Chapter 320: Devotion
The werewolf roared at Vania furiously, and after Vania jumped in shock and trembled all over, she regained her composure and replied.
“I follow the teachings of the Holy Mother, treating every life equally and with kindness, always forgiving. Mr. Davik was in danger and close to d*ath before me, I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. Moreover, my mission this time is to ensure Mr. Davik’s safety…”
Vania said with a devout posture to the werewolf. The werewolf was taken aback upon hearing this and then responded with a counter-question.
“The teachings of the Holy Mother? Hmph, are you really here risking your life for this? To save someone who might k*ll you?”
“Of course, after all, if I hadn’t saved him just now, someone would have died needlessly…”
Still with a hint of panic, Vania covered her chest and said with a devout tone. The werewolf sneered upon seeing this and then spoke with interest.
“Hmph… There are still Holy Mother believers as devout as this in the world. Interesting…”
Just as the werewolf muttered, Davik cried out in pain again.
“Aaah… It hurts… It hurts so much…”
“Please bear with it, Mr. Davik, I will help you treat it.”
Saying this, Vania continued to stretch out her hand to stabilize Davik’s injuries. After his wound was once again bathed in orange light, Davik’s expression eased up. He turned his head to look at the werewolf and continued weakly.
“Mmm… Haa… Mr. Smith… My current situation is very bad; without treatment, I won’t last long. So, for now, let’s spare the nun’s life. Also… this nun actually has some value to us…”
“Value? What kind of value?”
“Cough, cough… This is a long story, but there’s no time now. When we reach a safe place, I’ll explain slowly.”
Davik struggled to tell the werewolf, who paused slightly at the scene before him, hesitating for a moment before making a decision.
“Let’s discuss treatment when we’re in a safe place. The black dogs could arrive at any moment; we shouldn’t stay here.”
The werewolf said this, then shifted his gaze to Davik’s handcuffs and ordered his subordinates behind him.
“Use the Radiance Lamp to check them; confirm there are no traces and take them all away!”
Following the werewolf’s words, the men standing before the beastmen immediately approached. One of them took out a Radiance Lamp from his bag, lit it, and shone it on Vania and Davik. At this moment, Dorothy suppressed her control over Davik, making him close his eyes and collapse, to avoid the detection of the extraordinary effect of the living puppet. In others’ eyes, it seemed that Davik closed his eyes due to the light from the Radiance Lamp.
The werewolf’s subordinates used the Radiance Lamp to detect any extraordinary effects on Vania and Davik. Since Dorothy had foreseen they would encounter a Radiance Lamp before coming to the An Yin Bureau, she had Vania leave the Sacred Text at the hospital, ensuring Vania carried no extraordinary items and was not in a living puppet state. Naturally, Vania passed the detection easily. However, when the lamp was shone on Davik, it unexpectedly detected an extraordinary effect.
The werewolf’s subordinate’s Radiance Lamp sounded an alarm. Seeing this, Vania was startled, wondering if Dorothy hadn’t stopped Davik’s living puppet control. But then she noticed that the spiritual color indicated by the Radiance Lamp was golden yellow, which was the color of “Lamp.” This meant that something extraordinary related to “Lamp” was affecting Davik. Clearly, Dorothy’s living puppet control was not of the “Lamp” spirit.
Vania was puzzled, while Smith’s eyes showed no confusion. His gaze quickly locked onto the source of the extraordinary effect on Davik—the handcuffs he wore.
“Unlock those handcuffs.”
The werewolf commanded. Then, one of his other subordinates took out the key found on the corpse of the hunter and unlocked Davik’s handcuffs, handing them to Smith. After examining the handcuffs, Smith snorted coldly.
“Hmph… Landmarks, these black dogs like to use these, fearing that prisoners might escape.”
As he spoke, the werewolf twisted the handcuffs in his hand and threw them aside. Once the handcuffs were removed from Davik, the Radiance Lamp indeed stopped alarming.
Clearly, these handcuffs were specially made by the An Yin Bureau, featuring landmark sigils to prevent prisoners from escaping. They could track the prisoner using the sigils after an escape.
After removing the tracking extraordinary effect, Smith looked at Vania, who appeared flustered, and said.
“Your devotion saved you this time, nun, but if you want to keep living, be honest with me.”
“Take both of them! Let’s go!”
After confirming that Vania and Davik had no extraordinary traces, Smith confidently gave the order. Two beastmen stepped forward. Amidst the chaos, one of the beastmen carried Vania, and another placed Davik on his shoulder.
‘This is Miss Dorothy’s plan? Solving the immediate danger, but following these guys… isn’t it even more dangerous?’
Vania thought anxiously as she was carried by the beastman. The werewolf then led the way on all fours into the forest beside the road, his subordinates and controlled beastmen following closely. A group of beasts rushed into the forest and disappeared.
After the beasts left, only a scene of tragedy remained on the road. On the twilight path, overturned carriages and several bloody, gruesome corpses lay. The masterminds behind this tragedy had long since vanished.
Shortly after the beasts left, a loud eagle cry echoed in the sky. Then, a large eagle descended from the sky and landed on the overturned carriage.
The eagle with black feathers scanned its surroundings and focused on the twisted handcuffs nearby. It lifted its claw and began to scratch letters onto the carriage, soon forming a distorted word of Prit.
“Landmark”
Then, the eagle spread its wings and flew to the handcuffs, picking them up with its talons and soaring into the sky, heading toward the direction where the beasts had disappeared.
After the eagle vanished, time continued to pass. The sunset in the distance gradually sank, dusk faded, and night fell. Silence enveloped the tragic scene for an unknown duration until it was broken.
Suddenly, a gust of wind howled in the distance, and a dark shadow rapidly flew from afar, landing at the scene. Upon closer inspection, it was Edmond, dressed in a trench coat.
Surveying the surroundings, Edmond’s face darkened upon seeing the scene of the tragedy. His fists clenched, his teeth gritted, and an unspoken anger burned within him. Finally, he spat out a few words through clenched teeth.
“d*mn animals…”
After Davik failed to return, the hospital sent a telegram to the Anonymity Headquarters. Upon receiving the hospital’s telegram, Edmond immediately realized that something was wrong with the person returning and flew back along the route to search. But it was too late.
Looking at the scene of devastation and the missing prisoner, Edmond’s fists creaked. Then, in frustration, he punched the overturned carriage beside him, causing a loud noise as the metal carriage was dented.
At this moment, Edmond suddenly noticed the word carved crookedly on the wooden structure of the carriage. His anger subsided, replaced by seriousness.
