Chapter 303: Slumber
In the southwestern part of the Prit Kingdom lies Igewent.
In the afternoon, the entrance of Igewent Railway Station was bustling with people. Gregor, dressed in a dark gray coat and wearing a small hat, stood among the crowd. In his hand, he carried a large suitcase, and before him were two familiar faces.
“Haha, I never thought you, this little black dog, could be promoted to the General Bureau after just over a year at the station. I’ve been here for more than three years now, and still stuck in this mess. It’s really disheartening to see people rise so quickly…”
Standing in front of Gregor, the robust man Turner complained, while a simple-dressed woman next to him gave him a stern look and spoke.
“What’s all this talk about ‘black dog’… Be mindful of your current identity, Captain Turner. You’re not only insulting us but yourself.”
Elena said, and Turner continued with a twisted mouth.
“Hey, I’ve gotten used to it. Besides, this guy has such good luck; calling him a black dog doesn’t matter, right? What do you think, Gregor? Hahaha…”
Punching Gregor on the shoulder, Turner laughed heartily, and Gregor smiled and replied.
“Elena, Turner, thank you for coming to see me off.”
“It’s only natural. After all, we’re colleagues. We’ve gone through many things together in the past year or so. To be honest, I’m still a bit reluctant,” Elena said with a smile, while Turner continued.
“Oh, there’s no need to be sad. Think positively—If Gregor does well at the General Bureau and gets a good position, don’t we have connections there too? Maybe one day he’ll pull us along as well.”
“Tsk, now is not the time for jokes. Just got promoted to the General Bureau, how fast can we expect changes in personnel? Isn’t it better to say goodbye properly?”
Elena continued addressing Turner, who finally waved his hand and responded.
“Alright, alright, Brother Gregor, then I wish you a safe journey.”
“Yeah, have a safe trip, Gregor. Remember to write often once you get there,” Elena nodded and said to Gregor, who also smiled in response.
“Of course, we’ll keep in touch via letters. Well, it’s getting late, and I should board the train now. Please give my regards to Mr. James.”
With that, Gregor waved goodbye to Elena and Turner, then turned around and walked towards the station with his luggage, merging with the crowd entering the station.
Smiling, Gregor quickly passed through the ticket check and arrived at the platform. A steam locomotive was already parked at the edge of the platform. Looking at the long steel giant before him, Gregor couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy.
“Finally… Tivyán, I’m coming.”
Gregor muttered, lately he had frequently entered dreams to hunt spirituality with a little fox he had met by chance in the Dream Realm. Although the little fox wasn’t particularly strong in terms of shape-shifting, it was very familiar with the Dream Realm, more so than anyone Gregor had previously encountered. During this time, the little fox took charge, while Gregor acted as the enforcer, hunting spirituality at the edges of the dragon territory. They soon accumulated enough spirituality for a promotion.
Now, he had finished all his business in Igewent and was ready to head to the capital, Tivyán.
Quickly, Gregor carried his luggage toward the steam train, not joining the crowd pushing into the middle and rear second and third-class carriages. Instead, he went directly to the first-class carriage at the front of the train. With his financial means, he could afford to ride in the first-class section.
Approaching the not-so-crowded first-class carriage, Gregor handed his ticket to a young attendant standing at the door. The attendant, dressed in uniform and wearing a cap, immediately saluted and smiled.
“Good day, sir. May I see your ticket, please?”
Listening to the attendant, Gregor took out a ticket from his pocket and handed it over. The young attendant checked the information, especially the handwritten name, and immediately smiled back at Gregor.
“Ahh, Mr. Gregor Orus Meyshos, your compartment is number eight, located towards the rear of this carriage. Let me help you with your luggage.”
Returning the ticket to Gregor, the attendant smiled. Gregor put away the ticket and nodded.
“Thank you for your trouble.”
Then, Gregor handed his luggage to the attendant, who immediately picked it up and walked into the carriage. Guided by the attendant, Gregor arrived at his compartment. The attendant opened the door, and Gregor entered.
“Please wait inside, sir. The train will depart shortly. If you need meals, the dining car is in the next carriage, providing delicious dinners exclusively for first-class passengers. Have a pleasant journey.”
After placing Gregor’s luggage, the attendant said as usual. Gregor smiled in response.
“Thank you, you’ve done well.”
“This is what I’m supposed to do, sir.”
The attendant bowed one last time, stepped out of the compartment, closed the door, and walked down the aisle. Halfway, he suddenly turned back, glanced at Gregor’s compartment, and then decisively turned forward again.
Soon, all the passengers boarded the train, and the attendant closed all the doors. The steam locomotive started, its whistle echoing. Thick black smoke billowed from the locomotive’s chimney, and the iron wheels slowly rolled amidst the steam, propelling the massive vehicle forward. The train began to accelerate, gradually leaving the station.
Back in the compartment, Gregor finally sat down and breathed a sigh of relief. As the train jolted, he looked out the window at the scenery flying backward. He gazed at the city where he had lived for over a year, feeling a wave of nostalgia. He looked forward to his future life in Tivyán with even greater anticipation.
Thinking about how he would soon achieve his promotion and reunite with his only sister, his mood was incredibly joyful.
‘Wait for a surprise, Dorothy. Your big brother is finally coming.’
Gregor thought, now curious about how Dorothy had been doing in Tivyán these past few months. He wondered if she had faced hardships or been bullied.
‘I carefully considered the amount I sent to Dorothy. While it was plenty in Igewent, Tivyán has much higher costs. I wonder if it’s enough. Though I fear giving her too much might make her careless with money, what if I didn’t give her enough before…
‘But her previous responses didn’t mention anything about money, so it should be fine. I just hope she isn’t worried about my burden and won’t hesitate to tell me if she needs more.’
Gregor thought, if Dorothy truly struggled in Tivyán due to insufficient funds, he would surely feel guilty.
‘No matter what, I can finally stop worrying about her being alone in Tivyán. No longer will I constantly worry about what might happen to her.’
Gregor concluded, then leaned back on the sofa in the compartment and picked up the newspaper he had prepared, ready to pass the time during the boring journey.
Time flew by, as the train continued its journey, leaving the city behind and crossing the wilderness. The sun in the sky gradually sank, and eventually, daylight faded, night fell. The gas lamps in each carriage lit up one by one, transforming the daytime environment into nighttime aboard the moving train.
