Chapter 49

1.

Hero suits. Or hero costumes.

A costume is a kind of identity worn by superheroes during their activities, also acting as a symbol representing the hero. Traditionally, hero costumes were mostly made of spandex, simply put, the material of tight-fitting leggings or tights. However, as time progressed into the modern era, costumes diversified in various materials and forms.

Fundamentally starting with the spandex suits worn by Superman and Batman in the 1900s, up to the numerous material suits worn by Iron Man and other heroes.

Now, costumes do not merely serve as attire but function as a type of weapon or equipment. Therefore, a hero’s suit – costume – can be said to be as important as their abilities.

For these reasons, I poured my heart into the creation of the hero costume. While the reason for not wanting to wear tight-fitting leggings might have played a part, more importantly, since it’s something I’ll be wearing for a long time, I wanted to make it more practical and functional.

After much deliberation, the costume created now serves as the emblem of Silk.

I tried it on for the first time right in front of the Defender members.

“How does it look?”

The suit I wore fitted closely to the body, predominantly featuring a stark white hue with deep blue stripes engraved on it. Simplistically comparing, it bears resemblance to the outfit worn by Marvel’s Black Widow.

Designed entirely for mobility, the full-body suit is slim-fitted, incorporating Millennium’s cutting-edge technology to create a simplified powered suit, also serving as a type of power armor.

Although everything was quite satisfactory, one regrettable aspect remained…

‘…Even so, it does somewhat expose my figure.’

Even though it’s not as revealing as tight leggings, it’s still a costume that emphasizes curves. However, as this level was tolerable, I didn’t feel too uncomfortable. Initially, making the attire thicker or flappy would hinder its function as a proper suit.

Adequately thin and snug enough?

The figure can be covered with a regular coat anyway.

This was my evaluation after wearing the suit created by Hibiki.

Thinking this way, as I debuted the suit in front of everyone for the first time, a gleam of appreciation flickered in their eyes.

“…It suits you, Hiiro.”

“Wow, it’s so pretty!”

“Yeah, Hiiro looks amazing!”

“Hehe.”

They all gave me good reviews.

Their reaction seemed akin to praising a child’s playful performance, but it didn’t feel entirely unpleasant, so I smiled happily, spinning around a bit to show off the outfit.

After twirling for a few minutes, one curiosity arose regarding the costume’s functionality.

Given its strenuous mobility akin to combat or movement, durability and flexibility are essential aspects.

Hence, to test the extent this outfit could withstand, I began stretching and moving my body.

Lifting my arms high,

Stretching my legs straight forming acrobatic poses,

and dangling from the ceiling like spider silk, showcasing various skills.

Midway through, I realized that the sounds around me were fading while glancing around to find that everyone’s gazes were unusually fixed.

“…”

“…”

“? Why are you guys staring?”

All I was showing was how flexible a woman’s body can be by stretching my arms and legs, so why was everyone looking at me with such expressions?

Hmm… those looks were filled with unsaid words.

“Did I do something weird?”

“…Nope, it’s nothing.”

“Alright?”

But why do the expressions still linger…

As I tilted my head in confusion, Amy abruptly started talking,

“Hiiro, wasn’t that a bit too… risqué -”

“Quiet, Amy! Hehe… it’s nothing at all, right Hiiro?”

Himari quickly silenced her.

“Uh, that’s right…”

She just said it was risqué, didn’t she?

What wrong action could be in my behavior?

I have no clue at all.

‘Hmm?’

Given Himari’s reaction, it might not have been risqué after all.

Tilting my head while pondering, I resumed the testing.

Although the proper features haven’t been installed yet, it’s a prototype equipped with most of the basic capabilities.

This was the explanation provided by Utaha and Hibiki. The powered suit’s enhancement and bulletproof features, along with ventilation and ‘vision’ linkage features, were already installed.

‘For now, I’m satisfied with this level.’

Since the Engineering Department has too much work at the moment, I plan to use the suit in its current state for now. After all, Spiderman initially started his activities with the pure version of his suit, without any additional features.

Retroactively, pure and simple can be romantic.

“It’s top-notch! It’s exactly what I had in mind!”

“Good? Lucky me.”

“Thank you so much, Hibiki!”

Hibiki, who looked exhausted with dark circles under her eyes, probably worked hard, so I hugged her tightly.

While wearing the hero suit, since we’re both women, I didn’t think it mattered—

“Ugh…?!”

“I’ll buy you something tasty! Of course! Let’s make a date for another day. We’ll stroll around the city then.”

“Mm… alright…”

As she replied with a weary voice, all of a sudden, a sound of longing “Ah…” escaped from Hibiki.

While I wondered if she was gasping for breath and tilted my head in confusion, a “Hem!” caught my attention from the side.

“Himari-sempai?”

“Hem. Hiiro? You shouldn’t forget about my efforts as well?”

“…Eh?”

At first, I wasn’t sure what she meant, but Himari slightly blushed and hesitated for a few seconds before making up her mind.

And then came the act of wiping away tears pretentiously.

“Sniff… Is this how I’m treated? As the flower on the cliff of Millennium, and as a graceful and elegant girl, you have used me and now you cast me aside? You’re heartless, Hiiro.”

“A-Ah. Why are you doing this… sempai…”

Why is she acting like this?

When did I say anything like that?

As I was confused while asking what Himari wanted, she only opened her arms wide with a red face.

As if beckoning me to hug her back.

“…”

“…”

We remained silent while looking at each other. Although Himari turned her head, she obviously realized she made an embarrassing act.

I smirked and approached her.

“Thank you always, sempai. For always looking after me.”

“Hehe. On the contrary, I’m always grateful.”

Mm. It’s somewhat making things awkward.

It’s hard to bear this kind of atmosphere.

Smiling faintly, I buried my face into Himari’s shoulder.

She ticklishly giggled while her voice carried a hint of satisfaction.

“Hem… Not bad, this kind of thing.”

As I held her tighter, she softly chuckled and smiled brightly.

“…Is this alright? I’ve heard that women often hug or hold hands among themselves…”

Somehow, the distance and such that I can’t understand from a man’s perspective might exist. Even though I don’t fully comprehend it…

I don’t know exactly, but this is probably their way of expressing affection, I figured.

“Hem. I’ll be satisfied with this.”

“Is that so…”

I felt an odd tension, so I awkwardly replied and stepped away from her.

Thereby, this concluded the introduction of the hero costume.

2.

Kiburatos is a realm quite similar to, yet different from the Earth I lived in.

Simple common knowledge, the environment, and daily life—all these were things I recognized yet seemed different.

It was enough to remind me that I was truly transported into this world through reincarnation.

Coping with the strangeness.

That must be one of the difficulties a reincarnated soul must endure.

Therefore, I had no choice but to put immense effort into adapting to this world.

The realm’s knowledge, common sense, and history.

While carrying out hero activities, I didn’t stop honing my skills to act as a proper citizen of Kiburatos.

Through these efforts, I could at least appear as a proper resident and student.

“Where are you from, student?”

Right now, I look like a student, enough for someone to regard me as one. I looked at my interlocutor and replied.

“I came from Millennium.”

“Ah, a long way. Why did you come to such a place? There’s only sand around here.”

“For club activities and also to meet a few people I want to see.”

“That’s good. Work hard. If you’re hungry, come anytime. I’ll always treat you to delicious ramen.”

My conversation partner, the master of Shiba Seki Ramen Shop, ‘Master Shiba’, nodded and said.

Just as I remembered, he’s a great man. That’s probably why he’s liked by the countermeasures committee and the detective agency. I briefly nodded in agreement to his kind words.

“Thank you. This ramen is so delicious, I think I will become a regular customer. I’ll come again often.”

“Haha! That’s a nice comment. Thanks to you.”

It was the restaurant from the game that later got blown up by the detective agency, so I ordered the popular menu early to try it out.

The taste was exactly as described—delicious.

Although I haven’t eaten a lot of ramen, I can say it’s one of the best I’ve ever had.

“Thank you, it was good! Thank you for your hard work!”

“Yeah, safe travels.”

Quickly finishing a bowl, I paid Master Shiba and headed outside.

As soon as I stepped out, I was met with sand scattered on the street, with countless shops that had long gone out of business.

“Hm.”

While Gehenna had many incidents happening, making it devoid of stores in its streets, Abidos felt that way simply because there were hardly any people, failing to develop its business district.

Of course, there are still quite a number of people in the central district of the prefecture, but compared to other districts, it is significantly less.

“…This is serious.”

My assessment of Abidos.

The administrative functions are paralyzed, the population is gradually declining, and constant desertification and sandstorms threaten Abidos.

As Himari put it—Abidos is a prefecture that hasn’t overcome its state of anarchy.

It’s not an issue of Sentum Towers but rather the academy governing the prefecture that isn’t functioning.

When the academy’s function stops, the administrative power halts, leading to the prefecture’s not progressing but regressing.

Is there a way to solve this?

Can the teachers of SCALE solve this problem?

It’s probably impossible. But still, the reason why they, especially that teacher, came to Abidos is singular.

There are still students here holding on to hope. Therefore, they helped them.

It’s an extremely optimistic judgment. The situation won’t improve by saving this prefecture, and more likely, it will deteriorate over time.

Yet, they still don’t stop, as if saying that teachers are the ones to help every student.

Some might call it stubborn.

Others may say it’s irrational.

But this is how I think.

Because of such a teacher.

It’s probably why they are loved by everyone.

I smirked softly while muttering to myself.

“Do we really need a rational reason to save people?”

To begin with, what’s the origin of the very word “hero”?

It’s the word celebrating the act of one person saving another, isn’t it?

So if I, called by this name, do the same. That’s because I’m a hero.

Saving Abidos.

That’s all there is to the story.
