Chapter 39: Sigil
‘Fck… You’re asking for 100 pounds right off the bat? Why don’t you just go rob someone?!’
In the basement of St. Amanda School, Dorothy muttered to herself, listening to Audric’s price quote. She didn’t have nearly that much money.
‘Anything related to secrets is ridiculously expensive. This 100 pounds could almost buy an apartment for Gregor outright. Where am I supposed to get so much money?’
Dorothy covered her forehead, thinking. Looking at Audric, who was smiling benevolently, she felt he had a sly merchant’s grin.
“Mr. Audric, could you make your price a bit cheaper? I don’t have that much money right now…” Dorothy said to Audric, trying to use her cute appearance to look pitiable. But Audric wasn’t buying it.
“Heh heh, I’ve already told Miss Meyshos that I’m very principled. The price is also part of my principles. Even if the sky falls, I won’t change it. If you don’t have enough money, you can go back and gather it. Come whenever you have it. I can wait for ten or eight years,” Audric replied with a chuckle. Hearing this, Dorothy’s face fell, her lips pouted, and she stopped pretending.
Dorothy was in a bind. She only had about 20 pounds in cash. As for mysterious items, she had nothing else. The zombie ring was her main equipment and couldn’t be sold. She had only one finger left with the ‘Cup’ spirit, which she needed to power the ring. So, what else could she sell?
While pondering, she glanced at several corpses covered in white sheets beside her. These were the lackeys of the Holy Communion she had defeated earlier.
Looking at these bodies, Dorothy suddenly had an idea.
“Mr. Audric, since these Holy Communion lackeys are dead, should their belongings belong to me?”
Turning to Audric, she asked. He casually answered,
“According to the rules of hunting, whoever kills them gets their belongings.”
Hearing this, Dorothy felt relieved. It seemed Audric was indeed principled. In this situation, even if Audric claimed everything, she wouldn’t have any recourse.
“So that means, except for the last one you killed, all their belongings are mine?”
Dorothy continued, and Audric nodded silently.
Seeing Audric’s attitude, Dorothy felt happy and decisively lifted the white sheets to search the bodies.
These lackeys didn’t seem to be Extraordinary Beings, but they had displayed incredible non-human abilities at the end. Ordinary people couldn’t do that without some external help.
That means, these lackeys might have had Extraordinary Items from the Holy Communion!
Dorothy lifted the white sheets off each body, and when she uncovered one, she froze slightly.
Under the white sheet lay a skeleton-like corpse with wide-open eyes and mouth, nearly dried up. From his clothes, she recognized him as one of the coachmen who had almost forced her to use the Dragon Roar.
‘Dried corpse? How did this turn into a dried corpse? I thought I killed him with the zombie ring. Getting shot shouldn’t turn someone into a dried corpse!’
Thinking about this, Dorothy frowned. Then she began uncovering the other bodies and found another coachman had also turned into a dried corpse.
Something fishy…
Seeing this, Dorothy carefully searched the bodies and found a pile of spoils. She laid out the spoils on the ground and started counting.
Four six-shot revolvers, 124 rounds of ammunition, two watches, eight cigarettes, 4 pounds and 57 pence in cash, and finally… seven palm-sized pieces of paper with intricate red patterns and abstract cup drawings in the middle.
Dorothy found one piece on one of the coachmen and two more on the other three bodies. This seemed to be their standard equipment.
This must be it…
Looking at the paper in her hand, Dorothy thought. Only this thing looked like a secret society item.
“Mr. Audric, do you know what this is?”
Holding a piece of paper, Dorothy asked Audric, who was drinking tea. He glanced at it and replied,
“I know… but the appraisal fee is 10 pounds.”
‘Fck… What a true swindler…’
Listening to Audric, Dorothy complained internally. After some hesitation, she opened her bag and took out 6 pounds in cash, adding the 4 pounds she had gotten from searching the bodies, making a total of 10 pounds. Now, she only had 14 pounds left.
Audric smiled and calmly accepted the money from Dorothy, then glanced at the paper again and said,
“This is a sigil, originating from the Placenta Sect’s bl**d-Eating Sigil. Now, almost every society that has a ‘Cup’ makes these. These sigils are one-time use. After using them, they enhance the user’s physical abilities by consuming the ‘Cup’ in their body. For ordinary people, using it once would deplete all their ‘Cup,’ leading to that state. So… if you don’t have enough ‘Cup,’ it’s best not to use it.”
As he spoke, Audric pointed to the two dried corpses on the ground. Hearing this, Dorothy was stunned.
‘Consuming the ‘Cup’ within the body to enhance physical abilities? That’s the purpose of this thing. But if there isn’t any extra ‘Cup’ accumulated, it would consume everyone’s innate ‘Cup’ used to maintain life. This would be life-consuming… No wonder those two became dried corpses… This is the consequence of losing the final ‘Cup.’
Thinking this, Dorothy realized the Holy Communion must have invested heavily in this operation. These were clearly sacrificial soldiers…
“So Mr. Audric, can you give me a price for this sigil?” Dorothy continued asking. After some thought, Audric responded directly,
“The bl**d-Eating Sigil isn’t high-tech, but it still requires some cost to make. How about 30 pounds per sigil? What do you think?”
Hearing this, Dorothy handed him four sigils and said,
“Deal. Now tell me the ritual. Oh, and remember to give me back 20 pounds.”
“Heh heh… No problem, just wait a moment.”
As he spoke, Audric slowly walked toward a door in the basement. A short while later, he returned with an envelope and a few banknotes.
“Here you go, Miss Meyshos. Everything you want to know is in here. But I should warn you, although it’s minor, there is poison recognition involved. You’d better prepare yourself before reading.”
Seeing the letter Audric handed over, Dorothy’s eyes lit up. Finally, her promotion was within reach. Now, she just wanted to go home and open the letter.
