“Older sister, you don’t have anything special to do, right?”
“Should there be? You should know better how mutants are perceived in society.”
“So, you’re completely unemployed then.”
“That’s true, but honestly, there’s nothing I can do right now, you know.”
“Huh. Anyway, you don’t have anything else to do, right?”
“For now. What about you?”
“I think I’ll go for a private tutoring session later.”
“How have you managed to find another surprising way to earn money?”
“I made an agreement with mom and dad. They said I can live here but I need to earn my own allowance. That’s why I don’t have any allowance.”
“That’s just words. Aren’t you still using mom’s card while talking like that?”
“Besides that, there are things I need to spend personally. Living expenses are significant issues. Even you, older sister, are here now, which doubled our food expenses.”
“…That is true. Then maybe I should also find a job. By the way, I wonder when the reward money will come?”
“Reward money?”
My younger sibling looked at me with curiosity.
“Wasn’t there a reward for capturing a mutant yesterday?”
“Who?”
“An agent from the National Intelligence Service.”
“…Why would a spy catcher have anything to do with me?”
“Oh, you’re really my younger sister. Your thinking process is exactly the same.”
“What nonsense are you saying?”
“Seems like it’s because mutants cause too many problems, so they assign agents to deal with them….”
“But isn’t that too many incidents happening for that?”
“Maybe thanks to those people, it’s less chaotic?”
“Yeah. By the way, how much is the reward?”
“I’m not sure yet, but let’s go eat something once it hits my account.”
“Oh.”
“Think about what you want to eat.”
The kid looked at the breakfast I prepared and shoved it into their mouth.
Not long after, with a rattling sound, they began cleaning the dishes.
“I’ll just do the dishes, so leave it to me. Aren’t you going to a tutoring session?”
“The session starts at 7 in the evening. There’s still plenty of time before that.”
“Then you should do it.”
“I was planning to do it anyway.”
After finishing the dishes, I could feel them staring at me.
“What are you looking at?”
“Do you have eyes on the back of your head?”
“I already told you, I have千里眼(distant-seeing eyes). I can sense every glance directed at me. So, why?”
“Hadn’t you dried your hair properly? Why does it look like this? Come here. I’ll dry your hair for you.”
“What’s gotten into you? You’re so ungrateful.”
“It’s just, managing such a blessed appearance without proper care seems such a waste, why? If you don’t want me to do it, I won’t.”
“Who said I didn’t want you to? I’m just surprised, that’s all. It’s strange for you to do something like this, people say that when someone does something they don’t usually do, it means they’re about to get sick…
“Idiot. You shouldn’t say these things to your younger sibling.”
“What have you been saying while you constantly talk rudely to me?”
“Anyway, come here quickly. Your hair is getting damaged.”
“It’s not going to be damaged. The dragon’s gracious body doesn’t accept any harm.”
“What did you say?”
“It’s true.”
“How do you know that?”
“Apparently, I naturally came to understand it.”
“Naturally?”
“Yeah. Instinct, kind of. When I’m spacing out, I can suddenly think of things I can do, like remembering something I had forgotten.”
“That’s amazing…
The kid muttered and picked up the hairdryer, slowly combing down my hair as it made a humming sound.
Warm air was drying the water off my hair.
“Your hair is really long.”
“Do you want to cut it?”
“No need. Anyway, the dragon’s gracious body can’t get damaged. Plus, long hair looks beautiful.”
“What’s the point of being beautiful?”
“Whenever you play games, you always put so much effort into customizing female characters. How about doing that in real life?”
“Hey, am I a game character?”
“While not exactly the same, at least try thinking and styling that way. It’s a waste, isn’t it? What’s the point of having a face that could rival celebrities but not even being able to hand out your business card? It feels good when you look good in the mirror, and it subconsciously boosts your self-esteem.”
“I’ve never felt that way, I’ve never thought I was handsome. It’s because all the good genes went to you. Hey, don’t subtly try to mess with me like that while talking.”
“Why, are you sensitive about it?”
“Don’t say nonsense. I don’t feel anything. It’s just a little unpleasant.”
“Is it?”
“Would you like it if someone messed with your body?”
“Of course not.”
“That’s what I’m talking about.”
“I get it. Do you have anything in mind?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Thoughts on styling.”
“Hey, I’ve been a woman for not even that long. It’s too soon for that. There are psychological barriers.”
“Well, take your time~ It’s not urgent, but I personally feel it’s a waste. That’s all. Anyway, your hair texture is amazing. It’s classic like silk.”
“But I keep telling you…
“Of course, it’s all thanks to the dragon’s gracious body. By the way, what are you planning to do until the school semester starts?”
“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll do some internet broadcasting?”
“Out of nowhere, why would you do that?”
“You don’t know the national rules yet. When your gender changes, doing internet broadcasting is one of the national rules.”
“National rules of which country, you hardcore gamer. Anyway, if you want, go ahead.”
“Alright. It was just a joke. Sometimes, you just say things without filtering through your brain. Haven’t you realized that after watching me for a few years?”
When I said that, my younger sister sighed.
Why, what, why.
As evening approached, while my younger sibling was preparing to go for the tutoring session,
I was looking at my smartphone.
Then, I opened the group chat.
The chatroom of the group project might as well be considered dead already, so even if I looked, it wouldn’t really be a problem. However, the issue lied in the chatroom that was still active.
Particularly, the chatroom of my university male classmates, my only means of communication.
The four members in that chatroom have been asking about my whereabouts since I disappeared due to the mutation.
[Han Tae-hoon: Where’s this Seo-hyun bastard? Suddenly disappeared from the group project, making the whole group fail.]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: If the group project collapses because of one person missing, it’s better for it to fail.]
[Cho Min-hyeok: It’s so annoying… our group is on the verge of chaos. Seriously, this damn group. When I asked them to submit the paper, they pulled stuff from all over the place to make a mess out of it.]
[Heo Ji-hwan: Makes me want to throw it away every time.]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: Anyway, Seo-hyun screwed up last year’s course registration, and this semester, they only took six majors and ended up as the group leader for all six group projects… Didn’t they try to shoulder all six trunks because of their character and then fled?]
[Han Tae-hoon: That might be it lol. Hey, Seo-hyun, is something wrong with you?]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: They’re not even looking at the chatroom. ]
[Han Tae-hoon: Is something really wrong? Has anyone seen their dorm?]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: Not there.]
[Cho Min-hyeok: Did they just disappear suddenly? That’s strange… This person wouldn’t do that, right?]
The chat continued until fairly recently.
[Heo Ji-hwan: Anyways, isn’t Yun Seo-hyun really dead?]
[Han Tae-hoon: Then why hasn’t obituary news come yet?]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: It’s worrying… No one knows the family’s number, and the department only said medical leave was taken.]
[Cho Min-hyeok: Isn’t it some kind of chronic disease?]
[Han Tae-hoon: Or, did they undergo a mutation? Isn’t that the most reasonable suspicion? The disappearance coincides with when mutants started appearing.]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: And now that I think about it, it’s possible… maybe they underwent some kind of mutation and are in a serious situation? Or maybe they can’t control themselves?]
[Heo Ji-hwan: It could be…]
Still, even considering they’re classmates, it was somewhat touching that they cared. Even after being out of touch for three months, the fact they still remembered me meant… Still, I should probably declare that I’m still alive.
[Yun Seo-hyun: Hi.]
As soon as I reappeared, a bunch of question marks popped up in the chat.
[Han Tae-hoon: Are you alive?]
[Yun Seo-hyun: Yes…; Thank you for worrying.]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: What happened? Did you really undergo a mutation?]
[Yun Seo-hyun: Yes.]
[Heo Ji-hwan: What the hell?]
[Cho Min-hyeok: When did you wake up?]
[Yun Seo-hyun: Uh… four days ago?]
[Han Tae-hoon: That’s quite a late awakening. What did you mutate into?]
[Yun Seo-hyun: I’ll show you when school starts lol. It’s kind of inconvenient for me to go out now… I can go out but it’s uncomfortable.]
[Yoo Han-gyeol: Okay, okay, it’s good that you’re alive.]
[Yun Seo-hyun: Anyway, let’s meet when school starts.]
Time passed incredibly fast.
And astonishingly, nothing happened.
No rampaging mutants. Continuous health checks showed no abnormalities either.
Even more surprisingly, the reward money from capturing the Minotaur was substantial, allowing me to live a completely relaxed life. Though my younger sibling attempted to drag me out a few times, I only went a couple of times.
Because I was someone who was happiest being at home.
Looking back, it was already a month until the start of the semester.
While others would probably start moving around after the semester begins, my circumstances were a bit different.
I had to submit my application for course retakes to the department office first.
I pulled my cap down low.
As the perception of mutants grew increasingly worse, it was best to keep a low profile.
Though it was the actions of a few that were problematic, perceptions usually stemmed from such minorities.
To avoid unnecessary attention, wearing a cap when stepping outside had become routine.
Also, my golden eyes attracted attention, so I wore black contact lenses. It seemed like I had to jump through hoops just to go outside.
After putting the prepared documents in my bag, I headed to the department office. Leaving around the time it opened, at 9 a.m., the streets were nearly deserted.
At this point, just running would be fine.
The one advantageous aspect of mutating was that I no longer needed to use public transportation to travel from my dorm to school.
I could just jog like regular exercise.
That way, I reached school within ten minutes or so.
Plus, the speed and lack of fatigue made running quite enjoyable.
Still, I had to be cautious when people were around.
Because if I accidentally collided with someone, they wouldn’t just lightly recover from their injuries. Although collisions were effectively impossible… possibilities always exist.
I wanted to spread my wings sometimes too, but doing so would attract a lot of attention, so I kept them tucked away.
I couldn’t forget my younger sibling’s shocked expression the first time I extended my wings.
Over the past two months, I awakened to all sorts of abilities and powers as naturally as breathing.
I could fly through the sky, handle lightning and fire, summon rain—basically control the weather and meteorological phenomena.
Anyway, glancing up, I noticed the building of the College of Humanities.
I headed without hesitation towards the department office of Korean Language and Literature.
Just as I was about to enter, I felt a slight tension.
As I knew some of the teaching assistants in the office…
This would be the first time meeting someone who knew me outside of family since my mutation.
Tentatively, I knocked on the department office door.
