Chapter 351: Spider Speech
In a luxurious study in some part of Tivyán, Berlit, a young-looking senior official from the Eight Pinnacle Nest, leaned against the railing. Even wearing only a thin vest and shirt, he showed no signs of feeling cold. His hands were slightly spread out in front of him, with a large spider in his palm.
The spider’s back was adorned with intricate patterns that twisted together to form a human face. Berlit stared intently at the face and spoke.
“What? You mean someone from the An Yin Bureau’s investigation team was transferred today?”
“Yes, Lord Berlit. According to Mr. Adeline’s intelligence, they noticed a member missing during their morning meeting. Afterward, Mr. Adeline asked the knight leading the consular affairs. She mentioned that the person was transferred to another department.”
The human face pattern on the spider in Berlit’s hand began to distort and twist, emitting Donald’s voice. Upon hearing the spider speak, Berlit immediately responded.
“What’s the name of the person who was transferred? From where did they transfer this person?”
“Lord, according to Mr. Adeline, the person transferred is named Wei Han Valdel. He came from Kset in South Lem County. He is a Black Dog of the bl**d Darkness Path and belongs to the Black Tier.”
Through the human-faced spider, Donald answered Berlit’s questions one by one. After hearing Donald’s response, Berlit’s expression darkened momentarily.
“Berlit Lord, does this Wei Han have any issues?”
Hearing Berlit’s silence, Donald continued asking through the spider.
“No, there’s nothing wrong. Next time you see Adeline, tell him his intelligence is good. However, for a while, be sure to stay hidden and avoid making rash moves for information. First ensure your own safety, then think about stealing information. Don’t leave any traces.”
Berlit solemnly addressed the spider. Donald received Berlit’s words through the spider, though he felt slightly puzzled but still responded affirmatively.
“Yes… If Mr. Adeline comes here next time, I will inform him.” Donald replied. Then, as if he had just thought of something, Berlit spoke again.
“By the way, did Adeline mention anything about the current situation of the so-called detective? Didn’t the Black Dogs send him a letter?”
Berlit asked Donald, knowing very well that the culprit responsible for Claudius’ d*ath at the Crown University ruins was the mysterious society represented by “the detective.” In the past few months, they had conducted countless investigations against the powerful society that had caused them significant losses and depleted their divination resources, but they had never found any leads. Now, they were hoping to catch the other side off guard with the help of the An Yin Bureau.
“According to Mr. Adeline, the detective has already replied to the Black Dogs. However, the letter bears the extraordinary mark of ‘Enlightenment.’ The Black Dogs are being cautious due to concerns about traps, so they haven’t opened the letter yet. Their contact might be delayed.”
Donald replied to Adeline, who frowned upon hearing this. The communication between the An Yin Bureau and the detective had stalled, which meant that their plan to use the An Yin Bureau to find the detective was temporarily suspended. This was not good news for them.
“I understand. Tell Adeline to notify us immediately if there’s any news from the detective, of course, under the condition of ensuring safety and not exposing ourselves. If he senses anything unusual, he should evacuate immediately.”
Berlit continued addressing the spider in front of him, and Donald quickly confirmed his response.
“I understand. Also, Lord Berlit, when will you send the human-faced spider to Mr. Adeline? If you could directly contact him, it would be much easier.”
“The situation has changed. For now, let’s put the matter of sending the human-faced spider to Adeline aside. The complexity of his situation exceeds my expectations. The Black Dogs might know something. Carrying or hiding cult artifacts could pose risks.
“So for safety reasons, let’s hold off on direct contact with the human-faced spider for now. Continue serving as a contact point for now. When we meet Adeline again, remember to tell him to be more cautious recently and reduce the frequency of our communications.”
Berlit responded seriously to Donald. Hearing Berlit’s tone, Donald seemed to realize that something was amiss and simply replied:
“Yes, I understand.”
After responding, the patterns on the human-faced spider in Berlit’s hand stopped moving. Seeing this, Berlit turned and walked towards the room from the balcony, approaching the desk. He placed his hand on the desk, and the spider in his palm crawled onto the desktop and into an open small box on the table. Next to this box were other intricately decorated boxes.
Then, Berlit closed the box and opened another one beside it. Another human-faced spider crawled out from this box, onto Berlit’s hand. Berlit looked at the patterns on the spider and asked:
“How is the situation with Rek? Has he contacted you?”
Berlit asked the spider in his hand. After a while, the patterns on the spider began to twist, and a respectful male voice emerged.
“Lord Berlit, Mr. Rek hasn’t met me since our last contact four days ago. Until today, it’s the same…”
Hearing the spider’s words, Berlit’s originally somber expression became even more serious. After a pause, he slowly spoke.
“I understand. There may be changes with Rek. Do not use that contact point anymore. Withdraw immediately.”
“Yes, Lord Berlit.”
After the spider finished speaking, it fell silent. Berlit placed his hand on the edge of the desk, and the spider in his palm quickly returned to its box.
Then, Berlit reached out to close the box and slowly sat down at his seat with a stern look. After settling, he shook his sleeve, and another human-faced spider crawled out from within, onto his hand.
Berlit stared at the new spider on his hand for a moment, watching its patterns change. He heard a deep, somewhat aged voice.
“What happened again, Berlit?”
“There have been some changes in the An Yin Bureau. One of the two spies I planted in their investigation team has been removed.”
Berlit said seriously to the spider in his hand. After hearing this, the voice from the spider paused briefly, then answered with a hint of surprise.
“One of the spies in the team was removed? What caused this?”
“We don’t know yet. It might be because he was discovered during his infiltration, or it could be for other reasons. Anyway, he has lost contact with us. According to the report from the other spy, he was transferred. Clearly, Misha noticed something. We underestimated this royal knight; she is far more capable than we imagined.
