Chapter 383: Inquiry
Thinking this way, Dorothy finished eating her bread, slowly sipped a cup of coffee, paid the bill, and left the restaurant. Back in her carriage, she quickly drove towards the northern part of the city.
After several more hours, Dorothy returned to Green Shade Town with her carriage. After having the zombie puppet put away the carriage, the sky had already darkened, and another night was about to begin.
Dorothy hurried back home. Upon reaching her doorstep, she saw a familiar figure—none other than Beverly.
“Beverly?”
“Oh, Miss Meyshos has arrived. Perfect timing, your diligent personal mail carrier is working.”
Seeing Dorothy approach from afar, Beverly smiled and bowed, saying. Dorothy waved dismissively and responded directly:
“Alright, alright. If your exorbitantly expensive mail carrier were truly diligent, I wouldn’t be able to handle it. Anyway, do I have any letters?”
“Of course! And it’s an urgent one.” Beverly said, then handed Dorothy an envelope. After Dorothy took it, Beverly scrutinized her for a moment before continuing:
“Miss Meyshos, you seemed to have stayed out all night last night. Coincidentally, something major involving the Despenser royal family happened in the southern district last night. Could it be that…”
“Stop speculating… Whether or not I did it, I just went to celebrate New Year’s Eve with my family. Stop making wild guesses.”
Hearing Dorothy’s words, Beverly was slightly surprised.
“You still have family you can spend New Year’s Eve with…”
“Of course! Is that so surprising?”
“A bit… Usually, extraordinary beings like you who delve deep into the Secret World often have mental issues. The deeper you go on this extraordinary path, the harder it is to maintain normal human values and emotions. If you hadn’t mentioned wanting to spend time with your family, I would’ve thought you were some kind of mad researcher obsessed with hidden knowledge.”
Beverly said to Dorothy, then waved and turned to say goodbye.
“In any case, I’ve seen many such madmen. You’re quite rare, and I like you even more. May you not be driven crazy by some weird stuff.”
With that, Beverly walked away, hands behind her back. Standing there, Dorothy pondered what Beverly had said. Indeed, it made sense. In this world filled with bizarre spiritual practices and twisted knowledge, maintaining one’s humanity was difficult. Perhaps this explained why evil organizations and cultists were so prevalent.
If Dorothy didn’t have the “Reading Method” and immunity to poisons brought by the system, her mind wouldn’t remain normal after spending long periods in the Secret World.
Having thought this through, Dorothy took the envelope from Beverly and went inside to sit on the sofa to read it. After a cursory glance, she finished reading the letter.
This letter was addressed to Detective Ed, and the sender was none other than Misha, the royal knight leading the anti-spy team at the Anonymity Headquarters.
Misha sending this letter now clearly meant she wanted to inquire about the situation at Bishop Square. They seemed to have confirmed that the attack was carried out by the Eight Pinnacle Nest. Now, Misha wanted to urgently consult Detective Ed on some questions. In her eyes, the organization Detective Ed belonged to had an insider within the Eight Pinnacle Nest, so they might know critical information about this incident.
Moreover, Misha had recently shared information about Duke Barret with Ed, and now Barret was dead. Misha must clarify the situation and confirm whether Ed’s organization was involved. Therefore, Misha invited Ed to meet directly to discuss matters.
After finishing the letter, Dorothy stroked her chin with interest, thinking:
“Hmm… This works out well. I also want to know the official situation. And if you invite me to provide information… I should be able to ask for some compensation, right? Given how much I need spiritual energy, a few secret transmissions shouldn’t be too much to ask.”
With this thought, Dorothy placed the letter aside and took out a feather pen and an envelope from her magic box. She infused them with spiritual energy and began writing a reply.
In the letter, Dorothy agreed to meet Misha at the old place the next morning and proposed some compensation for the intelligence provided.
“Whew… It looks like the new year will also be a busy one.”
After writing the letter, Dorothy sighed, then prepared to go out to find her diligent mail carrier.
…
Time flew swiftly, and soon a night passed.
Winter sunlight shone upon the spires of the Church District. Amidst the steady chimes of the clock, countless citizens crossed the wide square and entered St. Hymn Cathedral to pray for the new year.
Even though it was the second day of the new year, St. Hymn Cathedral remained bustling. The pews were nearly full, and many people stood or knelt, devoutly praying at the altar of the Three Saints. In a quiet corner far from the crowd, two figures stood. They were Ed, wearing a dark windbreaker, and Misha, dressed in male servant attire with obvious dark circles under her eyes.
“It’s nice to see you again, Miss Misha. You don’t look well. Please forgive me for being frank, but as a lady, you should pay more attention to getting enough sleep. That is the key to beauty.”
Lifting his low hat, Ed said politely to Misha. Misha, looking tired, scoffed and replied:
“Heh… Thank you for your concern, Mr. Detective… Though I’m not sure where you got these theories, I certainly don’t need them. Let’s get straight to the point. First, I want to confirm that the case at the southern district square on New Year’s Eve was indeed the work of the Eight Pinnacle Nest, right…?”
“Correct, it was those vampire spiders. I’m glad you didn’t blame us, Miss Misha. After all, I received information about Duke Barret from you last year.”
Listening to Misha, Ed shrugged and said. Misha, with dark circles under her eyes, continued:
“Among the survivors, some had contact or brief skirmishes with the vampires attempting to infiltrate. Based on their testimonies, we confirmed early on that the Eight Pinnacle Nest was responsible for this incident. However, we still lack clarity on many details. You have an insider in the Eight Pinnacle Nest, right? What important intelligence did you obtain from them?
“For example… Who was the assassin who ultimately carried out the attack?”
