Chapter 588: The Noisy Courtyard
The courtyard was getting crowded, and Lin Nuo thought to himself that this must be some grand food festival, it was so lively.
He realized that his belongings were still left in Ruo’er’s spirit pouch and needed to retrieve them.
So, he returned discreetly, but somehow bumped into this many people upon entering.
Among the crowd were some familiar faces.
Ruo’er and the others were naturally present, huddled together in the City Lord’s Mansion. These people were idling about, not cultivating, wandering around all day with no semblance of a practitioner.
Then there was another group of immortals from Zifeng Valley, whom he recognized, such as Dong Xiyan and Zhao Zhou. He also spotted some others who weren’t from Zifeng Valley but were still immortals, with whom he had some minor connections in his past life.
What connections? Naturally, the opposing factions were hostile—didn’t these guys have any baked goods buddies?
The other immortals probably hailed from various celestial mountains and valleys; in any case, there was bound to be trouble among the common folk.
As he noticed everyone’s gaze upon him, the once lively atmosphere suddenly quieted down.
The sudden silence was unsettling.
Lin Nuo hesitated, and everyone else halted as well. What was needed now was some noise to break the awkward quiet, but no one dared to take that step.
Lin Nuo feigned calmness, as if he hadn’t noticed them, striding forward with his head held high, not looking back.
The crowd’s eyes remained fixed on him, their pupils swiveling in tandem with his steps.
Feeling as if he was under scrutiny, he grew somewhat uncomfortable.
Ah, whatever, just keep walking.
But the silence didn’t last long; after a few steps, Ruo’er’s sparkling eyes flickered, and her fluffy ears began to wiggle.
Then, accompanied by a resounding “Young Master!” the brief silence was completely shattered, and Ruo’er lunged towards Lin Nuo.
In a flash, it was as if a fuse had been lit, and Ruoer’s excited reaction startled the other girls, prompting them to surge forward. However, a sheet of ice suddenly erupted, blocking their rush.
“Hey, hey…”
She bumped into the unexpectedly solid ice wall, her forehead aching slightly, and she couldn’t help but rub it with her small hand.
“Why are you stopping me from going to the Young Master…”
“Just because,” snapped Qin Shili coldly. She had never thought that this little pudding posed any threat before; naïve and pure, she seemed easy to read.
But she was wrong; this little pudding posed a significant threat, much greater than Liu Shuqin.
Not scheming was actually easier to decipher, yet it allowed her to cultivate dual techniques with Lin Nuo.
This was something she and the other girls had never anticipated.
“Hmph, you…”
Ruo’er huffed. Earlier she had called Qin Shili “sister” and now she absolutely loathed her.
After all, Qin Shili always had to jump in and cause a mess; she couldn’t even hug Lin Nuo without trouble.
Even in a crowd, Qin Shili had to show her superiority to Ruo’er, after all, she was prideful and cold; she wouldn’t let anyone have the upper hand.
“When speaking to someone, you shouldn’t just move about; don’t you have any manners?”
“Hmph, he’s my Young Master, I simply can’t control myself. Besides, Dong Xiyan doesn’t mind; if anyone should say something, it should be the Young Master, not you!”
Ruo’er was equally defiant; she wasn’t the humble maid anymore. Stepping onto the immortal path and cultivating dual techniques with Lin Nuo had made her much bolder, and she naturally had to assert her territory.
Ruo’er always thought Qin Shili wasn’t worthy of her Young Master; after all, she had ignored him before and now pretended to care. How shameless!
The two silver-haired girls glared at each other, neither finding the other agreeable.
Lin Nuo looked on, wondering how it had gone from quiet to almost a brawl in moments.
Were they planning on fighting in the Liu family mansion? Wouldn’t Liu Feng be flooded with a million grass mud horses racing through his mind?
“Ah, Senior Brother is back! Are you hungry? I saved some treats for you.”
“Lin the Knight, this is your favorite Huaji Canned Meat Floss Cake! I got it specifically for you.”
Luo Xiaoxue rushed ahead of Su Kexin, preparing the meat floss cake and presenting it to Lin Nuo as soon as he returned.
“Eh? Luo Yi, when did you buy this? How unfair!”
“It’s just normal to do something for Lin the Knight.”
Luo Xiaoxue and Su Kexin referred to each other as sisters, but in front of Lin Nuo, they were more like plastic sisters, each trying to showcase their affection for him.
The courtyard erupted into chaos as the few immortals looked on in disbelief.
They observed that these young ladies, who appeared refined and composed, had suddenly lost their temper.
Feeling their presence diminish, their attention shifted entirely to Lin Nuo.
They watched Lin Nuo, still exuberant with the spirit of a hero.
Of course, on the outside, Lin Nuo didn’t exude the aura of an overwhelmingly powerful being, but he was much better than before.
The courtyard buzzed with noise, and Liu Shuqin soon made her way over from the inner chambers.
As Liu Feng, the master of the Liu family, stood before Liu Shuqin, his voice low with concern,
“Shuqin, with so many girls vying for this young brother’s favor, you must be having a tough time.”
“It’s alright; throughout history, outstanding individuals always have many admirers. I can accept this, especially since my Junior Brother is still unmarried. Nothing is set in stone yet.”
“That may be so, but you should seize the opportunity.”
“Daughter understands, thank you for your concern, Father.”
Liu Shuqin chuckled, performed a courtesy, and then entered the courtyard.
She wasn’t in a hurry, allowing the girls to squabble while she refrained from joining in. After all, she was the mistress of the Liu family and couldn’t be too unrefined.
She sat quietly in her room to consolidate her techniques, not rushing to entertain the immortals. When she finally emerged, she first apologized to Dong Xiyan and the others:
“Esteemed Immortal Seniors, it is truly an honor to have you visit Liu Mansion. Please forgive the lack of a proper greeting. I invite all esteemed seniors to come inside and take a seat.”
“Miss Liu, you need not be so polite. We have come to learn about the situation in Huan Tian City, hoping to do our part for its people. Also, I’ve heard that Ruo’er encountered some troubles here; I feel quite guilty about that.”
Dong Xiyan courteously replied, and while speaking, she noticed the unique silver ring on Liu Shuqin’s delicate finger; she made subtle gestures that seemed intentional.
Not knowing the ring’s purpose, she simply found it somewhat peculiar.
Curious, Dong Xiyan asked:
“Miss Liu, I’ve seen you before but haven’t noticed you wearing a ring. What’s the story behind it?”
“Oh, this ring? It was chosen for me by my Junior Brother; it’s a pair, and he has one just like it.”
Liu Shuqin intentionally raised her voice when saying this; even in her usual soft tone, she needed to project a little more.
Even amidst the chaos, the girls were extremely sensitive and immediately redirected their focus to Liu Shuqin upon hearing “pair of rings.”
Lin Nuo looked on, thinking: is this really necessary? Is she showing off?
