare for fully inheriting the family wealth after reaching adulthood. Currently, the Field family’s wealth is managed by a third-party financial institution overseen by the Church. Although Anna is the primary heir, her youth prevents her from managing this wealth outright.
‘I’m not sure if enabling Anna to become an Extraordinary Being of “Enlightenment” and quickly completing all relevant courses would allow her to inherit the wealth sooner. However, this would likely raise suspicion from both the An Yin Bureau and the Church… So, I need to be more cautious.’
Dorothy pondered this, feeling a bit regretful after her plan to invent the internal combustion engine fell through. She had temporarily shelved her grand money-making plan; now Anna was the future financial pillar she anticipated, yet being just a child, Anna was unable to fully manage her family’s wealth.
After reading Anna’s communication page, Dorothy felt a hint of disappointment. Just as she was about to continue flipping through the航志, she noticed a new handwriting on one of the pages—an elegant script that hadn’t been there before.
“Good afternoon, Detective. I have already found a document about the teacher and have sent it to you. The memories of the teacher are very muddled in my mind; I need some time to organize and clarify the hiding places of these documents. Furthermore, I’m currently facing some troubles, so the next piece of information may take some time to send.”
Dorothy gazed at the new handwriting on the page, recognizing it as belonging to Adele. When they part ways that day, Dorothy had given her a contact text for future communication, and now she had already sent a message.
“Okay, I understand. I will keep an eye out for it. By the way, what kind of trouble are you facing? Is it difficult?”
Dorothy replied to Adele, using a tone of relative equality. Unlike her communications with others, which had a slightly superior tone, Dorothy treated Adele as a partner rather than a subordinate. Adele was, after all, an Extraordinary Being of the White Chalk Tier, a collaborator of the Rosy Cross, not a member.
“It concerns issues from the Radiant Church. It’s not really troublesome, just a hassle, Detective; you don’t need to worry about me.” Soon, Adele responded, and Dorothy felt a bit surprised after reading her words.
“The Radiant Church? Do you have a relationship with them?”
“It’s a significant relationship. The Holy Mother sect of the Radiant Church is our Scarlet Heart’s concealed protector and supporter. They have been secretly backing us against the Wolf bl**d Association; otherwise, why do you think the Wolf bl**d Association hasn’t attacked us head-on like they did to the Joyful Dance Association? It’s precisely because of the deterrent power supplied by the Church that they dare not behave as they used to.
“And they have also taken note of the incident in the Coal Ash District a few days ago. They know about my abilities and are currently sending people to inquire about the situation, so I’ve been spending quite some effort dealing with them lately.”
Adele’s words gradually came into view on the page before Dorothy. Reading these sentences, Dorothy absentmindedly stroked her chin.
Dorothy had long considered that the Wolf bl**d Association had systematically annihilated countless “Cup” societies; how could they choose to employ sneaky tactics against the Scarlet Heart, a coalition formed by survivors from their grasp? There must be some powerful force behind the scenes pressuring the Wolf bl**d Association, resulting in this behavior. However, she hadn’t expected that the force supporting the Scarlet Heart was actually the Radiant Church. Moreover, it was specifically the Holy Mother sect that was involved.
‘This is quite interesting… At present, the Holy Mother seems to be the deity favoring “Lamp” and assisting “Cup.” Now that the Holy Mother sect is actively interfering in the conflicts between the “Cup” societies, it appears they want to help the Scarlet Heart stand against the Wolf bl**d Association and its amniotic sects. What could their motives be?’
Dorothy thought, perceiving from this particular snapshot that the people within the Radiant Church, especially those from the Holy Mother sect, seemed to harbor wariness and hostility toward the amniotic sects. Was there perhaps the will of a deity imbuing this situation?
