Chapter 630

Chapter 447: Verification

North of Conquer Sea, Trua.

In the early morning hours of Trua, the entire city was gradually awakening from its state of silence. Crowds hurried along the sidewalks heading to their workstations, and the number of carriages on the roads was increasing. Newsboys were shouting at every street corner. All these scenes seemed no different from the usual Trua.

On an ordinary carriage on the road, two men were sitting side by side inside the carriage. Judging by their age, they were both middle-aged men in their thirties or forties. One wore glasses and a grayish-black trench coat, while the other was dressed in a common yellow overcoat with long pants. One man gazed out the window at the streets, while the other unfolded a newspaper, reading it intently.

“Is there any news in the paper? Has anything significant happened in this city in the past couple of days?”

The man in the gray trench coat watched the pedestrians on the street as he spoke, while his companion in the yellow overcoat flipped through another page of the newspaper and calmly responded.

“There’s not much major news. If we have to point out something noteworthy, there was an explosion and fire in the western part of the city the day before yesterday. An entire house burned down. The newspaper reports that it might have been caused by a gas leak, which could be related to our matter.”

“Only one house was destroyed… A gas leak explosion? This still doesn’t confirm a connection with the Dark Gold Society…”

The man in the gray trench coat finished observing the outside of the carriage and turned his gaze back to the interior, continuing to speak to his companion.

“To eliminate a Stone Demon along with several Wall-crossers, if using strong material means, the impact would not be limited to destroying just one house. Losing half a street is possible.”

“Mm… You’re right. However, since there isn’t any report of larger-scale destruction, if the Dark Gold Society in this place has indeed been eliminated, the mercenary who did it is likely a powerful Extraordinary Being in terms of spirit or soul. After all, it’s hard to compete with a Stone Demon in the material world.”

The man put down the newspaper and said, while the man in the gray trench coat nodded in agreement.

“It might be like that. If the so-called mercenary really managed to take down the entire Dark Gold Society base, this is the most plausible scenario…”

“From your tone, you seem to distrust the other party? Bosk.”

Listening to the man in the gray trench coat’s response, the man in the yellow overcoat raised an eyebrow and asked, and the other continued to respond.

“Not distrust, but it just seems too unbelievable. Think about it, Mador. Our base in Trua only contacted us five days ago, then the main workshop six days ago informed us that the Trua base had been infiltrated and replaced by the Dark Gold Society. Now they say it has been eliminated by the mercenaries they found, asking us to verify the situation…

“Oh my God, even if the base we contacted in Trua five days ago was a disguise by the Dark Gold Society, and they have been replaced, it proves that they were still around at that time. But for the main workshop to suddenly announce that they were all eliminated the next morning, what kind of mercenary could wipe out an entire Dark Gold Society base overnight in all of South Castilla?”

The man named Bosk said incredulously. After hearing his words, Mador pondered for a moment before slowly speaking.

“You do have a point. The situation does seem suspicious, but no matter what… Since this matter is reported by the main workshop, there must be some credibility. We should trust the main workshop. Perhaps this mercenary was dispatched by someone important within the main workshop.”

“That makes sense, but isn’t it a bit too casual? To maintain neutrality, generally, people from the main workshop don’t easily borrow external forces to handle matters. This time, not only did they hire others, but they made the decision so quickly. It feels off.”

Bosk spoke directly. This was their first task to verify the results of the mercenaries, so they couldn’t help but feel suspicious.

“It does go against precedent, but we’ve confirmed the order from the main workshop multiple times and it’s accurate. In such a situation, we should focus on executing the task… Of course, we should still be cautious.”

Mador said, and after hearing his words, Bosk fell silent instead of responding directly. Then, Mador looked out the window again and observed the street scenery for a moment before saying directly.

“It seems we’ve arrived. Let’s get off the carriage. Be careful.”

After saying this, Mador called the coachman to stop the carriage. He and Bosk got off the carriage from one side and onto the sidewalk. After looking around at the relatively quiet street scene, they retrieved their luggage from the rear of the carriage and fixed their gazes on a seemingly ordinary hotel on the street.

Then, the two entered the old-fashioned hotel and climbed up the stairs. After a short while, they reached a not-so-low floor. Looking around, they checked the room numbers on the doors. After wandering around for a bit, they found the room they were looking for.

“Room 504, this is it.”

Mador looked at the door number and said, then he knocked on the door. Inside, a male voice responded.

“Please wait a moment.”

Footsteps came from behind the door, and soon after, the door opened. Behind Mador and Bosk stood a handsome young man in a shirt and vest. He was smiling at them.

“Ahh… You finally arrived. The two from the Artisan Guild, I have been waiting here for quite some time. My name is Brandon. May I ask how you two would like to be addressed?”

With a warm tone, Brandon smiled and extended his hand to signal a handshake. They exchanged glances, and Mador stretched out his hand to shake Brandon’s.

“Names are unnecessary. Let’s get straight to the point, Mr. Brandon.”

“Get straight to the point? Of course, please come in.”

Brandon released his grip and gestured for them to enter. After stepping into the room, they took a look around and realized it was a simple yet spacious guest room. On the floor lay a stretcher, covered with a white cloth. Underneath the cloth was clearly the outline of a human form.

“The corpses of the black merchants’ leaders are here. You can examine them freely.”

Brandon casually said, then the two walked to the stretcher and lifted the white cloth covering the body. Before them lay the corpse of an elderly man. After examining the body, they exchanged a few casual remarks. Then, Bosk opened a box and took out various mysterious tools to begin some sort of inspection, while Mador walked over to Brandon and started conversing with him.

“Mr. Brandon, were you the one who hunted down the mercenaries of the Dark Gold Society in Trua?”

“In a more accurate sense, it was my master… I am merely here to facilitate the handover.”

Brandon responded easily. Mador continued to ask.

“Your master… In all of South Castilla, the power to obliterate an entire Dark Gold Society base in one night is rare. And we know that you, Mr. Brandon, should have come from somewhere else.”

“Yes, we happened to pass through Trua. My master happened to notice the abnormal situation here and, after notifying his old friend in your Artisan Guild, was entrusted with these cleanup tasks. Isn’t that exactly what you are here to confirm?”

Brandon continued to smile as he spoke. Listening to Brandon’s words, Mador thought to himself that things were indeed as he had suspected. This so-called mercenary should be someone connected to an important figure from the main workshop, sent temporarily to assist. That mercenary should have a deep and trusting relationship with someone important from the main workshop; otherwise, the main workshop wouldn’t have chosen to hire someone so illegally to solve the problem in Trua.
