Chapter 334 – Transposition
Among the intelligence Dorothy had obtained, the reason why the Underworld Coffin Cult was called so was mainly due to their extensive use of coffins in various Extraordinary Items, with the most significant being the soul-confining Ghost Confinement Coffin. Seeing this coffin, Dorothy immediately suspected that the society in question was likely the Underworld Coffin Cult.
“d*mn, I was just studying them, and now I encounter them in the New World…”
While Dorothy was thinking this, Kapak continued his actions, preparing to forcibly open the coffin immediately. However, an unexpected situation occurred as he was trying to open it.
Just as Kapak pulled the coffin open slightly, several inscriptions on the coffin lid lit up. Then, a pale female ghost directly drilled out from the coffin lid. With her neck pierced by a kn*fe, she glanced coldly at Kapak and Tom nearby before opening her mouth as if to let out a piercing scream. Her entire spirit body floated upwards.
Seeing this scene, Kapak froze in place. Fortunately, Dorothy acted quickly, immediately manipulating Tom’s body to consume a Spirituality Storage Item, then slapped the sealing Sigil on the ghost’s head as it emerged from the coffin lid. The Sigil hit her forehead, preventing her from flying away and stopping her scream mid-air. The ghost was thus pushed back into the coffin lid and sealed again, while the Sigil on Tom burned to ashes.
“Quick, hide! Hurry!”
After pressing the ghost back, Dorothy told Tom to tell Kapak. After a slight pause, Kapak listened to Dorothy and hid behind some cargo. Meanwhile, Dorothy instructed Tom to close the box containing the coffin, then waited silently in place. After waiting for a while without any further disturbances, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Huh… Come out, it seems we haven’t been discovered.”
Tom said to Kapak, who cautiously looked at the box after coming out of hiding. Then he turned to Tom and asked:
“Mr. Detective, was that ghost earlier…”
“Probably some kind of early warning mechanism. That ghost was sealed inside the coffin lid. If the coffin is forcibly opened, it will be triggered to come out, screaming to attract anyone with spiritual senses who can hear it. These guys went through quite a bit of trouble to prevent theft.”
Dorothy instructed Tom to respond to Kapak. Had it not been for her quick reaction and timely intervention, this female ghost would have flown out and screamed, alerting other members of the society around the port.
There were certainly other people hidden around besides Tom, but only Tom, as a security captain, could move freely. The others, who were not official port workers, would find it difficult to move around the port at night. This was the port of the Prith Colonial Government. Without the cooperation of the official Extraordinary Organization here, these members of the society couldn’t act openly, but they definitely had secret surveillance. There must be emergency response forces stationed near the warehouses.
Clearly, the Society of Silence went to great lengths to ensure nothing happened to the items awaiting shipment in the warehouse. Not only did they assign Extraordinary Beings as security captains for the warehouses, but they also placed ghosts as alarm mechanisms attached to the coffin lids. It seemed that each of the forty-odd boxes containing sealed Essences had such a ghost alarm. Now it appeared that the other Sigils on Tom’s body, which he couldn’t yet understand, were meant to notify other members of the society.
Since these goods were transported via regular sea routes, the society members couldn’t be present around the goods all the time. But that didn’t mean they lacked safety measures. If Dorothy had reacted more slowly, the ghost might have screamed and alerted its controller, who wouldn’t be far away.
“Confining spirits to serve as warnings? Do these guys really have such means?” Kapak frowned as he looked at the large number of boxes and spoke.
“Are there such warning mechanisms in all these boxes? Mr. Detective, does that mean we can’t freely release the Essences and Lord Wood Hoof? If that’s the case, I’ll return to my tribe and have Teacher Uta contact shamans from other tribes to deal with those invaders!”
“No… We don’t have the time for you to go back. In a few hours, these goods will be loaded onto ships and sent to our continent.”
“Loaded onto ships? This…”
Kapak spoke with concern, scratching his head in frustration. Tom also looked seriously at the stacks of boxes. If they rashly opened the coffins now, they wouldn’t be able to handle the warning ghosts. Tom had only one sealing Sigil left, which he had already used, and they lacked the means to deal with these warning ghosts.
Kapak was merely an Apprentice Medium, capable of communicating with ordinary wandering spirits, but he had no way to deal with the ghosts controlled by the Black Earth or White Chalk Tier “Silence” Extraordinary Beings. As for Dorothy, with only a living puppet here, she was even less capable.
Inability to handle the warning ghosts meant they couldn’t open the coffins to release the Essences. And in a few hours, these goods would be loaded onto ships bound for Dunkmore, leaving no opportunity. The security measures on board would be even stricter.
‘Trouble… Releasing these Essences now would surely attract the Underworld Coffin Cult, but not releasing them means they’ll be loaded onto ships soon. Although Kapak successfully rescued them, it’s somewhat regrettable to just hand these Essences over to the cult…’
Dorothy thought to herself. She currently had only one living puppet in the New World, so she definitely didn’t want to confront the Underworld Coffin Cult directly. Due to time constraints, she also didn’t have time to seek reinforcements.
‘Sigh… This is quite tricky. We can’t directly open the coffins to release the spirits, nor can we get help, and we only have a few hours… How can we prevent so many Essences from falling into the hands of the Underworld Coffin Cult? We can’t just blatantly move all forty-odd boxes… Stealing from the warehouse so openly would surely be noticed… Hmm, moving the boxes?’
Suddenly, sitting by the fire, Dorothy had an idea. She began controlling Tom to carefully inspect the other cargo piles in the warehouse.
The port warehouse was very large, with many different types of cargo neatly stacked. Through her observation, Dorothy found that these goods were shipped from New Jakport to various countries on the Main Continent, mostly loaded onto ships in the early morning.
By checking the labels on the goods, Dorothy realized that they were categorized based on the ships they were loaded onto, and each ship had a different destination, heading to different countries and ports.
Realizing this, Dorothy had a plan. She controlled Tom to search meticulously within the warehouse, examining the labels on each pile of cargo. Kapak watched this scene with confusion.
Finally, Dorothy found a cargo pile not far from the Essences. After checking the label information, she felt a glimmer of hope.
“Item—Tobacco, Quantity—45 boxes, Origin—New Jakport, Destination—Tivyan, Loading Time—December 5th, 4 AM, Ship—Endeavor, Number…”
Looking at the label on this batch of goods, Dorothy examined the stack of cargo. The rectangular wooden boxes resembled the ones used by the Underworld Coffin Cult, with similar quantities and heights.
“This is it…”
Looking at the cargo pile, Dorothy smiled by the fire and manipulated Tom to walk briskly to Kapak, who was still troubled, patting his shoulder and saying:
“Hey, kid, we’ve got work to do.”
“Work?”
Listening to Dorothy, Kapak looked at Tom with confusion. Tom then pointed to the stack of tobacco going to Tivyan with his thumb and said:
“Now, we need to move these boxes. Swap this pile with that one over there, and remember to be quiet and avoid making noise.”
