Chapter 46

1.

“It’s been two months now, hasn’t it.”

I absentmindedly murmured this as I got dressed in my casual clothes, a gift from Himari during one of our shopping trips.

Though I felt a sense of renewed sentiment, the predominant emotion was the realization that it had only been two months.

Looking at myself in the mirror—this image of me as a white-haired woman—had become so familiar that it no longer shocked me as it once did.

They say humans are creatures of adaptation, don’t they?

I was no exception. Despite experiencing the extreme changes of a mind transfer and a gender shift, I had adapted well and continued living an ordinary life—or as ordinary as one could call it. No, it wasn’t exactly ordinary.

“…I’ve become too famous, I think, even by my own standards.”

By now, I had made friends and allies. I had built up a certain degree of power and influence, which, compared to my initial days after the transfer, could be described as drastically superior in terms of strength and capability.

As both the hero ‘Silk’ and the student ‘Nanashi Hiiro,’ my name had begun to gain recognition. After the Rhino incident, I hadn’t stopped accepting requests and gradually earned a respectable reputation in the field as a highly skilled and resourceful problem-solver.

…Of course, the downside is that more people are now interested in Nanashi Hiiro, which continues to create its own set of complications.

‘This is hopeless. Somehow, things will just work out.’

I’ve sort of given up on resisting this.

It’s hard to fight when people seem to like you no matter what.

Well, whichever path this takes me down, it means accumulating recognition and influence, thereby expanding what I can achieve. Viewed from that perspective, being both a celebrity and a problem-solver is not a bad thing at all.

‘…Honestly, I don’t really mind it.’

Even if it seems like self-justification, it doesn’t bother me.

It’s all adding to my power, after all.

After all, wasn’t my goal from the start clearly defined?

The dream of becoming a hero and, in doing so, reshaping the narrative of this world into the form I desire.

‘So, I need power.’

That’s why I’ve been building it up until now, and I’ll continue to accumulate it.

To achieve the grand goal I pursue, I must possess far greater power than I currently do.

So—.

‘I guess it’s time to prepare now.’

It’s time to evaluate my current assets, to put them to use.

The cooperation with C&C, the alliance with Veritas and the Special Phenomenon Department, and the Engineering Department.

Even further, the connections I’ve built with certain clubs in Gehenna, the leadership of club presidents like Hina, the relationship with Wakamo of the Seven Sins, and all the other cards I’ve collected under both my identities.

These have been the foundation for my first stage.

I’ve gathered powers exceeding my initial goal.

Now it’s time to put this power into action.

The main storyline.

The upcoming significant events in this world.

The beginning of the great flow often referred to as destiny.

For me to intervene in these events, to twist and reshape them into the conclusion I desire, now is the time to prepare.

Preparations only I can undertake.

“Well, I’ll head out.”

Today’s outing was an appointment to lay the groundwork.

2.

[Hello, teacher,

My name is Nanashi Hiiro, and I’m a freshman from the Special Phenomenon Department at Millennium Science School.

I’m contacting you because there’s a favor I would like to ask of you.

To get straight to the point,

I would like to ask for your assistance with our club’s activities, given your expertise and the active contributions you’ve been making across the realms of Kiburatos.

Our Special Phenomenon Department is a club dedicated to investigating, tracking, and researching phenomena scientifically difficult to verify, known collectively as ‘paranormal phenomena.’ Currently, our activities are mainly within the vicinity of Millennium and D.U., but we plan to expand our reach.

Recently, the frequency of paranormal phenomena in Kiburatos has increased, and many cases have been confirmed through observation. However, since most of these phenomena occur in other autonomous regions beyond our jurisdiction, it limits the effectiveness of our club activities.

Given this, I am turning to you, teacher of SCALE.

Would you be available to assist us in our future activities?

I’d be happy to elaborate in person. Let me know what days you’re available for a visit, and I truly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Nanashi Hiiro.]

This was the email I sent to SCALE a few days ago.

The content was simple: a request for support for club activities.

Considering the preparations needed for my future missions and the upcoming main storyline, maintaining a good relationship with ‘Teacher’ became inevitable. I judged that it would be beneficial to establish contact now.

When I consulted Himari on this, she agreed, even entrusting me with full authority for this matter.

And so, this meeting with the teacher marked why I was venturing out to D.U. today.

About thirty kilometers from the Student Council building lay a structure with a bright white exterior, leaving a refreshing impression.

This was a building I’d visited frequently during my hero activities—a structure that ascended majestically into the sky.

[SCALE Administrative Office]

Once inside, the first thing I noticed was the front desk.

Beyond this were facilities catering to numerous students.

From group activities, classroom lessons, gym training, and shooting practice to audio-visual rooms, the place was more akin to a school than a mere club.

As it was about a month since the teacher had been appointed, students from Millennium, Gehenna, and Trinity frequently used the facilities of the building, mingling freely with no restrictions.

“Okay… The office, where is the office…?”

I had a specific purpose, so I made my way past them, heading toward the nearby elevator to find the office location.

However…

“Argh! What is this? Why are there so many floors? Can’t read it properly.”

Why is the building so needlessly wide and tall?

I started climbing from the bottom, slowly reading each floor’s label, but I couldn’t find the office. Where on earth is it?

While I was struggling to find it,

“Hey, is something wrong?”

A voice called out from behind me.

Startled, I slowly turned my head to find—

“Huh?”

“…Hiiro?”

“Huh? You know me?”

To my surprise, Hayase Yuuka, the accountant from the Millennium Seminar, was looking at me with a similarly surprised expression.

“Wait, how does Yuuka know me?”

I voiced my curiosity aloud, to which Yuuka chuckled and shrugged.

As if it were the most obvious fact.

“Lately, there’s hardly anyone at Millennium who doesn’t know you.”

“…Really?”

“Apparently, you even have a fan club. You’re quite popular, even making appearances around the Seminar sometimes. I can kind of understand it, though. There aren’t many first-years who are as skilled and hardworking as you.”

“R-really? Thank you…”

Not really. I didn’t realize I was so well-known despite working hard.

Although I thought I’d been operating nonstop as a hero, juggling requests day and night, if even the Seminar’s accountant knew of me, then I must have been working extra hard. A sense of pride washed over me, causing a slight grin to spread on my face, which made Yuuka smirk in return.

“Though, what’s this about a fan club?”

The one thing I couldn’t understand among all that Yuuka had said.

Fan club? How did I not know about that?

Why did you all know and not me? Please, share this information.

“Anyway, is there something wrong? You seem troubled.”

“Ah, I’m trying to find the SCALE office but can’t figure out the location.”

“Hmm? In that case, I’ll guide you. I was heading there anyway… Well, ‘you know who’ has once again made some unnecessary wasteful purchases today. Ha ha ha.”

“Ah, I see…”

Yuuka, quietly muttering something while clutching a receipt she took from her bag.

If only this were just like in the game. Smiling bitterly, I followed her into the elevator.

Brrrummm-

After a few dozen seconds, the elevator arrived at the intended floor where the office was located. Yuuka and I stepped out and approached the office, but as we neared the office door marked with its sign,

“Hiiro, could you step aside for a moment?”

“Huh?”

In response to Yuuka’s request, I instinctively stepped back, and with a nod of gratitude, she headed to the door—then—

“TEACHER!!!”

The sound of Yuuka shouting loudly as she stormed inside, driven by fury rather than a casual entry.

“Ah! Yuuka, I’m sorry! I don’t know what’s going on, but please forgive me!”

“Apologizing isn’t going to solve everything! Didn’t we clearly discuss the need for reasonable and planned expenditures?!”

“Bu, but…”

“Ugh, this won’t do. Teacher, we’re starting a session of repentance right—Hey! Where do you think you’re running off to?!”

Voices could be heard from within—a male voice assumedly belonging to the teacher, responding to Yuuka’s complaints.

Seeing a familiar scene akin to the game, I couldn’t help but smile slightly as I stepped inside. There, I saw the teacher retreating into the restroom.

Following him in frustration, Yuuka suddenly stopped upon noticing me, showing a familiar expression.

“Phew, sorry to have shown you this unpleasantness.”

“No, both of you seem to have a good relationship.”

“N-no, it’s not like that! I just wanted to assist the teacher…!”

Ah, I see. I nodded.

If that’s what you say, then that must be it. Certainly.

Though I didn’t fully believe her, since she said so, I decided to let it slide.

After a few dozen seconds, the teacher cautiously emerged from the restroom, glancing nervously at Yuuka.

Spotting me at Yuuka’s side, his expression brightened immediately, exclaiming ‘Saved!’

Yuuka sighed deeply upon seeing this.

“…”

Hmm. As in the game, this teacher who began by showing such a carefree side was hard to believe would later turn serious and lead everyone.

Although, people all have different sides, don’t they?

Everyone wears different masks as they live their lives. It’s not easy to distinguish between reality and fiction.

Even if not entirely convincing from just first impressions, it was evident that this teacher was handsome.

He was undeniably a good-looking man, a quality supported by the narrative’s realism.

Admittedly, he wasn’t someone who would leave an immediate impression of extraordinary charm, but as a male, I could only appreciate his good looks in passing.

Moreover, he projected a feeling of accessibility.

As in the game, he treated students kindly and was widely regarded as a model of a genuinely “good teacher.”

This must be why SCALE gained popularity and renown.

In this regard, the teacher at SCALE could be trusted.

While observing him for a brief moment, the teacher slowly approached me, extending his hand.

“You’re the one who contacted me earlier, Nanashi Hiiro, right? Nice to meet you. I’m the teacher of SCALE—just call me Teacher.”

“My name is Nanashi Hiiro.”

Our initial fleeting glance from the prologue marked our first encounter.

Given the events to come, building a rapport with the teacher was essential; getting closer to him became my immediate goal.

With a small smile, I shook his outstretched hand.

“I look forward to working with you, Teacher.”

The protagonist of this world.

I had successfully established contact.

Here begins the real start of our story.
