Chapter 309: Awakening
Within the train speeding through the night, in the cramped compartment, Dorothy was manipulating Gregor’s body as he conversed with a man affiliated with the Eight Pinnacle Nest. Under the guise of Black Earth Tier member Adeline from the Eight Pinnacle Nest, and under the influence of “The Queue of the Queen,” the man had no doubt about the identity of the “Mr. Adeline” before him. Watching this scene, a smile involuntarily appeared on Dorothy’s lips.
“It seems that Gregor can turn this crisis into an opportunity.”
For Dorothy, Gregor’s encounter on the train was a significant chance. She didn’t just want to extract valuable information from this small fry; if she could have Gregor replace Adeline and become a spy embedded within the Eight Pinnacle Nest, the intelligence he could gather would be immensely valuable.
When dealing with Adeline’s assassin corpse, Dorothy found no extraordinary items aside from the dissolution sigil. Initially, she thought this guy was poor, but a conversation between Gregor and the little fox in her dream reminded her.
After arriving at Tivyán, Gregor would be directly taken from the station to the headquarters for basic checks, which might include inspecting personal belongings. Therefore, Adeline couldn’t carry any extraordinary items or sigils while disguised to avoid being discovered.
This raised a problem: as a spy, Adeline wouldn’t be able to use extraordinary means to contact his society once in Tivyán due to the lack of such items. Without a means of communication, a spy couldn’t effectively transmit intelligence back. Thus, after the inspection, the Eight Pinnacle Nest would arrange a secret meeting to provide Adeline with the necessary tools for contacting his society and to learn about his inspection results, ensuring he passed.
Dorothy anticipated this and deliberately had Gregor mention that the inspection time might be extended, suggesting a change in the meeting time and location. Initially, she didn’t know the original time and location.
After completing these operations, Gregor could smoothly reconnect with the Eight Pinnacle Nest after passing the An Yin Bureau’s inspection. Then, he could gather intelligence from both sides.
“Alright, I should return to my own compartment now. Make sure to put everything away.”
In the compartment, after Dorothy manipulated Gregor to say a few more words, he slowly stood up from the sofa, patted the suitcase on the table, and said. The man respectfully nodded in response.
“Yes, Mr. Adeline, I will keep the items safe.”
“Hmm… Also, my current identity is Gregor Rhos Mysheos. On the surface, we are strangers with no connection. So during our journey, don’t approach me. Just wait for the arranged meeting later.” Gregor continued, and the man nodded without objection.
With a respectful gaze, Gregor opened the compartment door and walked back to his own compartment. After opening the door and sitting on the sofa, Dorothy stopped manipulating Gregor.
In the Dream Space, seeing his body finally stop, the true Gregor, who had been in the form of a black dog, couldn’t help but speak.
“Sir Detective! Why didn’t you directly interrogate him for clues instead of making things so complicated? His strength and status are clearly lower than that of the assassin named Adeline. We should have been able to capture him easily. Even if we couldn’t get much out of him, we could still control him and bring him to Tivyán for the bureau.”
In the Dream Space, the black dog form of Gregor questioned, having remained silent earlier because the detective was controlling his body to negotiate with the other party.
“He’s at most an apprentice. Even if we caught him, we wouldn’t get much valuable intelligence… It’s better to let him think he’s still free and continue interacting with him as Adeline. This way, we can gather more intelligence about his society.”
New text appeared in front of Gregor in the Dream Space. He read it and immediately responded.
“Well… I kind of understand what you mean… You mean I can infiltrate their society in reverse, but I’m not good at lying… I’ve only been a Hunter for a year, with no experience in undercover work. If I’m discovered, it’ll be trouble…”
Gregor continued, somewhat anxious. Although the mysterious detective had helped him greatly, assigning him a spy role without his consent left him unsure how to proceed.
To Gregor’s concerns, Dorothy responded lightly.
“No worries. If you’re not confident in your improvisation skills, you can silently pray to Akka for my help. As long as you have the mark and don’t resist, I can regain control of your body through Akka and handle them for you.”
Dorothy responded to her brother, implying that if he lacked confidence in his acting skills, she would take over. Seeing the text, Gregor’s expression turned strange.
“Well… Is that possible? Indeed, if they believe I am Adeline, they could provide more intelligence… Hmm… If you can really help me to this extent, it’s worth a try. Let me report the situation on the train to the bureau in Tivyán, then let the higher-ups decide.”
After some thought, Gregor decided to report to the An Yin Bureau in Tivyán first and let his superiors make the decision. However, Dorothy immediately stopped him.
“No, you cannot reveal tonight’s information on the train to the Tivyán bureau at all.”
New text appeared in front of Gregor, and his eyes showed surprise.
“Why? If personnel assigned to the bureau are attacked and attempt infiltration, this is important intelligence!”
“Yes, it is important, but have you considered, Mr. Hunter, why these people knew you were going to the bureau at this time? How did they know your name, appearance, rank, and even the train number?”
Dorothy responded to Gregor’s new text, and the black dog form of Gregor froze, stunned. The little fox beside Gregor replied.
“This must be because there’s a traitor in the Black Dog bureau. They probably leaked your information.”
The little fox wagged its tail and spoke sarcastically, indicating that there must be a mole in the bureau leaking Gregor’s information. Given the abundance of anti-divination resources at the An Yin Bureau, the likelihood of Gregor’s information being divined was low, so it was more likely someone had leaked internal information.
“Yes… They know my information so thoroughly. There’s a high chance there’s another traitor in the bureau. If I report the situation on the train, the mole inside might find out, and the entire undercover plan would fail… Not only would we not succeed, but I might even be marked and targeted.”
Realizing this, Gregor widened his eyes and muttered. Dorothy’s further response appeared before him.
“Exactly. If you report, the enemy might get the information through the mole in the bureau and realize the plan on the train has failed. Our undercover operation won’t succeed, and you might even be marked, becoming a priority target.
“But if you don’t report, the mole in the bureau won’t know the real situation on the train. They might mistakenly think you are the real Adeline and consider you a spy attempting to infiltrate the An Yin Bureau. They might secretly try to contact you later. At that point, you could identify the spy within the bureau and help the An Yin Bureau eliminate the threat. Isn’t this a greater contribution to the An Yin Bureau?”
